  1. I am also applying to Syracuse for a Ph.D., and I did my undergrad at Ole Miss. So if there's something to know about these programs, I guess I missed the memo, too. In all honesty, they are smaller programs, which is probably why they're overlooked. Also, they're not in the top twenty or so, which also deters applicants. I wish you the best of luck in your application process. Try not to fret right now; worrying will get us nowhere (currently)--though I do know that's easier said than done. "This is fine. This is fine." -- my life motto
  2. Panicking. Can't think in complete sentences. WHAT DO I DO WITH A MASTER'S DEGREE IF I DON'T GET ACCEPTED TO ONE OF THE 12 PROGRAMS TO WHICH I AM APPLYING? (I am screaming, inside and out.) Console me. Coddle me. Halp.
  3. Hi all, I, too, am applying for PhD programs in the fall. I complete my MA program next April, so I'm looking into several universities with strong eighteenth-century faculty. I currently only have about eight programs on my list, so I hope to get that to ten by the summer. I look forward another application process with my future looming in the distance like a faint, desolate mirage.
  4. Thank you very much! I keep hearing great things about Rutgers, but my GRE scores are abysmal (although, I do intend to retake the GRE and maybe subject this summer). Have you heard anything about UConn for eighteenth-century lit?
  5. Bumping this thread. Does anyone have any suggestions for Restoration/long-eighteenth century graduate programs? I have a few ideas, but I'm wondering if anybody may have some schools in mind that I haven't considered.
  6. I know I'm late to this post, but I'm a horrible (abysmal, actually) standardized test-taker. While I'm not proud to say this, I scored below the 50th percentile, and I was accepted/currently attend one of those schools on your list that require the GRE. Your letters of recommendation and writing sample will be prioritized over your standardized test scores. Nevertheless, I am going to retake the test before applying for PhD programs. I simply wanted to let you know that people have been accepted with lower scores than yours.
  7. Graduate school preparation: watch every Netflix show available.

      Sounds good to me!

You'll do that during breaks too... lol

  8. At Ole Miss is my undergrad, and eco-criticism is what I'm focusing on in grad school, too! Dr. Raber, Dr. Ellis, and Dr. Fisher-Wirth are professors I definitely recommend. I think if you're especially interested in Southern Lit, Ole Miss could be your best choice. I mean, funding isn't spectacular, but we're in humanities; it's not a field to go into if you expect to roll around in cash.
  9. They actually did get rid of MegaBus throughout MS. But I think if you pay someone you could certainly find a way to Memphis. It's only an hour away, so surely no more than $40 would do the trick.
  10. So I just found out today that I have been accepted from the wait list to Ohio University for the MA program!! I accepted the offer, and I'm officially a Bobcat!
  11. The housing websites typically don't have much. They aren't very updated. I honestly don't know of any place in Oxford that allows for a month to month lease. I haven't heard of any place actually leasing for shorter than 10 months. That's not to say that there isn't, but I haven't heard of anything. If you're lucky, you may find somewhere that allows for a 6 month lease, but that's the shortest I think you'll find in Oxford.
  12. I'm still wait listed at three universities. *dies inside* I'm going to take a break from grad cafe if I'm not accepted. I'll begin applying again in the fall.
  13. I'm still wait listed at three universities. I'm a bit upset that I turned down my acceptance to Temple just because I do want to attend graduate school so badly, but I know it wasn't financially feasible for me to pay for a MA degree. So I'm patiently waiting in hopes of some good news by Friday. I'm expecting to have heard for all three by the 17th. Does that sound right, or do you guys think it will be longer than that? After that, I'm going to begin focusing on getting a job. I've applied to probably twenty places by now, but I'll put all of my energy into a job if I don't hear good news by Friday.
  14. I'm dying to have OSU accept me. Less than two weeks before I know what the future holds!
  15. Congrats! I am wait listed at three, and I had an interview about teaching high school English in NOLA. I should hear back from the job around the same time that I hear about grad schools! So if one of the three doesn't work out, I'm going to apply to grad school again next year, too!
  16. I've heard that you should wait and not accept anything until you know for sure. You don't want to burn any bridges, especially if you are considering a teaching position at that university upon graduation.
  17. I'm on the wait list at Cincinnati, too. This is not to sound ungrateful in the least because I'm incredibly happy about OSU, OU, and UC, but can someone please accept me already? I'm beginning to regret turning down my unfunded MA at Temple, but then I remind myself that it was not feasible to pay for a masters degree. I'm going to begin practicing breathing exercises.
  18. I focus on gothic nineteenth-century ecocriticism, but I thought I would ask anyway. I hope you choose the school that best fits your needs and scholarship!
  19. Are you nineteenth century literature? What was your subfield listed at OSU? By the way, how did your campus visit go?
  20. Though the application season is nearly over, I'm oddly optimistic that something good is going to come by way--an acceptance anywhere at this point with funding would be fantastic. Though, if you don't intend to go to OSU, let them know. ;)

  21. I have four more to hear from. The season's not over for me yet!
  22. I'm in the middle of several shows. If I would have thought about majoring in film freshman year, my obsession would probably be worse. 1. Walking Dead 2. Fresh Off the Boat 3. Lie to Me 4. Scandal (I've only seen the first two episodes since the mid-season finale) 5. Elementary 6. Project Runway (I say this with no shame) 7. White Collar I'll think of more later. My television obsession is endless.
  23. Brandeis rejection today. Four more schools to go--all MAs left.
  24. I'm just waiting for my real rejections from every other school I've applied to.
