So I'm already in a masters...but I plan to move on to a PhD after I finish. I've heard that schools still look at GRE scores even if you have a masters, and then others have told me they won't even look at them. So I'm wonder...how much do they matter after a masters?? If I graduate with a 4.0 and a great quantitative MA thesis, could a low GRE still keep me out of the running? I was told by undergraduate professors that an MA is often a way to prove your worth beyond crappy GRE scores.

You know, I think you should just try it and see how you like it., You've got nothing to lose. It'll be a good experience for you and you may find it works out just fine. While everything discussed here is valid, it's also a lot to swallow when considering a relationship. If the relationship is good and healthy right now, there's no reason to end it. If the distance becomes difficult, go ahead and cut things off. Until then, whats the worry? If it doesn't work out, it's not a wasted effort. Dont over-complicate what youve got. If youre bored of waiting, or bored with her to begin with....well maybe its time to be single?

its the southern sociological society's conference. I'm suppose to present a paper on the production of social reality through film there. I'm not 100% sure it's happening yet though.

Nope, I think it's so far fetched it sounds a bit like paranoid schizophrenia. Why would professors in PhD programs keep tabs on message boards?? They have an application process. Thats what they look at. And their grad students don't make a living by stalking potential students on a forum. I mean...really?! Who's doing this??!

"Region" Studies = Interdisciplinary Studies?
Roll Right replied to Lauren the Librarian's topic in Interdisciplinary Studies
I wouldn't argue that regional studies are interdisciplinary studies. I think that the board is just organizing things as they see fit. -
The ASA annual meeting is in Atlanta this summer. Also, the SSSC is in Atlanta in...April I believe.

What are you reading right now? For fun or for school...but whatever you find yourself enjoying.

Yeah its funny, no one sees to be applying to smaller or less prestigious grad schools on this forum. Interesting...

Recession Increases Interest in Law, Grad School
Roll Right replied to rising_star's topic in The Lobby
Oh come on now, the world ends in 2012 anyway, so we dont have to worry. Itll end at the hands of zombies, naturally. -
LOL, wait until you begin grad school. Itll beat the passion out of you with a metal bat and destroy what life you previously enjoyed. But its a great time!

1. I think Penn State is a big demography/quant program. Thats a great school. (University Park) Also, I think Stanford has a good program in Stratification, which is obviously a quantitative sub-field. Oh and Minnesota I think. 2. Not sure. 3. Analysts for corporations like RTI (Research Triangle Institute). 4. It wont really matter what courses you take, PhD programs like you to take THEIR stats, their theory..all that. So if you've demonstrated your academic abilities (which it sees you have), you ought to be in the running for funding. Most programs give full funding to everyone. Thats something you'll need to look into. Programs with competitive funding typically have a lot of politics involved....

I dont work right now...just doing full time in an MA.

Honestly this MA thesis is small potatoes. I'm in the same boat. Luckily my profs enjoy my idea, but disagree with my methods. If it was a Phd I'd say go for it, it's your work that will get published. But in an MA you need to work on a thesis that faculty will get on board with, or you can kiss LORs goodbye. It's better to play politics here than to go it alone. Especially if you want a PhD.

help.. my advisor makes me want to die
Roll Right replied to leslt39's topic in Coursework, Advising, and Exams
Yeah, I had an academic advisor like this in my undergrad. He often told me I was a shitty writer and that i tried to sound smarter than I actually was. Funny, my thesis advisor loved my writing. I remember my academic advisor told a fellow student that she was too dumb to go to grad school, as her papers weren't intellectual enough. Shes brilliant IMO. In short: it's their problem, not yours. Don't take on the weight of their own pain...or whatever is causing the ridiculous behavior. -
Does anyone play Steam games in their free time?

Im not entirely sure why everyone worries about the GRE so much. It depends on the school youre applying to. Some are informally waiving the GRE requirement (asking for the test but putting little to no weight on it). Dont worry about your score. Its fine. And multiple retakes can smack of desperation.

Heres what I think: 1. Social science degrees are not monetarily worth it at the graduate level if youre not funded. I wasnt funded this year, so Ill be $50,000 in debt for student loans (including my undergrad). But I never do anything just for the money. If its TRULY what youre passionate about, by all means go for the higher degree. 2. That debt is gunna capitalize, and turn into $500,000 real quick even if you defer. Especially the private loans. Youll have to work while you go to grad school. 3. At this point, who the hell cares? Youre so far into debt you might as well get a higher degree. I dont know anyone who is debt free after college. Do what you want and dont let imaginary numbers determine how you live your life.
