  1. Talk about a writer whose words can shake your to the core and make your skin crawl (not in a bad way). I had such a visceral reaction to Disgrace when I read it. The man is a true genius
  2. Your predicament is famous on the forum now, and I think it's time for you to just call and let him have it...anyone is entitled to being angry, and there really isn't a plausible rebuttal to you being furious about something he promised you and failed to produce on time.
  3. wow, zero tolerance?! That is crazy. I'd like to know more about this too...since I definite want to work during school
  4. Considering the writing sample is the only other organic piece of the application besides your SOP, I feel like you shouldn't even consider not sending one in. This is what fleshes you out beyond the numbers, and shows the adcom how you tick. Definitely go for it!
  5. Oh dear >_< I wrote in the wrong GRE score....how embarrassing. I scored V:700 not 740. (I wish I got 740). Stupid edit option on the forum, I totally missed my window
  6. Perhaps law schools butter you up to make up for the boot camp from hell that will be the first semester
  7. I didn't get to drink this when working on my apps because I'm in China, and western goods are expensive. But...I would've loved to make my weirdly delicious hot chocolate and tequila concoction. For those who are revolted by the idea of it, don't knock it till you try it A generous splash of tequila in hot chocolate gives it an extra edge as well as a burst of warmth, great for really cold nights.
  8. Antique
  9. I'll be 23 if I get accepted next fall. Took a year off after I graduated to take some non-credit classes, though now I wish I applied for an MA for this year so I have a better chance of getting into a Ph.D program
  10. I went to a decent state school and majored in English, GPA: 3.56 (it's pretty much one bad semester can do ) GRE: V:740 Q:730 AW:4.5 (that writing score is pretty sad for an English major) Research interests: Sociology of culture, immigration, historical/comparative sociology Applied to: Princeton, Northwestern, U Chicago, Columbia, Rutgers, NYU, Harvard (looking at this list, I think I applied out of my league, so I will gather my resources for that very real possibility of applying for an MA program and then reapplying to the Ph.D later)
  11. Suicide!
  12. I've been obsessively trimming my split ends too! I moved to Beijing this summer for a year, where air is really dry and water is really hard, so my hair's been splitting like crazy. I went for 2 hours straight once.....not proud
  13. Er, the deadline for U Chicago was only 10 days ago, and the application page says their decisions are made early March. Whoever posted their acceptance must have been dreaming.
  14. See if you can start guilting your professor about ruining your future. I did with a lot of sappy, helpless emails to my own MIA LOR writer, and it eventually worked when she submitted her letter 1 hour before my U Chicago deadline. Good luck with this!
  15. I wonder if it's too late to caution you against applying to Mason Gross School at Rutgers...the school's been making tons of cuts during my time there, and I feel like it's a program that's being slowly abandoned
  16. Hey, your hubby should contact Rutgers Recreation about becoming an instructor for their non-credit recreational courses. I use to be on the executive board for one of the martial art clubs (capoeira) and it's under the same department, so I'm talking with some pseudo-credibility http://forum.thegradcafe.com/uploads/emoticons/default_tongue.gif' alt=':-P'>. They hire tons of people to teach martial arts, dance, and sports, and your husband sounds like someone who could really bring great things to the table. I know undergrad students can apply to form clubs, but I don't know if graduate students can do the same, but you can also look into having your husband become one of the instructors (or coach) for Rutgers Martial Arts Club, their club officers can tell you specifics about how to do it. One of the most well organized martial arts clubs on campus is the jujitsu club so you can also contact them for more information. Sorry I didn't actually offer any solid info!
  17. Chinese immigration to the U.S, inter-generation tension for immigrant families, and identity.
  18. I did notice that in the application too, however a lot of faculty members have cultural sociology in their interests, plus they encourage developing specialization by affiliating with other department.
  19. I've been mostly lurking the forums, but I guess I'll introduce myself too. I'm 22, and I just graduated Rutgers with a BA in English and Visual Arts. Cum GPA 3.56. Took the GRE twice this summer first time was V630 Q740 AW4.5, second time was V700 Q690 AW4.5. I'm interested in doing Sociology of Culture and Ethnography with a focus on Chinese Immigration in the U.S. So my numbers aren't too great, but I still decided to apply to some very good schools: Northwestern, U Chicago, Princeton, Rutgers, NYU, Columbia, and Harvard because they're all pretty good fits for me, and don't have an overt quantitative focus (many highly rated programs did, so I decided not to apply at all, since this process is eating so much funds right now). My top choices are Northwestern, Princeton, and Rutgers...I wonder how much more competitive it is to get in now with so many applicants and so little money to go around. Good luck to all of you, the painful waiting game is right around the corner.
