Work fulltime for the university I attend - free tuition for me and my kids, and the only way I could afford to go back to school Make my own beer/wine - saves a considerable amount of cash ($15-20 in ingredients = 2+ cases of beer, $30 in ingredients = 2 cases of wine) Grow a considerable percentage of my own veggies, the rest get purchased at a local pick-your-own farm. Take advantage of everything your public library has to offer for free/cheap entertainment Attend every free event where food is available. Make bulk purchases for canned/dried/frozen foods at the local warehouse type place - the membership fee will pay for itself over time. Big freezer in the basement to store frozen foods.

What are your 4 dream jobs? Are you qualified for any of them?
avflinsch replied to Authorization's topic in Jobs
Even with the MRS, nobody starts out as being qualified - it is entirely On The Job training. -
Online courses to fulfill prerequisites
avflinsch replied to StarkResilient89's topic in Government Affairs Forum
Try Rutgers - no online stats over the summer, but there are a few Microeconomics sessions offered online thru the Camden campus, and it is not too late to register for them. http://sis.rutgers.edu/soc/ -

First Year Students Fall 2014 How's It Going
avflinsch replied to Threeboysmom's topic in Officially Grads
This is Just Crazy -- I am registered for a class in data visualization for the fall, with a great professor - I had him for an undergrad class several years ago, and have a pretty good idea of what to expect. I got a notification from my employer late last week - I am scheduled to take a 1 week training crash course in - (take a guess) data visualization. Great, it will give me a head start in September. I have had this happen before while an undergrad, professional training in a subject before taking an academic course in the same or similar area. Get another email today, from the company providing the training which includes the instructors name and contact info – same person who is teaching the class in the fall (different email address though). Now for the real kicker – my full time employer is the same as the university that I am attending part time (tangentially related field). Doesn’t anyone talk to anyone here? -
This is a big one with me also, I usually avoid the chains unless there is nothing else available. The only thing good about them is that they are consistently mediocre.

Library Science as a Second Masters
avflinsch replied to WriteAndKnit's topic in Library Sciences Forum
I think about 1/4 of my cohort already has a masters or a phd in another discipline, and is going for the MLIS as an extra edge in getting a better (or keeping a current) position. -

What does it mean when a professor says these
avflinsch replied to 2015undergrad's topic in Research
I think it means exactly what he said - He has a current project, and is not looking for new project right now. He is willing to pay you. There is enough work for more than one person. Take the offer, take the cash. If he didn't feel comfortable with you, he would not have offered anything. -
I lived in Waltham many years ago (1989 - 1991) - it was a fairly easy commute into Boston, drive, commuter rail or express bus from downtown, short drive to the Riverside or Alewife T stations. No kids then, so I can't comment on the school situation, but overall, it was a good place. We were renting the bottom floor of a two family on Woburn St near the Lexington border.
