  1. Thanks ToldAgain for a rational response, although I do not consider myself an applicant, I am an accepted student into a top 30 PhD program with years of funding, which I think is a little different. I didn't realize I was asking a forbidden question. If anyone would be interested in actually reading my question, they will see it was not disparaging, argumentative, or demeaning. It only reflected my perplexity. To be labelled a "troll" or "argumentative" is a bit uncalled for. I really had never heard about "Rhet/Comp" before. This reminds me a little bit of the "question" of whether it is "Spanish" or "Castellano" which, according to the DRAE, are interchangeable terms. But not to everyone!
  2. It was an honest question, not a troll. I'm really afraid the internet is going to trivialize discourse.
  3. So excuse my ignorance, but when did Comp Rhet become a mainstream academic path? Has it always been around? I always thought it was the English Department. The very terms seem so out of place in the 21st century of anthropology, psychology, and linguistics. Composition and Rhetoric seem so 19th century in the same way as Grammar and Dictionaries are.
  4. I might be totally missing the point, but what does going overseas have to do with "making or breaking" an application? Seems to me it can only strengthen it, especially as you have a French major also, albeit I do not know anything about Comp Rhet programs. Are you abandoning your French going forward in grad school?
  5. Hi PPear, I would recommend that you briefly name 2-3 professors max, and why. Especially if you have talked to them already. Anything to personalize and pinpoint your interests is good, IMHO.
  6. I got some denials, some of which stung a bit, but I can't imagine what it would be like to get shut out. Ouch! That would be devastating! No way can anyone on a web board make that better! Sorry to hear that has happened. One of my grad cafe "buddies" looks like a shut out too (for Spanish). I am a much older student and I worked a lot on my apps. I feel like I could be a grad school coach of sorts, but I'm probably just deluding myself. EDIT: forgot to mention. I lived in Iowa for a few years. When you say Iowa, are you talking about the U of Iowa? Doesn't really matter, my only advice, "snow pants"
  7. Yeah, really quiet. It was really hard to turn down acceptances. You never really know what is "best". Hope everyone gets where they need to go.
  8. My acceptance schools emailed me like clock-work on the 15th. Kind of startling after so much silence.
  9. I'm not in Philosophy, but I had to call the University of Arizona (if that is what you mean by 'Arizona') recently out of impatience and then had to email the DGS who finally told me I had been denied an MA admit. No biggie, I already have PhD admit to a much more highly ranked school. Funny way to finish my app season.
  10. It depends on several factors. First of all, do you have STEM courses in your bachelor's? Will you have LORs from STEM professors? Can you take the requisite classes between now and app time? Generally, engineering departments sometimes (you can check with each department) can admit you and lay remedial coursework on you. So, it can be done, it isn't black and white. Just know I have an engineering background, so it is possible to change fields.
  11. Natiyrm, Congratulations! Yes, I remember you, the only person hereabouts from China. Good for you!!
  12. If the OP is applying for Fall 2015 it would seem the die is cast and we have crossed the Rubicon. Or am I missing something? I don't know if you can do this, but in my case I went back to undergrad and took two years of courses leading to a certification, not just a single course. I got all four of my recommenders during that process.
  13. Thanks to everyone on this most positive of all the 2015 threads!
  14. I'm a non-traditional student so I applied all over the map; both MA Spanish, MA LAS and PhD Spanish. Most of my apps were for Spanish, just a couple LAS. I got a really good Spanish PhD admit so that is my priority right now. But UNM really treated me well, I really respect those departments.
  15. I'm mainly interested in the Spanish language, especially in contact with indigenous languages. I have a personal connection to indigenous groups in Mexico. Academically, I have little track record. What aspects of Pre-columbian/colonial Mexico are you interested in?
  16. I am one of the admits to UNM Latin American Studies.
  17. I just heard my last decision - a denial to a MA program. No matter what or how they happen, or who they are from, those denials always hurt. I finally had to email the graduate adviser to find out. And it was a denial from a fairly low ranked big state school. The difference between schools and departments is palpable. I got a PhD acceptance from a well ranked school including TAship. If all you get are denials, I feel for you, that would feel horrible. Juuust keep going!

Don't take it personally- they very well may have known you were overqualified and a better fit elsewhere. Their decision enabled you to be more secure in yours elsewhere, and allowed a spot for someone who maybe couldn't get into as good of schools. Best wishes!!! Now you can "relax"(if that's even possible) because the results are all in. :)

  18. Don't know if anyone answered this, but it is common that the departments evaluate candidates and when decisions have been made they forward the package to the graduate school who makes a final check before posting results. It sounds like the decision has been made. You are close to hearing.
  19. I just called a couple of programs. They didn't mind at all. Of course, that was the only time I called in the last three months so I didn't feel like I was pestering them. I got into a couple more MA programs, one has good funding with TA.
  20. You didn't check the website for a month!!??!! I was checking like every 10 minutes. Anyway, congratulations!
  21. BBear, bummer! Here's hoping for better news.
  22. Hi Katla, It's nice to see more people hereabouts. I only applied to one Comp. Lit. program which rejected me and wasn't one of your schools. I know at least a couple of your schools have been mentioned here so maybe someone can offer some information.
