Visit Before or After Admissions Decision?
Generis replied to AnxiousUrbanPlanner's topic in Waiting it Out
I met with one POI beforehand, and it was a very positive experience. I learned a lot about the program, and discovered various overlapping values the POI and I both had about our field and learned about other opportunities. I used these points in my SOP about how I was a good fit for the program. It earned me an interview, so I have no regrets! I'd say one of the most important things is that I learned that the POI's personality could "mesh" well with mine. I want graduate school to be productive and positive, not hell on earth! -
Psych Results Page Questions/Clarifications

Anyone have information about UT Austin developmental psych invites?? -
Thanks for your response! I ended up getting an email from a POI from one of the schools I only had 2 LORs for, so I guess they are still looking =)!

Soooo how bad is it to have LORs come in 4 weeks after due date? One of mine waits until the last possible moment, then disappeared over break.

My goal is research, my back up is research, my current job is research. Not getting in a phd program isn't the end of the world if it's the research you are after. There are many ways to conduct good, meaningful work that do not require a Ph.D. :)

For UC Berkeley, it's 99% rejection programs usually invite more candidates to interview than they offer admission to, so that pool is both admission students and waitlist students. At least, that's what I've come to understand...

Psychology students hearing about interviews
Generis replied to kara.spinney's topic in Psychology Forum
I got an invitation to interview yesterday, and from the results page of the last handful of years, the earliest this department had ever sent out invites before is Jan 5th. It's happening crazy fast with some of these schools this year. -
I just learned that Claude Steele is now at Berkeley! Good luck to you all:)))

ALL DONE!!!! Yay! Good luck to everyone!!!

I've heard of contacting the admissions to ask them to just attach a note saying it was accepted. But alternatively, you can not reach out and save this information to drop in your interviews

I'm half way through! It takes an incredible amount of time to integrate the research interests of different POIs in my statement of purposes, even though they are all related... Anyone else spending a ridiculous amount of time weaving this into their SOPs??? I think it's well worth it!

I always thought low SES was preferred, as they are underserved populations just like ethnic minorities. It contributes to diversity, as most students who go to graduate school come from mid to high SES. They also realize that low SES students might not have had the opportunities to show of their stuff as much as a high SES student. For example, working two jobs in school limits your ability to volunteer as a research assistant and earn experience as an undergraduate, even if you could be the best research assistant ever. At least, this is what I thought...

I doubt this is enough to be the deciding point between you getting a school and them not offering you admission.

I thought I'd give an update on this meeting, just in case it is helpful for everyone else! In the meeting, the POI asked me what I'm all about and what I want to do. I described my research interests, experience, and it was a lot of back and forth about where we could see our work fitting in with each other's planned work. It was very smooth! I got to see some of the projects they were working on, learn about projects that are planned for the future. I learned a lot of useful information, such as how many students they already had, how much funding the school had right now to take on more students, and they even gave me advice about other programs I was applying to! Overall I'm glad I made that effort to talk to them in person! Would definitely recommend it to others who are scoping out programs!

Great, thanks everyone!

Hi all, Has anyone visited a prospective program and met with POIs before applying? I had emailed a POI to further discuss his research interests and if he was talking students, and he invited me to a chat in person. I'm pretty sure this is a good sign because I sent my CV and background info, so I don't think he would offer if I looked like a waste of time. But I'm wondering if others have done similar visits, and if so, did these meetings just consist of elaborate question and answer sessions? What was your experience like? Thanks!

So happy everything is out of my hands now! Good luck to everyone, let's forget about it until April =)

People who know statistics and can communicate their complex ideas clearly are worth their weight in gold.

A lot of it might sound standard, but it's important to say why you want to work with that POI and what in your background prepared you for it. I wouldn't mention specific articles, but you could mention specific ideas or researchs interests you are particularly interested in. If you are interested in a POI but don't have access to their articles, you can try messaging them to say you are interested in their work and wanted to read more before you apply, but don't have access. I've already had a POI gladly send over some articles that are too recent to be in my access =)

I've heard that the rule is nothing gets a heading (i.e. "Peer-reviewed publications") unless there are two entries. If you only have this pub, I would maybe think to put it with your presentations and call the whole thing "Publications and Presentations" =)
