  1. Just deactivate before the interview and then say you don't have one.
  2. And unfortunately I think Linguistics is still dominated by a few male names who care only for their own ideas. I think it's great there are so many women, but my guess is they also have a financially solvent male figure in the equation.
  3. Well, I don't think you realize how lucky you are. Wake up!
  4. What are they then if not an expression of ourselves?
  5. Good luck everyone. Funding is essential. Don't take that lightly.
  6. Two years ago David Harrison, a prominent linguist and co-founder of Living Tongues mentioned at a conference that he felt terrible writing letters of recommendations because there is just so little funding nowadays. And the only sexists out there are those who assume I'm a man. I said nothing about women, just married women. And I bet all of you are married, right? Lol
  7. What makes me a troll?
  8. How can someone with the name gendertreachery be a sexist? That assumption is simple-minded. The truth is that a lot of talented young men out there have no source of monetary support and are left with crippling amounts of debt. It's irresponsible for universities and their professors to encourage young people to matriculate in their graduate programs without 100% funding. As an academic, I would be appalled.
  9. I'm not a sexist by any means. But the current trend suggests an overwhelming # of women, especially married women, in graduate school. I hope my negativity will enlighten some out there who are headed for a lifetime of debt. That is the reality of Linguistics programs. By no funding, I simply mean there's no funding. What about that is not clear?
  10. I did. I was very frank in my assumption that I think a high school drop out verifies these records (ok, I didn't actually say that). Not to mention the increased cost their service unnecessarily incurs.
  11. I'm talking graduate school of any kind.
  12. Did you apply for Spring season and not get in or only last year Fall?
  13. Well if there's no funding and a surplus of unemployed linguists out there, it's not worth it. Study in Norway or Germany. Tuition free.
  14. I don't find CSDCAS a useful service at all. In fact, they can't even add the number of credits correctly. They say my undergraduate career consists of 118 credits, which is impossible since you need at least 120 in the semester system to graduate. 30 times 4 years. I actually had 127 credits, so I wonder why there are 9 missing. In addition, they counted all my Linguistics courses as Basic Communication Processes, classes like History of Germanic, when this category is clearly meant for CSD courses according to the their description. This annoys me because my CSD GPA is now lower than it should be. And then they left out History of English and classified it as "Other", so their verification is truly arbitrary and not at all efficient.
  15. The list here isn't completely accurate, but a good starting point. I made one last year for myself, but honestly, it's one of those things I think you need to search for yourself. This is a competitive field, and the way I see it, knowledge of which programs offer spring admission is power. It's part of the game to keep the ball in your court, as unfortunate and unfair as that sounds. But hey, that's America. All about competition and the individual.
  16. Are there any men out there though who haven't been admitted and are on their 2nd or 3rd season of applications?
  17. Does anyone know anything about this program, university or the location (Tahlequah, OK)?
  18. What a pain in the buttock their application portal is. It doesn't simplify anything, only makes the application process more tedious. And more expensive. Steer clear! Write your departments and complain. Or your congress-person! Lol.
  19. I hope she writes you a nice one though. My experience in another field in the past is that if there are any doubts, any signs things aren't going to get done, the letters aren't going to be very strong either, and sometimes they might not even be a recommendation at all! Trust your instincts during this process even if it's a pain.
