  1. y'all are not alone.. I am in the same boat! 2nd time applying... still waiting to hear from 2 schools but so far have been denied by 4, it's not looking good this time around either. I have been an SLP-A for the past 2 years but definitely ready to move on to something more "stable". I am going to try to talk with some professionals in the same field as SLP (I have a friend who's mom is a psychologist and knows a lot of people in the field) to see what other jobs/careers/options are out there. It is frustrating to have to think I need to change my career because these schools don't think I'm "good enough" when I am providing speech therapy every day to my clients.... most of my clients parent's dont even realize i'm an "assistant".
  2. My galaxy portal updated to denied over a week ago and I got a letter in the mail on Friday. I live really close to the campus so it probably got to me pretty quickly after they mailed it.
  3. I am in the same boat. Second time applying for fall 2015. First time i applied was in 2012 and I have worked as an SLPA in the home health setting in Texas ever since. I love my job, however home health can be pretty draining... luckily I don't have a family (husband or kids) or too many other commitments because my job takes up a lot of time and energy. there are some people at my work that have been there for 5-6 years that are married, have kids, etc. and i have no idea how they do it! we can make good money- but we only get paid per session, so if a lot of clients don't show up or cancel during the month, then you don't get paid... that being said, we rarely get time off unless you plan it out right, yet you still have to make up those visits so its just more work at a different time. I enjoy the kids I work with and my clients range from artic only, autism, non verbal, down syndrome, etc. so we get to see a little bit of everything. Yet, I am still trying to see what other options might be out there because I don't think I can be an SLPA forever.... I am willing to take classes/go to school for another degree/etc. but don't really know where to start and what other options are out there.. it makes me sad that i'm not "good enough" to make it into grad school when I am treating clients every single day and making a difference in their lives. most of the parents don't even realize that i am an "assistant". but the grades have to trump the experience and skills that WE have, which is just not fair. i believe there is something out there for all of us.... the process is just frustrating of figuring it all out.
  4. I live in Dallas and have known plenty of people that have lived in the village. I actually use to live in an apartment complex right across the street from the village called The Avery on Southwestern which is also nice! (check it out as well.. I lived there with a roommate and it was reasonably priced for sure) The Village is cool- its a ton of apartment complexes but with the trees, giant park, gym, tennis courts, etc. it feels like a little community within the city. I know they have a lot of events at the country club area for people that live there and it seems like there are people out and about all the time. nearby there is a Target, Walmart, Tom Thumb (groceries), LA Fitness, Central Market, Chick Fil A, In-N-Out..... just about everything haha and it's right off of the highway so its easy to get around. Northbridge and Upper East Side are the newer complexes so obviously, they are a little nicer along with a little pricier. Those 2 complexes allow pets I believe, but I think the older ones don't allow pets (turn off for me because my boyfriend has a dog that comes over a lot). If you just go to the main office at the country club area of The Village they will give you information on all of them based on the price, etc. that you are looking for! The Village is about 15-20 minutes from the Callier Center I also commented earlier about apartments near Maple Avenue/Medical District. I highly suggest this area too because it is RIGHT next to the school with a lot of stuff around as well. I lived in this area 2 years ago, moved over by the village for a year because I had a roommate, and when it came time for me to look for a place to live again I moved back on Maple Ave. Just a suggestion--- but either area is great! I know from experience
  5. I am still waiting to hear from both UTD and UNT......
  6. I live in dallas and currently live right next to UTD's school. Look for apartments on Maple Avenue or search near the Medical District (The Link on Maple; 5225 Maple; The Southwestern on Maple; Amli on Maple; 21 Forty Medical District Apartments; Colonial Reserve at Medical District; Aura Medical District) I have lived in both The Link on Maple and 5225 Maple and currently live at one of those complexes. They are also building a couple of brand new apartments right at Inwood and Maple Ave. These are very very close to the school. Uptown is a good option too because it is not too far away and there is always The Village-- it is a bit further away but I think the rent might be a little cheaper over there (it is near SMU- a lot of SMU kids live there but its not wild and crazy full of college kids haha) I love the Maple Ave. area. I lived here 2 years ago, moved to another part of town (right across the street from The Village near SMU) because I had a roommate, then moved back over here. IT is close to uptown, close to the highways, and an easy drive to pretty much any other part of dallas you want to go to (lower greenville, deep ellum, etc.) Yes- I advise against South Dallas- I am an SLPA in the home health setting and I work in South Dallas and South Oak Cliff and it can be very rough. Deep Ellum isn't too bad if you find the right apartments. congrats to everyone who has gotten in-I'm still waiting! I drive by UTD everyday just crossing my fingers they'll let me in!
  7. I still haven't heard back.. I applied in february. I am getting anxious and thinking about calling the department sometime this week just to ease my nerves!
  8. I got an e-mail yesterday from ACU.... didn't make it... It was sent at 2:07 PM
  9. I graduated in 2012 from tcu for undergrad in speech-path, and I wish i was still there everyday! I loved it. Yes i believe some girls had an externship in Dallas at the Children's Medical Center. There are several hospitals in fort worth as well as in Dallas so there are a lot of hospital settings just in the area. Right now, I actually live right around the corner from UTD's campus and there are at least 3 hospitals in this area alone, so I am sure that UTD has close ties with the hospitals around its campus for externships as well.
  10. slplivin- I went to TCU undergrad. so I know some things about the program to an extent. any specific questions that i might be able to answer? the program is small and the 14/6 monolingual/bilingual sounds about right. I'm pretty sure that their waitlist is ranked so if someone declines offer, they take people off the waitlist by order.
  11. just got an e-mail from stephen f. austin... didn't make it in. this is my first texas school to hear back from thus far.
  12. FYI, when i applied 2 years ago (applying again this round) i got a rejection from UTD in the middle of May. it was a long waiting period. I feel like all the other letters I got 2 yrs ago were before April. this time around i applied to a whole different pool of texas schools (i had out of my league expectations last time, now i have learned better!) + out of state programs. so far haven't heard from anyone
  13. I applied to UTD, SFA, UTD and Abilene Christian... haven't heard anything yet... I will keep up with this post!
  14. denied also right After posting on here this morning. Yes, you have to have your bachelors degree to get your SLPA license or be done with your leveling courses. Is anyone else applying to any other programs in Texas for the fall? Trying not to get completely discouraged by this one denial but I would be lying if I said I wasn't disappointed!
  15. I will be nervously checking my email all day!!! Sorry to the ones that did not get accepted... I am an SLPA also and this will be my second round of applying to grad school.. This is the first program I have applied to for this time around. I am planning on applying to other programs but wish I just knew already for this one so I know what next steps to take for other schools applications. Good luck to us still waiting!
