  1. I feel like this week is the calm before the storm; everyone's biding their time, waiting to see what will happen. Hopefully, magically, we'll all get off the waitlists we want to get off of, get into the schools we want to get into, and find the fabled White Unicorn of Yore ladened with gobs and gobs of funding.
  2. Also, that it's nearly fully funded is pretty great. I'd definitely take it over an unfunded MA.

Very cool; have you visited the campus, or ever been to Blacksburg? It's fairly likely, but I'm still parsing out my interests; I really enjoy anything related to epistemology, but have recently taken an interest in causation and scientific explanation. I'd love to get into the philosophy of perception, and general metaphysics (I like thinking about what makes us persist, as us, through change). So, I think it'd be a pretty solid fit (in that I'm developing an interest in the philosophy of science), but I'd definitely take any offer with any kind of funding (VT is unfunded, for me). So, we'll see! Have you been accepted anywhere else?

We might end up being classmates. What do you think of VT's program, or at least what you've heard about it?
  5. Googled it and it sounds fairly peaty! That's the only way to go; I need to taste the beef jerky and funky socks to appreciate it. You weren't telling tall tales about your pockets drying up; a 10 year is pretty pricey.
  6. Nut/drupe/whatever beers need to happen more often. There's an excellent wild black walnut beer where I'm at, and I absolutely love what nuts/drups/whatever give to the beer. Have to say, though, that I definitely prefer whisky to whiskey; Islay scotch, fo' shurity.
  7. Lots of dreams are being crushed; lots of hopes are being dashed, so let's have a lighter thread! Whenver you leave your current school (or town, for those who aren't currently in school) for the next, what will you do? Personally, aside from the normal boring stuff, I'm going to finally eat in one of the campus dining halls; then, I'm going to have a nice, big cigar on the quad (we're a smoke-free campus, and the enforcers are all huge assholes about it).
  8. Ooohh yeaaaahh! http://medievalcollectibles.com/c-612-dark-moon-collection.aspx
  9. Everybody's winning! Congrats to both of you; I know, zizeksucks, that you've got to be pleased as a peach to not get shutout!

    Nice! Congratulations!
  12. And a link to TheGradCafe--the Marauder's Map of who's getting in.

Thanks! I'll definitely be bending your ear if I get an offer. My brother-in-law lives in Boston, so we've been a couple of times; really nice city. I rented a bike to ride in their critical mass, and had an awesome time! (The beer's a bit expensive, though.)
  14. Email; solicited. I also slipped them a fiver.

That's smart; in the fullness of time you'll have some idea of which is better.

I apparently am absolutely shameless about soliciting news from programs: Brandeis should be putting out their acceptances and rejections soon. On their waitlist.

That definitely makes it hard. How are you deciding between them?

"Email from Ted Hinchman. Low on waitlist." was posted on the results page for UW-Milwaukee. I'm wondering if they didn't specify my position, that I might be in the middle?

What Edit_Undo said, and the things you mentioned: funding, faculty (if you're interested in anyone specifically),location (both for recreation and cost of living--Boston [Tufts, Brandeis] would have a much higher cost of living than, say, Milwaukee or Blacksburg [Virginia Tech]), and placement (especially into schools you're interested in). Personally, WMU scores well in all of those areas for me (except, perhaps, funding). Kalamazoo is a great place and near family, good placement, and I'd love to work with Timothy McGrew (and meet Lydia McGrew). I can't really think of any other areas of concern when thinking about which offer to accept. Hands down, I'd go with whatever funding package is best (assuming there'll be one--if not, that complicates things). Are you trying to decide between departments?

A bag of Bertie Bott's Beans, some chocolate frog cards, and a kick in the pants.
  21. Larping! There are some crazy things people do with zombie larping... you can buy incredibly realistic foam riot shields, e.g., or human-leg-clubs. My experience with this type of stuff has been experiments with homemade boffer arrows. We had a few games, but they died off after I nailed my friend in the nose with a 20lb bow--blood just started pouring. We have access to 80 acres of land, though, and it'd be so cool to get 20 or so archers together to have a little war.

    Lame! Here's hoping for Brandeis!
  23. Good! 50% is crazy, and I imagine loads on the waitlist have been accepted elsewhere. Best of luck to you; Kalamazoo is a great town, with great beer, and Michigan is a truly wonderful state. We lived in Lake Orion and Auburn Hills for a bit (eastern side of the Mitten), and my wife's family is up in Traverse City. In all, I wouldn't mind settling in Michigan (and hunting bears). Dun, dun, dunnn. Boogie men will definitely come and steal your writing sample now!
