Statement of Purpose hooks, help please!
MonicaSLP replied to Liza_Ann_92's topic in Speech-Language Pathology Forum
Mimblewimble's advice is good. There is a way to work in you interest in language as well as your personal experience with SLP, but I don't think the language thing alone is strong hook, and the personal experience is fairly cliché as your main point. The last name thing is too cutesy to include at all, IMO. Start making bullet points of ALL the reasons that this is your choice, even fleeting moments that you haven’t thought of in a while. One of those is likely what sets YOU apart. You can expand on one of those as your overriding theme and work in the others as appropriate. Also, a general tip that I used as I was writing. I have a friend who is a career coach and she always says "it's not bragging if it's true". I was afraid to mention certain things, but as long as they're stated as fact rather than in a smug kind of way, it belongs in there. This is your chance to sell yourself. If you don't tell them why you are right for their program, no one else will, including your grades and GREs. -
I thought correlation could only be between 2 quantitative factors, not categorical. But I'm kind of struggling with this stupid statistics class, so what do I know?

Anyone else, especially if you've already made a decision, feel way too distracted to concentrate this semester? I am relieved to have a plan for next year, but now I have no interest in studying for this week's midterms. I'm not even a senior, just a returning student taking my pre-reqs online. I want to be outside in the slightly-warming-up weather, and not stressing out for a change. I have 2 midterms tomorrow and cannot for the life of me focus AT. ALL.

Fall 2015 Applicants!
MonicaSLP replied to slpslidingaway's topic in Speech-Language Pathology Forum
JMUers - I didn't hear anything today! I do think I might have had a CSDCAS glitch, but I'm wondering if my whole thing was lost. Where on the website did you see the decision? Wondering if I keep waiting or call and see if they even ever got my stuff. -
I'm currently taking it at USU. He's a good instructor.

USU will waive the prereqs. Anatomy of the ear was not needed to do well. There may be a few things you would have to look up if you haven't taken it first, but I found it really easy.

Fall 2015 Applicants!
MonicaSLP replied to slpslidingaway's topic in Speech-Language Pathology Forum
Ah, you're right. It also says: "MyMadison will be unavailable during periods of time between March 9th, 5pm and March 10th, 12:30am". -
Fall 2015 Applicants!
MonicaSLP replied to slpslidingaway's topic in Speech-Language Pathology Forum
I can't log in! I enter my ID, then password, then it asks me a security question and it gives me an error message each time. -
I also found Kaplan VERY helpful. You need to put in the work on your own time in addition to the class, but their online resources are great and really help you focus on your specific areas that need help. Even with math concepts that still confused me, I was able to make very educated guesses when necessary.

Ditto library. Maybe a local college has a room in the library for you to use. Or use a friends house. Or someone's office (friend, family, SLP connection in private practice...), which will likely have a better connection.

