  1. I'll be attending Penn State this fall (excitement), and, like you, my interests are in 19th/20th century continental. I'd be happy to answer questions about applications if you want to PM me (I'll try to the best of my ability, anyway). I would also suggest University of Memphis. The school as a whole went through some unfortunate budget cuts this year, but they do have a pretty strong department, in my opinion. I applied to a few of the schools you mentioned, actually (though not the New School). Best of luck on your applications this year!!
  2. I was offered $4,000 more per year. No change in my teaching requirements, though. I also wasn't actually trying to get more funding, so maybe there was even more wiggle room that I didn't try for (I'm not the type to test a department!)
  3. I sort of did it accidentally. When I visited one program, they asked me what other offers I had, and then offered me more funding to beat out the others.. No idea if it's common in the UK though, sorry.
  4. Just around mid-day today, via email. Since it's Saturday, I imagine it's quite possible that no one will see my email until sometime on Monday!
  5. I declined my funded offer from Purdue today. I hope this helps someone!!!! My AOIs are 19th/20th century continental and social/political, broadly put. Best of luck.
  6. I was on the waitlist at Fordham, but declined several weeks ago!
  7. One of my friends was admitted to Marquette today. Sorry I don't have any other info, but it is legit!
  8. When I did my interview with Penn State, they told me outright that it was fine that I know absolutely no German since they had a German class specifically for philosophy students. (I have a decent background in French, but by no means fluent).
  9. If it helps, I'm leaning towards declining my offer w/ funding We have very different AOIs thought :/
  10. Damn, they must be special. I just got an email
  11. Thank you! They said they were planning to make 7 funded offers this year. I'll keep my fingers crossed for you! It was a personalized email, so seems likely that they could take a while to get them all out.
  12. I can claim the Purdue acceptance. Email from Paul Draper about an hour ago!
  13. Removed myself from Fordham's waitlist today. Hope this helps some people out!
  14. I actually had this same question (different reasons for considering deferral, though). Any info would be great! I'm afraid to ask the department about their policy on deferral and make it seem like I'm uninterested/lazy/etc...
  15. Congrats!! Good news is always nice
  16. I feel like this might be a little extreme. I come from an unranked (PGR and US News) and generally poorly regarded school. We have a wonderful philosophy department (in my opinion), but only a few of them publish/attend conferences consistently, so none of my LORs were well-known. Granted, I only have one Ph.D. acceptance, but I'm quite happy with it. I did not apply to any terminal MA programs, which may have been a mistake, but I think that things have turned out well, all things considered.
  17. I ran out of upvotes, or I would give this ten. I was in the exact same boat, except I didn't have any advisors of Alan Schrift's caliber- I went to a very weak undergrad institution.
  18. I got the same number- top 15%. I assumed that it was just a generic email, with my name copied and pasted at the top!
  19. Thanks for the heads up! I'm honestly more interested in Penn State's offer, even I did get off the waitlist at Fordham. Penn State seems like a much better fit for me, in general. I'll likely give myself a few more weeks to think it over, regardless.
  20. I'm currently waitlisted at Fordham/accepted to their MA. I will likely take myself off the list, but I'm still waiting to hear from a few schools before I do so!
  21. The Fordham email (for me- waitlist) was pretty generic. Actually, it's kind of cruel because it says "Congrats on your acceptance to Fordham"! And then you go open the attached PDF and realize that you've been accepted for the MA but waitlisted for PhD. Yeah.. thanks for that one, adcomm.
  22. Hi guys! I'm brand new here, but I'll claim one of the Penn State acceptances and the Fordham waitlist. Congrats to everyone accepted or waitlisted thus far! Still a ways to go...
