  1. I'm assuming your talking about a master's thesis, right? If you take a Research and Methods class in your program, I think there is a book that your required to get that helps with the thesis writing. My program had that requirement, and I initially had the book but I didn't end up using it or find it too helpful. I don't remember the name of the book I used, but it was called How to Write your Dissertation (I think) and I used it in the revision stages of my thesis. That said, I wish I had access to this book before the planning and writing stages because it was REALLY helpful. I also emailed a colleague from my program (I did 7 months of research in another country and most of my initial writing, setup, and planning was conducted from there) from time to time for advice and that was helpful.
  2. Thank you for your post. I am interested in doing a PHd in Political Science with a focus on International Relations doing research on security issues. I have been doing a little bit of research on specific universities, and I recently went to a conference where I presented a paper I spoke to a faculty member whose focus is on security issues and she told me about a few schools: John Hopkins, MIT, and Princeton. However, I still feel lost as I have only identified a few schools and would prefer to apply to at least 7-10 schools: some reach, some where I am competitive, and some safeties. My ultimate goal is to go into academia and research, and a lot of people at conferences (APSA and regional) told me there is discrimination (in terms of academic jobs) against schools that are policy based i.e. Georgetown and SAIS. If any one can help out, I would be most appreciative!!
  3. Hi, I am beginning my application process for Fall 2017, i.e. studying for the GRE's. I am looking at narrowing down schools for where I want to apply. I am interested in focusing on International Relations with a concentration on security issues. I am really interested in potentially researching non state actors and their effects on local and global levels. I have tried googling security PHds but I haven't found much. I think Stanford is supposed to be strong, and I know MIT is great (it's actually my dream school) and I know GWU is also a great contender. However, what are other options. Do people know? If you do, could you reply? I would really appreciate any assistance people can provide me with.
  4. @med latte thanks!! so my presentation was on the last day and I watched the way the other presenters presented as a blueprint. I also practiced every day of the conference and reread some important readings to ensure I would be able to handle feedback. Good luck!!!
  5. Oh and I had practiced for a 15-17 minute presentation because someone dropped out of the panel and the discussant said I would have that much time. However, the chair announced we would only have 10-12 minutes, luckily I had practiced so much I was able to improvise.
  6. Thanks for the advice on this thread, and thank you OP for posting this thread! I was very nervous because I presented my first paper at a regional Political Science conference this past weekend. I followed the advice of this thread and put together a powerpoint presentation, and practice-practice-practiced! When I presented my entire body was literally shaking but no one noticed, everyone said I did a good job and the discussant provided me with very helpful advice for submitting it for publication and suggested I turn this into a book project! So thank you everyone.
  7. My master's program only gave Pass as an option for the thesis.. Will that be a problem?
  8. Thank you for rephrasing my question and for your input. Yeah, I kind of came to your reasoning when identifying schools that I would want to work at/in. Some of the schools I will be applying to are also because of the Political Scientists at that particular institution.
  9. Sorry, if my title is confusing. I am interested in applying for PHd programs in International Relations/Political Science for Fall 2017. I will take from January-June to prepare for the GRE's as my math skills are not that strong. I did my MA in Government and Politics and received a 3.64 because of two B+'s on my transcript. My goal is to have a strong GRE score, but I would like to know does ranking of school make a difference, school name, or strength in particular area? I am interested in Security Issues, my master's thesis was focused on a non state actor's relationship with the populace in a Middle Eastern country (I conducted 7 months field research in the said country), and in November, I will be presenting part of my paper at the NPSA conference. I have been told to try and get a job focusing on research with a thinktank in my gap year (prior to hopefully starting the PHd) or to go back to the Middle East (which I have work experience in international development/international human rights). So my question is what is better in identifying schools to apply to? Rankings? Name? Or strength in said area? Thanks!!
  10. I actually decided against it, instead I'm just going to apply for PHd programs. I went to the APSA Annual Meeting this past week and every single person graduate student/professor I met tried to convince me otherwise, they basically told me I'm wasting my time. Thanks for the response and advice though!
  11. Joining the boat on this: 1. Mom = like the others not qualified, but someday! 2. Researcher for ICG or CFR Fellow 3. International Relations Professor 4. Save the World 5. Journalist in combat/conflict zone with assurances that I won't get raped, attacked, or tortured 6. Aid worker in ME with UN/Mercy Corps/IGO that pays really well 7. Policy Advisor to the State Department or President on MENA issues sorry, I got greedy with the numbers, it did say DREAM job-didn't it?
  12. Hi! It's my first time applying for the Fulbright. I am applying for the UK-Mphil program. I know the UK is very competitive, but I am hoping my application will be successful. I have been researching the Fulbright and thinking about how to formulate my application. I have a MA already from an American university which I did in Rome, Italy; and international development experience which I hope will benefit my application. The majority of time I have spent in the UK has been about 10 days to visit family and friends, so I don't think that will hinder my application. Hopefully I can share my SOP and PS with some of you when its ready!
  13. I am interested in applying for Fall 2015. So far, I have all A-'s in all my classes, and one B+ when I was taking the quarter from hell so I could have the summer off for internships. I am in my last class right now and my thesis. Will that one B+ hurt me when I apply? I really need to make up for a low UG GPA. I don't have a lot of research and publication experience, most of my professional experience has been in both domestic and federal U.S. government and non governmental professional work abroad.