2015 SLP Admissions Thread
MonicaSLP replied to bindlestiff's topic in Speech-Language Pathology Forum
I only so far heard from UMD, and got in. My plan is to go, but they have asked for no deposit or anything from me yet, so I haven't withdrawn any other applications - I need to officially sign off on something! Looks like Towson, JMU, and Gallaudet don't come out until the first 2 weeks of March. -
Fall 2015 Applicants!
MonicaSLP replied to slpslidingaway's topic in Speech-Language Pathology Forum
I did, but will withdraw my application. Only thing I heard was from CSDCAS saying I was missing a transcript (I took one summer class 18 years ago at a community college and totally forgot about it ). I already got into my preferred school so I'm not wasting my time on dealing with it. Doing an online program is really tempting though! -
Will someone puhl-EASE explain to me this horrible, horrible system??? Does anyone actually like it?? I was frustrated with it during the application process, but they are still haunting me and telling me they didn't receive things, long after the deadline. I have spent more time and money on that thing than I care to calculate. I had never even heard of it before January, and only one of my schools was on there. Are there ANY advantages to it? (rant over - I should be studying....)
-
Thanks all. My school has not yet taken a deposit, so I'm not messing with any of the other applications until I have signed off on this in a more permanent way than just clicking "I plan to attend"! And I haven't heard from any of the other schools yet anyway, so it's not yet messing with anyone else's status. I was waitlisted last year, so I know better than to make anyone suffer I found the handbook - thanks for that suggestion - but it doesn't give me ideas of dates. I just find it odd that the school hasn't gotten back to me - I know it's the right contact person, and they have previously been very good about answering my questions. Just another edition of the waiting game, I guess. Not the worst problem to have, but annoying.
-
So what happens after you get into the school you want and accept their offer? I want all the information ASAP - I'm impatient! When do classes start? Is there an orientation I need to attend? What will my class schedule be like? I'm juggling family vacation schedule with summer class schedule with my kids' daycare schedules. How soon after an acceptance do you actually get the rest of the information to start planning out the rest of my life (or next 2 years)? I've emailed the department twice now with no response, not even "we'll let you know in April" or something similar. Any idea what happens now?
-
I'm also a 2nd time applicant now. I got rejected from my first choice last year took the classes, got A's and got in this year. Taking the classes on my own was actually cheaper -I took them at USU online - cheap and flexible hours (I'm also a returning student with a family, so it ended up working out better this way). If you don't get in, take the classes and kick some major butt to show them you can do it.
-
Thanks - I was hoping they would go by the prefix/department that offered the class. Nutrition was in the chemestry dept, and another class was in sociology. If those are acceptable, then I just have bio, which I guess isn't so bad.
-
Ack! Thanks for the link - figured that it specifies and "generally not accepted" nutrition and geology, which were 2 I was really hoping would cover it. Guess I won't really know til I hear back from the school. I graduated 14 years ago, and am very grouchy about how those course decisions are now going to destroy my summer! I found an awesome place to volunteer at, and was hoping to have a little time to do that instead.
-
I didn't take much science in undergrad, but did take a few, and am trying to figure out what I need to take of the ASHA requirements now. I'm taking statistics this semester. I have an email out to the program I'm attending regarding the others but haven't heard back yet. How do you know which of the others you need to take? Do you have to take them before starting the grad program or just before graduating? I'd REALLY rather not take 3 science classes this summer in addition to the one last comm-d one I have left.

I got waitlisted/rejected first time around from the only school I applied to - GRE V160, Q154, 4.5. GPA 3.34. Returning student. I took all the prereqs at USU, brought my GPA up to 3.41 by getting all As. And got into the first choice school this time, just by getting those As - nothing else changed. Only heard from the one school so far, but it's the most competative of the ones I applied to.

Online Prerequisites (not a full postbacc)
MonicaSLP replied to slpPLS's topic in Speech-Language Pathology Forum
I'm also doing Utah State online. Been doing it part time since last May, and I'll have everything I need by the time Fall is here. I have been very happy with the classes, and did get accepted to my first choice school (I was worried about them not taking USU seriously, but apparently they're used to accepting their credits) -
Has anyone taken the SLP pre-reqs for University of Maryland at Utah State online? I'm trying to figure out which courses are the equivalents of each other. I will of course run them past UMD first, but would love to know if anyone has tips on which to look into, since some don’t seem like obvious matches!

Who is Out-of-field and did not get accepted?
MonicaSLP replied to nata25's topic in Speech-Language Pathology Forum
I have a BA in an unrelated field and more than a dozen years of work experience in that field. I only applied to one school since it had the 3 year program and was by far my first choice (with the plan of if I didn't get in to take the prereqs and reapply everywhere next year). I got waitlisted, and still waiting to hear the final outcome. It was a VERY competative school, so I'm disappointed but not shocked. No idea if being out of field has helped or hurt the application though. My gpa is on the lower side, so I think that my years of work experience and recomendations might have made up for it a bit.
