STATS STATS STATS! This is the one thing I wish I had brushed up on before I started my M.A. program. The more you get before starting the program, the better (and easier) your life will be, prob. for several years! See if you can sit in a grad psych class, or get a basic and a multivariate books.
-
I've heard of it happening, but I'm sure it varies widely based on your field. But I can't imagine it would hurt to ask (the grad coordinator at least wouldn't care, I'm sure) Good luck!

Have you contacted the department to see if an extension is available?

This sounds really silly, but I've found I do a lot better (read: less awkwardly) in phone interviews/important calls when I'm making myself act as if the person was in front of me. When you interview face-to-face, you make yourself have good posture, you smile, all those little things that make sense when you're trying to impress someone. All those things can influence your voice as well though--I've found that if I'm wearing something nice (not a suit, just not pjs), am sitting or standing straight, and smile while talking, I do so much better and am less likely to be nervous, because I feel prepared and professional. I've also stood/sat in front of a mirror to make myself aware of how I look--it sounds vain but I am always peppy-er (peppier?), more focused on the convo instead of what to say next, and sound more professional if I see myself nodding, smiling, etc. This also may be because I hate talking on the phone, or because I'm completely neurotic, but hey, it's worked so far!

Advice for turning down an interview request.
LaurenA replied to bgav's topic in Interviews and Visits
I agree with the previous posters--I can't imagine turning down an interview BUT still wanting to be considered as anything but a very bad plan. Can you fly red-eye, ask the dept to leave a little early/come a little late, anything so you don't miss so much class? -

That was me! It was actually weird--my potential advisor called me without warning and invited me to the interview weekend, not sure if more are getting called... -
Is this for a particular subfield? Because I just got a call for an invite for the Dev. weekend
-
Not me (sorry!) but I did see that UCLA posted their recruitment weekends for each department here...
-
You just made a good friend of mine very happy--she applied to Cornell's Social and was worried about the Cornell post I know Clinical is almost always separate, but I've also heard that faculty contacts are generally by subfield, then they make their recommendations to the whole department.

I'm in a psych M.A. program, got a B last semester, and was worried about the same thing. From what I can tell grades matter but what really matters is your work. My B actually came up in a phone interview with a PhD program this week, but the faculty member was pretty casual about it, just mentioning that I should probably audit that course if I get in there, but that my research experience is way more important. I'm not sure how it is in the humanities though. I would ask your advisor...but what can you really do about it now?
-
Is anyone else incredibly annoyed when people post on the results page without stating their subfield, e.g., Clinical, Health, I/O...?

Additional letter to Admissions Committee?
LaurenA replied to anthgraduate's topic in Waiting it Out
I guess it would depend on how big of a difference adding that to your application would be--if something huge happened to me after sending in my applications, I would probably send in an updated CV with a cover letter. -

Any chance anyone on here is the person who just posted an interview email from USouthernCal for Dev. Psych? I'm interested to see who the faculty member is...mostly to drive myself nuts if it's one of the people I'm interested in -
Personally, I'd ask someone else--I had a program with a Jan 2 deadline that asked me for a phone interview on the 9th, and it seemed like if my app hadn't been complete (as in *everything*), they would haven't talked to me. That program is also making acceptance decisions next week (!). It probably depends on the program--I have some that were due Dec 1 that haven't started reviewing yet. Maybe contact the grad admissions coordinator? Sometimes they can be helpful and let you know what's up--I've emailed in the past and asked about something like that, I've found that when I'm really polite they'll give me some insider info (either "don't worry about that missing piece, they actually don't start reviewing until X" or "between you and me, your app can't be reviewed until we get that piece, and they're reviewing next week", etc.) I had this happen to me a few years ago when applying to MA programs--a fourth person was happy to write them, then the third LOR writer (who was late) ended up finishing them, so some schools had four recs.

Scroll to the top of this page and click Results Search, you can search by program, university, etc. -
This made me smile, def. a positive!

I'll bite...mostly because I desperately need a pick-me-up Reasons programs should want me: -published--first author on one! multiple papers in prep/review -LORs--all my writers said they wrote glowing letters (and I have no reason to think they're lying!) -massive amounts of experience after undergrad--full-time RA position, then M.A. program ranked #2 of its kind -highly rated teaching experience -received several research grants -presented my research both in poster and in talk form I *really* think this thread could help people prep for interviews--it's so hard to brag on yourself! EDIT: Wow, that was difficult, and I'm first, ahhh! But I feel better

Cmon, there's got to be another dev. psych applicant here! This makes me worried about the Results thread....I was planning on using that to see when committees were contacting people! -
I'm in the experimental psych program at The College of William & Mary, which is funded by our half-time teaching assistantships. It's enough to live on, and almost what I made full-time as an RA. I believe Wake Forest is funded as well. Oh, our tuition is taken care of as well I can't say much about funding for foreign students, but we do have a first-year from eastern Europe who had no problem.
-
Another option if you're still not sure what you're really interested in is to apply to an experimental M.A. program first. That's what I did/am doing, and thank goodness I did! Within three months I was able to find my true interests and got a ton of experience, which I'm hoping wipes out my mediocre B.A. GPA and research experience and propels me over B.A./B.S.'s applying this term. Ever since starting this M.A. program, I've been a huge advocate for this route (IF you aren't nailed down to a particular set of interests, want experience, etc.) Edit: M.A.'s are also great back-ups...I thought I was a gung-ho (sp?) clinical applicant a few years ago and applied to M.A.s as back-up, didn't get in to PhDs and LOVE my current program

Dev Psych here! Good to see another kid researcher Nervously awaiting the next two weeks...a few of my programs have contacted people for interviews in the first full week of January, eek! -
I'd also love to hear about these experiences, esp. from ppl who became new parents in a science/research-related field. I've heard from faculty that they best time to have kids is in the latter part of your PhD program (i.e., open schedule, can work from home, etc.), but the thought of being pregnant and therefore having to kick my caffeine habit while writing my dissertation....egh
