  1. Hey, how did you find out your apartment number?
  2. Same here - Rains 2BR. See you in the fall
  3. Stanford (Math phd program).
  4. I got into a top school (in math) with your AW score. I think it is completely insignificant for an engineering applicant, especially international one.
  5. http://www.cgsnet.org/portals/0/pdf/CGS_Resolution.pdf Basically if you accept an offer and wish to change your mind after april 15th you need to obtain a written release from the school before accepting other offers.
  6. Yes my e-mail is active. I was able to use it approx. 24 hours after I accepted the offer in axess, as they say. You should be able to login here: http://webmail.stanford.edu with your SU Net ID and password.
  7. I agree that $60.000 for two years is underestimated. It is the estimated cost of living for about ONE year according to their own website: http://studentaffair...ancing-expenses Are they offering you some form of financial support, reduced tuition, TA or something like that?
  8. There is a version of MS office for Mac but you have to buy it separately. I assume it has the same features as the windows version. There is also an OpenOffice version for the Mac which is free but I've heard that it is not as good as the MS office. If you're going to use the laptop just for writing and web surfing then get a Mac. Macs are way cooler than the pcs.
  9. Take a look at this thread: I've used this: http://www.amazon.co...68942336&sr=8-1 this: http://www.amazon.co...title_popover_0 and some Kaplan's book (you'll find it easily on amazon, just search for Kaplan GRE)\ By the way GRE scores alone cannot guarantee you admission to a science phd program so try to improve other parts of your application as well.
  10. I don't think they will feel offended if you turn down their offer, in fact the sooner you tell them the better. I am sure they have a bunch of people on the wait-list waiting for your spot.
  11. I'll definitely be going to Stanford. My program is mathematics phd.
  12. Yes, I did. I think in sciences interviews are not common practice. It depends on the department of course.
  13. You should ask them about that. Funding is crucial when deciding between programs so I think it is ok to ask. The deadline to response to offer of financial aid, as you probably know is april 15th so you will definitely know in a couple of weeks.
  14. As others have said study for the subject test, do your best on that REU (it's not crucial to publish, the important thing is to get a good letter) and try to take more math classes. I think that the number of the math classes you've taken (around 10) may be on the low side. I may be completely off here, since I don't know what the requirements for a math major in the US usually are. someDay, do you think that IMO medals can help you get into grad school? IMO was 4 years ago
  15. It is possible to skip it. Just click 'Next' after the section starts. You will have empty essay and will get 'NS' (or 0 I am not sure). I don't think it is a good idea to do that. You don't know how adcomms evaluate multiple GRE scores, it is possible that they consider maximum in each section but it is also possible that they look at the average. In any case I don't think they will like the NS.
  16. The pages are not numbered. You have to manually go to page 206 in Acrobat reader/Preview/FoxIt or whatever pdf reader you're using. By the way this is one more proof that they do not look at your AW score
  17. I remember that site, I have almost 500 words mastered there I agree that using flashcards is the best way to learn new words. I used this http://www.amazon.co...7724661&sr=8-1. It is a box with 500 flashcards, each word has a definition, sample use in sentence (very important) and synonyms.
  18. Don't worry about the general GRE. The only important thing in the general GRE for math applicant is scoring near 800 at the quantitative section and you did that. The AW score is completely irrelevant, I got into a top program with that same score - 3.5. I am afraid that the subject test is important. Especially if it is that low, both 38% and 380 sound low to me. It is a clear red flag and you will need something to make up for it. If you don't get in this year and plan to apply again in the future definitely retake the test. Spend some time to prepare and do some practice tests. Unfortunately your job experience will not help your application much. Unless of course it is somehow related to doing math research. I don't want to sound negative, but this is what I've learned about this process. One more thing, each school weighs different parts of the application differently (and high GPA can make up for low GRE, especially if you've taken some advanced math classes) so you have a shot.
  19. You need to relax. I don't think that there is even a single case of admitted student who didn't attend the program due to visa issues. I haven't applied for F1 but when I applied for J1 last summer my impression was that if you have all the required documents you will be ok. So just make sure you have all the forms needed and you will be fine. On the off chance that you get denied I am sure that your school can help you. A friend of mine did an internship in a US company last summer. When he was applying for J1 he forgot to bring the training plan to the embassy (the training plan is the second most important document for J1 after ds-2019 form). He got denied visa, of course, then he contacted the company and the company lawyers contacted the embassy and he had his visa in a week, which is remarkable since you usually must wait at least a month to schedule an appointment here! So don't worry about the visa, you'll be fine. The hard part is over
  20. I was accepted to Duke yesterday. They have this really cool system that allows you to accept/decline their offer online and I already declined it. I also withdrew 6 of my apps yesterday. This is 6*(90 (app fee average) + 20(GRE) + 20(Subject GRE) + 20 (toefl)) = $900 wasted, not that I'm complaining or anything. Since I will be rejected for sure from the other schools (Harvard, Berkeley, Chicago and Yale) now I really hope that nothing goes wrong with Stanford (I mean nothing like this: ) . Do you guys have any idea when they send the official letters? I already received the letter from Caltech and it dated 11/02 which means that it takes approximately one week for a letter from California to reach me.
  21. I think you mean $\pi$ I don't understand why the guy in the movie keeps trying to find a pattern in pi. Doesn't he know that pi is irrational? And why would someone believe that pi contains information about the stock market?
  22. SUNY Stony BrookMolecular And Cellular Biology (MCB), PhD (F10)Rejected via E-mail on 5 Feb 2010I5 Feb 2010I don't see why.....is it possible to be rejected for overqualified? This guy probably received an email couple of days later offering him to skip the phd (because he is totally overqualified) and accept a tenured position in the department.
