Recommender from Different Department

Any recommendation is useful, one from a department outside of your primary interest shows that you are a more rounded applicant and can be to your benefit. -
How to stay safe in a college town?
avflinsch replied to virtua's topic in IHOG: International House of Grads
I really don't want this thread to turn into a gun debate -- There are 50 states, and probably 50+ different sets of rules about carrying firearms. Laws vary state to state and even within counties/cities. The only places I have seen folks openly carrying firearms have been in Montana (where you are more likely to be attacked by a bear, than a random person) and Arizona. My personal opinion, the folks that are legally and openly carrying, are not the ones that you need to worry about, it is the folks that are intent on doing harm that are the ones to worry about (criminals don't obey laws, sort of the definition of criminal). My school has some good tips published by the university PD, pretty basic, but should work about anywhere http://rupd.rutgers.edu/crimetips.php and http://ruoffcampus.rutgers.edu/safety-security/ See if your school has a email alert list about area crimes, this way you can see what is going on, and you will learn to know what areas to avoid. -

My situation is a bit different, I took loans for the first 2 years of undergrad, and then dropped out. I kept taking courses afterwards to reset the clock on repayments - the rules have since changed and the clock does not reset every time you enroll. I ended up paying back loans while I was no longer going to school, and eventually finished my undergrad (using employee benefits) 30+ years later. I am now in a grad program (still using employee benefits), so my education financial responsibilities are minimal. Instead of trying to ay back the loans while in grad school and on a limited income, I would set up an account and place any spare funds into it while in school. Once you start on a professional or academic career, you will have a cash reserve and can start paying the loan from that. I would setup auto transfers into and out of the reserve account.

Current salary - may make a difference in any funding you may get, having less money may make for a greater amount/percentage of funding. Work number - they are looking for as many ways to contact you as possible, no harm in giving it to them, unless you cannot receive calls at your workplace. Neither of these questions should have any impact on their decision.

It was probably listed as a transfer course on one of the transcripts that you did send. -

That video covers it exactly. The next things to vanish from the shelves are chips & beer. .

Car - No less than 1/2 tank of gas at anytime Keep a blanket, flashlight, spare gloves, change of clothes, small folding shovel & a jug of washer fluid in your trunk 4WD / AWD may help you get going - it does absolutely nothing to help you stop if you start sliding. Remember that - it can save your (or someone elses) life. A portable jumpstart box is easier to store than a set of jumper cables. It is also useful for other things, and does not require a second car for a jump when needed. Clothes - I prefer a light fleece worn under a heavier insulated car length coat, layers are better than bulk. Good boots, insulated leather and keep them treated with your preferred waterproofing (I like old fashioned mink oil). A set of springy ice creepers is good to have also. 2 pair of socks, one thin (to wick away moisture), one heavy for insulation. Good gloves, but make sure that they are flexible Food - Stock up well in advance, for some strange reason, as soon as snow is predicted everyone runs out to get bread, milk and eggs. I guess everyone plans on having french toast for the next two weeks. Keep a bunch of canned goods around at all times, when the weather gets nasty the store shelves empty out quickly. Keep a day's worth of food in your campus office if you have one. Safety & Sanity - Get one of those battery extenders and a car charger for your phone. Some places in the northeast have extended power outages. Never underestimate the usefulness of a deck or two of playing cards, a set of dice, some paper and a pencil. If the weather sucks - stay home. Don't go out unless you absolutely need to. THINK - you may be an excellent driver, but that means that everyone else is worse than you, so the best way to keep yourself safe is to stay off of the roads. Portable radio, with batteries. You may think that you can stream radio via some phone app, but the local stations may not be streaming if they are on emergency power.

Go for it! You are never too old, I didn't even finish my BA until I was 52, and am starting to consider a second masters (after I finish this one) or possibly pursuing a phd.

What aspect of graduate student life surprised you the most?
avflinsch replied to inkgraduate's topic in Officially Grads
#1 - Free food is available just about every day, you just need to know whee to look. #2 - The department secretary is the absolute most important person in the university - they can get anything done for you. #3 - Every major project/paper in all of your classes are guaranteed to be due on the same day #4 - Email, email, email & more email. As a followup to #2 - an occasional box of donuts/candy or bag of bagels dropped off in the department office goes a long way towards getting special attention towards stuff you need done. -
