SLP California Applicants for Fall 2014
ZIGGY replied to dial1010usa's topic in Speech-Language Pathology Forum
Yes, I heard from CSUN ... & rejected BUT, still hoping for CSULB's special cohort. Haven't heard anything yet, though. Your interview was a few weeks before mine, so maybe I'll hear results in a few weeks! -

AHH! that's great news! Congratulations! I know that was your first choice! My interview went well (I hope!). I thought it was a group interview but mine ended up being just me in the interview although there was another girl waiting as well. They told me I should hear by this week. So I've been pretty anxious today & yesterday. However, they also said if we don't hear this week it doesn't necessarily mean we didn't get in bc they're still doing interviews. But you got your notice in the mail?? I'm gonna go straight home & check when I can! so nervous. Congrats, again! -

How did your interview go? I also have an interview for their special cohort program in a week! I'm very excited, since this is the only school that I've heard good news from! But at the same time, extremely nervous! I know that it's a group interview also ...which makes me a little anxious. How many were in your group? and, CONGRATULATIONS to you! especially since it's your first choice! hopefully we'll be in this together!! -

It depends. (You're inquiring for your daughter, correct?) Does she have her BA in communicative disorders? If so, she can attend CSUN's online SLPA program. There's a class that last for a couple months (I believe) and in addition to that, you complete an internship where you shadow & work with a licensed SLP. After you've successfully completed the course & 70 fieldwork hours, you'll be able to apply for your SLPA license (which entails gathering appropriate signatures, paperwork, & background checks & submitting it to the CA licensing board). There are other requirements you could fulfill instead of the 70 fieldwork hrs -- Must have 70 hours of fieldwork experience OR nine months of full-time work experience performing the duties of an SLPA in a public school setting OR nine months of full-time work as an SLPA in another state with the appropriate authorization to practice. (According to CA state licensing board) There are community colleges where you can receive an associates degree in communicative disorders, but that will take 2 years. After that, you'll still need to complete 80 hrs during an internship. Here's a link to the CA licensing board website: http://www.speechandhearing.ca.gov/applicants/app_pack_slp_assist.shtml and FAQs on the ASHA website: http://www.asha.org/associates/SLPA-FAQs.htm#g2

I, too, work as a SLPA and have been for the past year & a half. Working in the field that you're intending to pursue higher education in is definitely a plus ...no matter what field that may be. I have been told by professors that admissions & graduate programs want to make sure you'll be a successful clinician, not just a successful student. That is why they take into consideration your work experience. There's no teacher like experience! It teaches you what textbooks don't! Plus, they also want to make sure that you're dedicated to the field. Programs don't want to invest time into people who won't end up using their education. If you've had previous experience under your belt, you're more likely to want to continue working in the field once you graduate (in their eyes). So, it definitely wouldn't hurt! I've honestly learned SO much working as a SLPA in California. But, I know that there is still so much more for me to learn. Being a SLPA actually motivates me more in terms of getting my MA. Having those restrictions (like not being able to assess, create goals, etc.), actually makes me want to learn more. Hope that helps!

CONGRATULATIONS! that must be such a weight lifted off your shoulders & you must be so ecstatic...especially this being your 2nd year applying! (I may need some tips from you, if I don't get in anywhere this year!) -

Yes, they have one. Chapman sent me an email with instructions on how to activate it & they give you a certain period of time to download the instructions. If you go over that time, the instructions disappear (sort of strange & mission impossible-esque, IMO lol!). You should try & contact them or check your spam folder. Something similar happened to me with CSUN. I never got the instructions how to activate my account & had to email different people to figure it out. Finally got the info from the IT help desk. Anyway, definitely contact them. It's even more nerve wracking because there's a box that's supposed to say Decision Pending or Decision Made. However, you won't know the actual decision until they mail it to you. -

Nik24 -- thanks for the info. I heard that some people got rejected from CSULB, however I'm still in limbo, which is giving me SOME hope. But, it's hard to hold onto. Let me know if you call chapman! I never know if I should contac schools or not because most say not to. I checked on the chapman portal for my admissions status & it says, "Decision Pending". Haven't gotten contacted for an interview but did do the supplemental application ...so maybe there's still hope there! Yancey -- thanks for the info too. I've been checking on the portals for each school almost every day but still no news! I'll get not worried if people start receiving acceptances & I haven't heard anything at all. -

I just wanna hear something already! I keep coming back to these forums to see if people have heard from the schools that I've applied to. I'm holding onto hope, but I'm getting nervous! A couple schools I've applied to say they "may" require an interview. I've heard that some people have had interviews this week, but I haven't been contacted at all for an interview! I don't know if me not being contacted is basically a rejection OR, maybe they liked me & didn't feel the need to interview me?! (HA, definitely wishful thinking though!) What do you guys think?? It's unbelievable how competitive this program is! & whenever I try to explain to non-CD people, they just don't get it! -

Has anybody heard anything from CSUN, CSULA, Chapman, or CSULB? I (pretty obviously) applied to those schools & more, but I haven't been contacted for an interview at CSULB or CSULA ...which really scares me. I'm going insane waiting for responses! I know I'm not alone too! I just wanna knowww! Good luck, everyone!
