I hate sharing a single bathroom with two roommates. They keep the bathroom clean and are pretty respectful, it's just that every time I REALLY need to use the bathroom, one of them takes a shower. Either they have the worst timing ever, or my body's waste removal system just likes to torture me .

For the record, we're all girls so these are NOT short showers.

I also second this, I live in Astoria right now and it's amazing. Great school district and it's about 20-30 minutes to NYU (you only have to take the N train there) Astoria is nice because it's a mix of areas. You have the main streets where there's some hustle and bustle for when you and your family want to eat out/have fun but you can find apartments away from those streets as well.

Manhattan can get pretty pricey, but there are some more affordable areas if you look around. If you don't mind living in one of the other boroughs, Astoria in Queens is a really nice area with a good school system. Astoria is also about a 5-15 minute train ride into Manhattan depending on where you are.

Dude, I don't think your qualifications were the reason for your rejection...

I would like to vent about loud vents. Some days ambient noise really annoys me.

I was accepted at MIT Biology today! I have been to NYU, Berkely, UCSF, Harvard and I have to say there is no place like MIT. I am 100% sure I'm going, and I'm 100% sure this is the right decision. I am so happy I finally found the place I will call home for the next 5-7 years

So, those of us who don't need a masters are told we need one and those of us who do need a masters are told we don't need one. You just can't win.

Lol, my family had the same reaction. I was at a Christmas dinner with my extended family, all of whom are lawyers, and they we got on the topic of grad school. They asked me if I was going to be able to get a job to pay off all of my loans from school and I told them I had no loans. I then explained how PhD funding worked and they all stared at my wide eyed. Up until that moment I thought they all knew that I was essentially getting paid to go to school. My father had never looked so proud (and a little bit smug) after I revealed that bit of information.

Fellow international here- Hmm, did you talk with any potential advisers? I've found that they are extremely influential in your admission and are actually the ones who 'endorse' you to your department so to speak. No adviser = no one to fight for you in the grad committee. If you have, you could try sending them an email to see where you are in the process?

I'm a lurker who creeped through this thread and forum through application and interview period and I just wanted to sort of thank everyone for their advice and discussion, even though I didn't take active part in it. I just had a really great PhD interview at a school and at the end, my prospective adviser said they'd recommend me for admission! It will still be up to the department since they provide the funding but I'm crossing my fingers that the result is positive. I find out in two weeks!

Hmm, I took my laundry home to wash it... But I would take it home and wash it myself! The laundry machines in my dorm were stupid expensive, they broke all the time, and people would often steal your clothes or take them out mid-cycle and leave them sopping wet in the middle of the dirty floor. Since I went home often anyways (my parents lived very close to campus), it was easier to just do my laundry at home without the hassle.

I understand the feeling. I have seen lots of this during this application cycle... people with no clue about who to ask for recommendations, what schools to apply to, how to narrow their research interests, etc., and especially with those who have mediocre profiles that want to know if they have chance at top programs. Those in particular get very offended by honesty and are hostile to recommendations to aim lower or get more experience. I got really annoyed when one person asked about potential masters programs they could apply to and I suggested mine, and then they were completely dismissive of it because the program's webpage had a a few typos. With an attitude like that, I would be surprised if they got in anywhere.

Thought of another one...This is like World's Dumbest Criminals only World's Dumbest College Students.

When I was a TA I had two girls hand in the exact same paper. Literally, word for word. The sad part was that it was a horrible paper that would've probably earned a D+ grade anyway. The only difference between the papers were the names. I talked to my advisor and he handled it. Turns out, he sent a pretty intimidating email to them about academic dishonesty, the consequences, etc and met with them in person afterward and scared them pretty good.

One of the girls went out of her way to find me on facebook (unprofessional) and sent me a pretty angry private message (unprofessional x2) "yelling" at me for ratting her out...Like I was supposed to let a copied paper fly under the radar (lol)? I was in disbelief. I thought it was common sense not to copy and paste someone else's paper, but I must've been mistaken.

I just returned from another interview trip in the US so I don't think it has quite yet sunk into my jetlagged brain, because I feel like I should be crying with joy. I've tried to imagine this moment so many times but it's finally here. All the hard work has been worth it. That is such a relief.
