    CGS-M 2015-2016

Exactly, that's why I'm doubtful that A- and A+ are weighed the same. Anyone reading this and feel worried about gpa of last 20 credits: apply anyways because you're not going to lose anything from trying... Good luck everyone! 2 more days, not counting dec 1st. Hope all your references come in soon ><

    CGS-M 2015-2016

What jasminetea said, but I was also told by my undergrad thesis supervisors that people with A- rarely win CGS-M ... possible, but rare (or at least in my field). So to be truly competitive, you should have an A at least. But I also went to this SSHRC workshop a few months ago and the faculty member leading it was very encouraging, in that the chance of winning with an A- is just as likely with an A+. But she also said we shouldn't have to work on the proposal for more than one night/2 hours specifically ... wish I was as ingenious as her haha. She was in arts and contemporary, so maybe dependent on what field you are in as well? Anyway, even if you're not competitive, you should definitely do one anyways because it'll make your application look better, and the experience will be worthwhile for future funding proposals!! ... I'm echoing what my supervisors said to me. Don't use jargon -- if you introduce a term specific to your field, be sure to define it. Make sure every sentence means something and builds on the other. No fluff. Make it sound as exciting and important as possible, from beginning to end so that it doesn't bore the reader. Only use citations that are important - quality over quantity for citations! Good luck everyone!! 3 more days!

    CGS-M 2015-2016

Good luck qeta!! I hope you can find someone to give you feedback. I'd offer to, but I'm not even in yet so I don't know how helpful I would be.

    CGS-M 2015-2016

Hi everyone, I hope there isn't a thread on this already... sorry if I did miss it >.o. Anyone else applying to CGS-M? I'm going to keep proofreading until the deadline. My topic is under CIHR, which makes me worried that my chances are even lower because the allocation of CIHR is supeeeer low in comparison to NSERC and SSHRC ; _ ; ... but since it's the only thing that I can think of, I'm just gonna hope for the best.
  6. I did this kinda, and unintentionally. I went to this convention in May and briefly talked to a girl about her award-winning poster. She's a MA student now, and sat in the interview I had today. She recognized me haha, so this probably makes me a bit more memorable xD. I'm also going to try to attend the APA convention see you guys there (maybe).
  7. Thanks for all the input. My supervisor said the same thing (@Crucial BBQ). She told me that I shouldn't take it personally if I do get rejected -- in that I'm not a bad student. If I do get rejected, it's most likely because the timing/circumstances are not aligned. So contacting beforehand is a good strategy because you at least retain some control.
  8. Thanks for sharing your exp! In regards to your first point, I'm hoping that there might be a professor with similar interests, but an outdated website/blurb of their interests online and that's why I didn't notice him/her. I talked to a grad student about this and she thinks that it might be possible, but we're both obviously skeptical haha. But yeah, I won't accept the offer if it turns out no profs have similar interests. Second point: Thanks for your advice. I think I will contact those with marginally similar interests. Unfortunately, the prof I talked to didn't suggest any names, and when I suggested some, he gave me stories and reasons for why person A and B are not good, etc, etc... I think I'll email them anyways tomorrow.
  9. To people who are in grad school, or were, or applying ,whatever haha... did you contact your current supervisor before applying? And did you only get acceptances from schools where you contacted people prior to applying? I'm wondering because a few months back, I contacted this prof at UofT, the only one with common research interests, about graduate supervision. At first things seemed ok, but when we met again he said he might retire in 3 years so unless I get joint supervision, he probably won't take me in. I don't want joint supervision (not so good exp w undergrad thesis), and I already paid my application, so I'm going to apply anyways. But I seriously cannot find another prof who shares research interests. The prof I contacted did say that if my application does get passed on to the faculty, someone else may find me interesting and take me in... but I would feel more confident if I had contacted someone, you know? Any thoughts, opinions, etc would be appreciated~ thanks all!
  10. I had one pre-application meeting back in September. I also emailed my CV and transcript when I first contacted him. The prof asked typical questions like tell me about yourself, what skills can you bring to the lab, etc... in return I also asked about the program and what not. I volunteer in his lab now, which is good because the things I'm doing really align with my interests, but after having more conversations with him and the lab, I don't think I'll apply under his supervision because he might retire and I don't want joint supervision, which he suggested is possible... So yeah, use it to your advantage -- definitely not a waste of time! I have another meeting on Monday... so good luck to both of us ><
  11. In case my scores can help ease anyone's worries...: My real scores: V158, Q152, AW not released yet, but it should be okay. My practice scores with Manhatten were between 156 to 160 for V, and consistent 148's for Q... I was really happy when I got 152 on the real thing, even if it's not that great haha. I also used powerprep and got 154 for V and 151 for Q both times. Good luck to people who are taking their GREs soon >_< !
  12. Canadian here~ UfT, York, and Laurier for experimental psych.
