  1. Thank you guys/gal for all your inputs to this thread. I really took your perspectives seriously and today I have decided to decline the Religion offer and accept the offer in Sociology.

  3. Honestly, I love both fields. I can easily teach both disciplines with the same passion. And yes, I am planning on teaching and researching after I graduate.
  4. I have started this thread somewhere else, but I believe here I can get a better feedback. I’ve been accepted to University A Religion program and to University B Sociology program (both with the same research focus – immigration and religion). Now, I need to decide on which one to attend, but am really not sure where to go. Let me write down the pros and cons of each program in my opinion. Keep in mind that I am an international student. U-A - Sociology Pros Located in a big city - there is a great immigrant community understudied; Have already offered funding package for four years; Great fit (in my SoP I mentioned three potential supervisors); I have a MA in Sociology Cons New and not yet ranked program; U-B - Religion Pros Incredible POI; More prestigious university; I have a Master of Divinity (Seminary degree) Cons Located in a small city without a significant immigrant community – I will have to travel for field work; Have not yet offered funding – but will soon, I hope; Which university do you think I should go? Just one more piece of information. If I decide to stay in the US after PhD, the Religion program would be better and would probably give me more opportunities. On the other hand, if I decide to return to my country, Sociology would be better and would open more and better doors. I would really appreciate some insights! PS: I may add some other pros and cons later as I think more about both offers.

  6. Got a rejection email today from Boston University. Anybody else?
  7. Yes, I am international (Brazilian). I am pretty excited about USF only by your comments and the comments of one of its current students whom I have been chatting since I've been accepted. Here in Brazil, the prestige of a university won't automatically project you into the job market. As a matter of fact, in order to get a job in a public university (the ones that pay better) you will need to go through a public contest with other candidates. It is a three phase contest - written exam, teaching performance, and lastly curriculum analysis. Each phase is eliminatory and the last one classificatory. Unless I decide to stay in the US (unlikely), I won’t make a decision based on prestige or the like. Thanks JustineE for your very relevant information
  8. Hey JustineE, how many students did they accept for the fall? Were most of them there? What are your other options?
  9. I am also anxiously waiting for some BU news. I have contacted them many times and no answer whatsoever!
  10. This is me! I emailed them and after two days they replied with an attached .pdf of my acceptance letter. I have until March to accept the offer. No funding though.
