Great advice. This is pretty relevant to the sciences as well, thanks.

I don't know if this gives you much solace, but you're not the only one! What has helped me is that I try to limit my focus on myself (I'm never good at talking or writing about me) and focus instead on my research interests. It's still easier said than done, but I find it a lot more manageable.

It is advisable that you choose an area that you want to focus on - how else will the adcomms know if you are a good fit for their university? Are you interested in a professional MS or in ultimately getting a PhD? If it's a professional MS you might be able to get in with a vague description of your interests, but with a research based MS you really need to have a good idea of what you want to study in grad school. As for schools that you could apply to, you might want to look at http://www.cs.utep.edu/admissions/ Its a site from UTEP that tries to guess which schools you would have a chance at based on your scores and a few other criteria. It's not really exact but it can give you some schools to check out. -
Ah, didn't know that he was a software developer for 6 years. I guess that explains why he wanted to switch. I think he got his MSE in the process of getting his PhD since according to his resume he was pursuing them simultaneously for a while.

It depends on the schools. A few schools (and probably not the top ones) have cutoff marks for the AWA score. If the programs you are applying to do not have a cutoff score, then you should be perfectly ok. The AWA score is probably the least important thing for an engineering applicant, plus your SoP will show your writing ability. So my advice is to check to make sure that your schools do not have a cutoff AWA score like 4.0 - if they don't then don't sweat it.

Well its probably best to use your permanent address but remember that even if they sent you an acceptance at this time, it wouldn't be something that would need a response immediately, you would have until April 15 to respond to a funded offer. The only communication I can think of that you would be likely to get at this time that would require immediate attention would be a request for an interview, and that would likely come by email or phone. I can't imagine them sending a request for an interview by snail mail.
-
I think most schools use email to communicate though and they wouldn't send you a (snail) mail possibly until you have been accepted, and even then the notification will likely be online. Is there a particular school that you're concerned about that says they will send you a snail mail? Also, I'm not sure what materials they could be sending during the winter break, if they want an interview with you around January, then they will likely email or call. That said, it probably would be better for you to use your permanent address, since you will have quick access at all times to your snail mail since your parents could always send it to you.

What areas are you interested in? To determine which schools to apply to, you really have to look to see which schools match up best with your interests. -
Study CS or Statistics to work in Data Science

What's your BA in? Do you have a background in maths? If not it might be a good idea to go back to get a bachelors in either computer science (with some statistics classes) or math/statistics if you want to get into data science as a profession. If you already have a bachelors in math or a related field then I wouldn't think that you needed a second bachelors. -

I'll give you my thoughts if you want. You can PM me. -
Have you contacted applyyourself about it? I had an issue last time I applied and they responded to my email fairly quickly.

Study CS or Statistics to work in Data Science

I think Nathan Yau gave a pretty good answer in that thread. That said though, there's a lot of overlap between computer science and statistics, particularly in machine learning, where many statisticians are studying machine learning and many machine learning researchers are studying statistics. -
I think any field that has to do with the managing of data is definitely going to be in demand in the next 5 - 10 years and I think its only going to get more popular. In addition, statistics is integral to so many other fields, especially in science and technology, that there really should be a good job market for statisticians in the next decade. Of course, carving out a niche for yourself will only make yourself even more marketable as Nathan Yau at http://flowingdata.com/ has done.

Oh ok. I was thinking that if one of you were an American and the other not, then it might make a difference if you were married before you applied since the one who would have been international, could apply as a resident. But since you are both international, then it might make a difference in terms of if one of you got into grad school and the other didn't. In that case, if you were married, the spouse who didn't get in to grad school would be able to come and live with the other in the US with the required visa. I don't know if it makes a difference otherwise though.
