  1. I've noticed some people have started to hear back early from programs about admission - so thought it would be a good idea to start an official thread to track all admission offers, scholarships, etc. I haven't heard back from any programs yet, but would love to know what programs are sending out letters already!
  2. I'd be interested in doing this, though I haven't written mine yet. I am actually a bit worried about writing it since I haven't had to overcome racial, etc. barriers, and while I have volunteered in various capacities I don't think anything qualifies enough to be considered "advancing equitable access" in any impressive fashion. Anyone have any thoughts?
  3. Hi Peter, Are you in state or out of state? I am out of state and will want a good chunk of funding, but am not sure how likely that is. Thanks!!
  4. Would love to be evaluated as well! Program Applied To: MPA, MPP Schools Applied To: CMU, GW, Penn, GPPI, American, Pitt, Hopkins, Berkeley, UMd, Wagner Undergraduate institution: top 15 liberal arts Undergraduate GPA: 3.7 Undergraduate Major: Music, anthropology GRE Quantitative Score: 740 GRE Verbal Score: 580 GRE AW Score: 5.0 Years Out of Undergrad (if applicable): 3+ Years of Work Experience:3+ Describe Relevant Work Experience: Spent 3+ years working at a health related nonprofit, doing mostly programming work, rose to project management position Strength of SOP (be honest, describe the process, etc): I haven't started this yet (ack!) but plan to write about my growing interest in a nonspecified sector, how my volunteer and work experience has greatly aided me in this.. I really need help here :/ Strength of LOR (be honest, describe the process, etc): 1 from current boss (should be good), 1 from past professor, not sure if should aim for second academic or 2nd work related being over 3 years out? Questions: I think for the most part I at least have a decent shot at getting into most of these schools based on the stats they release, but what I am really worried about is funding. Do I have a shot? It's a motley crew of schools too, am I correct in my assumption that I have a better shot at funding from the 'less popular' of those schools?
  5. I'm a bit over 3 years out of undergrad (graduated in 08) and have worked at the same company since then. Right now I have my current supervisor writing a recommendation, and am going to have an old professor do one as well. For the 3rd LOR.. should it be professional or academic? Would I be better off choosing another professor, or another colleague? I have also been involved in a few 'extracurriculars' over the years since undergrad, and have had supervisors through those, but not any whom I was super close to. Thoughts? Recommendations? Thanks!
  6. The main differences I can see are that the Fels is two years, SP2 is one year; and also SP2 doesn't offer a traditional MPA, but instead either a degree in social policy or one in NGO management. Does that help? It is odd that they are two separate schools, but you can take classes at either one through either program, so it's just about which program fits your needs (Fels also seems to lean more heavily towards government and political work).
  7. Hi iamtired, The earliest date I have come across is Dec 2nd (Berkeley)
  8. I am a bit overwhelmed by the sheer number of MPA/MPP programs out there. I have an idea of what kind of program I want, but literally weeding through the options is overwhelming. I have been going down the US News and World report list for some guidance, and while I should be able to get into some of the top programs (knock on wood) I don't want to ignore other "lesser" programs just because they are lower on the list. But the process of going to every schools site and sifting through is frankly quite tedious. How has everyone else been tackling literally picking programs to apply to?
  9. Thanks for the tip! I'm also going to look into universities that have public health schools too I think, not so much for the MPH program, but if they allow you to take electives cross-department (ex. Berkeley)
  10. Hi all, I am planning to apply to MPP/MPA programs this fall, and would like to focus on schools that either offer concentrations/specializations in food and nutrition policy, or at least offer some electives in it. Does anyone have suggestions on programs to look at? All I can think of to do right now is google, and I am only coming up with the UMass Amherst program, and I don't necessarily think that school would be a good fit for me. Anyone come across any nutrition/food electives in their searching? Thanks!
  11. Could someone give me an idea of what the average age and # of years experience in MPA programs is? I have over a year experience and am 23 (but am looking to hold off on grad school until 2011)
  12. I am strongly considering getting an MPA. My career goal (as it stands now.. always open to change) is to one day run my own arts advocacy non-profit. I know this question sounds somewhat ridiculous, but how would getting a master's degree help me reach this goal? Or alternatively, what doorways would the degree open? I know that many say that getting connections is a big reason for entering one of these programs but for me I don't think that makes a lot of sense considering the amount of debt I would go into. So, what kind of job oppurtunities would this degree open up for me? Does anyone have a link to a list of job title and companies/government agencies that MPAs now sit in? And are there any current or graduated MPAs on this discussion board with any insight on this topic? Thanks!
  13. Are there any part-time MPA/MPP programs? I am planning on getting one of these degrees, but would like to work full-time while doing it. In fact, given that many people with these degrees don't get super impressive salaries, I'm surprised that more people don't want to work while getting their degree. (I personally plan on focusing on non-profit management, likely in an MPA program.) Does anyone have any insight? Thanks!
