  1. I came across this article about feeling stupid in grad school. Basically it says that if you don't feel stupid in grad school, then you're doing it wrong. You'll probably feel inadequate surrounded by brilliant people, but these same people are likely either going through or have gone through the same struggles with feeling stupid as you are, and are too ashamed/afraid to say so.
  2. Some advice that I found very helpful is not to make excuses in your SoP. So you probably don't want to say that you didnt want to pursue grad studies upon graduating from your undergrad. You should mention your internship and other work that you've done since graduating that is relevant. What you probably should focus a lot on is what you want to do in grad school. The SoP should be forward looking to the research you want to do in grad school - and profs are more interested in your future plans than in a 'spicy' SoP. So my advice to you FWIW is to lay out what it is you want to do in grad school in detail. I think adcomms will find that interesting:)

  4. weninger, I came across a symposium in my field that is accepting abstracts for next year and was wondering if publishing at a symposium lends the same 'weight' as publishing at a conference. Also, of what value is publishing position papers? Thanks for any help you may give!
  5. NIPS is also a good conference for Artificial Intelligence

  9. Thanks for adding me.

  10. Yeah, just relax today. Make sure that you eat well before the test. Perhaps if you wanted, you could do some practice questions tomorrow just to get you in the frame of mind for the test.
  11. That's exactly what I was thinking. It found it a bit weird that the Director of Graduate Admissions suggested that I contact this other prof since we were from the same country even though our interests were different.
  12. I think you have a good idea. I think a detailed description of your work with him would be a good start. In particular, try to highlight things about yourself (honestly, of course) that adcomms would be looking out for -usually things such as 'takes initiative', your leadership abilities, you ability to do independent research, your dependability, your intelligence and whether you would be successful at grad school. Your LoR writer would probably edit the letter if he thinks some things need to be changed, but I'm thinking those are the kinds of things that a good LoR would possess.

  15. Hi rsandler00, I think the first paragraph you mentioned would be stronger if you were more positive about what you did, so instead of saying "My role consisted of..." say something like "I did..". Try to be more assertive rather than passive in your writing about what you have done. If possible talk about a challenge you faced and how you overcame it. For paragraph 2, I would take out this sentence entirely "In return for your confidence in me, I will give yourprogram as many years as is takes of uncompromisingly hard work. I have noillusions about the difficulty of successfully completing a PhD, I only askthat you give me the opportunity and help to do so." It sounds a bit like you're begging them. Instead I think you should show that your interests and background would fit well at that program, perhaps by describing a problem that you would like to tackle.

  23. You're going to have a harder time getting into a Computer Architecture program with no work in that area, but it is still possible. You're going to have to convince the adcomm that you have the ability and experience to succeed in that area though. Architecture and systems aren't my areas so I'm not sure of any schools that would be a good fit for you.
  24. I think you have a good profile and should have a good shot at all those schools you mentioned. I would encourage you to focus your interests a little more since 5 areas are a lot to put in an application. I think the schools you applied to are good ones for your interests. A word of caution though, I wouldn't consider Tufts a 'safe' school since their department is small - they take on less than 20 students each year. UC Irvine is another school you could consider for ML/CV. As for your reach school, your research experience should give you a decent shot, but as you know, top 10 schools are so competitive that it's hard to predict.
