  1. Haha, is that where you're going Sparky? That is where I went to undergrad. I absolutely love Nancy Warren, she helped me through this entire process, she is my mentor and role model. I can't say enough nice things about her. I'm sure that is what I'm going to do now. Thanks so much everyone for your input , I really appreciate it!
  2. See that's the thing, the other two places I was accepted were masters programs, but they were funded. I just don't know if doing an unfunded masters is such a hot idea. Le sigh, decisions. Thank you so much paper chaser, and everyone else for the feedback though, greatly appreciated!
  3. So, naturally I assumed that I did not get into the University of Chicago, and I was partially right. I did not get into their PhD program, but I did get into their terminal masters program...unfunded. It would be a bad idea to do this right? I got into 2 other funded masters programs, FSU and Kansas. Obviously, they are nowhere near as prestigious as U. Chicago but is it worth the extremely large sum of money I will have to pay to attend? I'm kind of thinking that if I was able to get an acceptance from a school this good my first time around that after I get my Masters, pick up another language and improve my GRE score I bit that I could make it into a pretty good PhD program next time around...with funding. But then I wonder if getting my masters at Chicago would perhaps improve my chances of getting into their PhD program, making it worth the expense. I don't know. I really have no idea what I'm talking about though...I need advice. Help!
  4. Oh, I understand. I come from a conservative Jewish family. You can imagine the reaction when I said that I wasn't going to attend law school and that I was planning to get a PhD in medieval literature. I might as well have told them that I was getting a sex change operation and planned to pursue full-time prostitution in order to support my heroin addiction. My parents have come around and realized that it will be okay because they can still tell their friends I am a doctor (though I have a sneaking suspicion they will omit exactly what kind of doctor...) but the rest of my family constantly jokes about it. They are all very successful lawyers, doctors, and high powered buisness executives. They cannot understand why I would go to such lengths to get a degree that would not result in a fat pay check. In fact, my cousin was in town this past weekend and "jokingly" asked if I could translate a Newsweek article into Old English. Jerk. Also, because most of my family is extremely wealthy I am constantly asked how I plan to live off of a professor's salary and if my plan is to marry rich. It is sad, they cannot seem to understand that happiness is far more important than material wealth. Oh, and as far as friends go, I think I get asked by virtually everyone who I discuss my career plans with if I intend to work at Renn. fest. This pisses me off more than anything, DON'T THEY REALIZE THAT THE RENNAISANCE AND THE MIDDLE AGES ARE TWO DIFFERENT PERIODS? omg. ok. I'll calm down now. Point it, few people seem to really understand what goes in to this career path. So many people are so ignorant to just what it takes to get a PhD and then to make your way in this field. If only they knew...
  5. Yeah, I emailed to ask and I was told we would know something this week. I highly doubt I will get in, I'm already planning to move back to Tallahassee and get my masters there. Then I'll hopefully be able to reapply for my PhD with a much stronger application. Good luck to all!
  6. Thanks, Lily. That is good to know and congratulations on being wait listed, I know it is weird to think of the wait list that way but at least you have a chance. Good luck! Would you mind sharing your stats so I have an idea of what Iowa is looking for when I reapply? haha, if you don't want to share I totally understand, but I am curious.
  7. So many people are posting email notifications from Iowa, rejects, acceptances and waitlists, and yet I have heard absolutely nothing. I know they have my email. Wtf, Iowa, wtf?
  8. You got a waitlist email? This school seems really odd about notifying, has anyone received an acceptance email? I've heard absolutely nothing, so I guess that is another reject to add to the list. Le sigh, did your status checker change at all?
  9. I'm so sorry to hear that! *ehug* I know how much rejections suck. I have receive MANY this cycle, but keep going, you'll get in somewhere good. I just emailed Bev, I assume I will get the same thing. Would you mind sending me Jennifer Fleissner's email? I may just give that a go.
  10. congrats on your acceptance!

  11. Hey! Yeah, I know it's a track program but I didn't know whether those with MA's already would be notified before those of us who don't have them. But this is all good information to know : ) Thank you!
  12. Does anyone know if any MA applicants have been contacted yet? I'm holding on to the hope that maybe they haven't gotten to us yet...
  13. Thank you! I know I really appreciate any info on the OSU front. Congrats on your acceptance!!
  14. I have been wondering the same thing. It looks like a few are not internal applicants. I'm not sure what's going on, does anyone know if they're done making offers? I am very frightened!
  15. oh no! I'm nervous because I never got that letter! Oh jeez, I shall be calling admissions tomorrow! haha but thank you, this helps a lot. I don't see an ISIS link on the uiowa homepage. Do you think you would mind posting a link to the webpage you see this on? ( I know, I am inept!) That is fabulous! Good luck! I really hope we are in Iowa City together next year, that would be wonderful. Keep me posted!
  16. Iowa's application has a status checker? How do I use this? (sorry, I am SO incompetent with computers!) Also, what is your area of focus? I'm a hopefully Iowa-bound medievalist...hopefully...
  17. can't wait until the waiting game is over. Oye vey!

  18. I desperately want to get into U. Iowa. Their program looks wonderful, I suppose that is what makes all this waiting so difficult. Has anyone heard anything at all? Feb. is almost over and this makes me nervous. I saw an acceptance posted on here a while ago, but there was only one and nobody really mentioned it. Any information would be greatly appreciated. I'm going crazy over here.
  19. Medieval literature, with a focus on gender and sexuality in the Middle Ages and female spirituality in the Middle Ages (the two are strongly linked for those who are not really into the medieval thing! haha)
  20. Hahaha, I've never heard that term before 'academic grandfather', that is great. But he is hilarious, he taught a few of my classes, and I will never forget his reading of heile of bersalah and his impersonations of all the Dutch characters. Amazing, definitely not your average medievalist!
  21. hey, I too am a hopeful future medievalist. I went to FSU for undergrad and worked with Dr. Nancy Warren who is amazing. She is the one who turned me on to medieval literature in the first place. If you have the opportunity to study with her or Dr. Johnson you should definitely take it. There is not much to do in Tallahassee, but the faculty in the English department is wonderful and personable. I really have enjoyed my time there, and again I can't say enough nice things about Dr. Warren. She helped me sooooo much throughout my application process, and I can honestly say that she really changed my life. I know that sounds corny, but it is true. I was hoping to get in somewhere else for my PhD, but I was just accepted for a funded MA at FSU and if I don't get into any PhD, or PhD track programs I will definitely be there studying with her. If you have any questions about FSU that I could possibly answer, message me!
  22. I was thinking the exact same thing. That and the lone U. Illinois at Urbana Champaign acceptance....and that new Kansas acceptance. They all make me wonder. Could someone just be screwing with us? How cruel would that be...
  23. Hey, I'm applying for a PhD in English and my professor that helped me throughout this process suggested that I name professors in my SOP for each school I applied to. She said it makes the applicant appear focused, and as though they really thought about why they want to apply to THAT particular program. I would not worry, I'm sure it will all be fine!
  24. yeah I had a mini heart attack when I read that on my blackberry in traffic this afternoon. Good thing I was at a red light. I'm not so shocked that FSU sent this, I went there for undergrad and the english department is extremely thoughtful. They always keep you in the loop on everything. Good luck to everyone waiting to hear back!
  25. Yeah, I've been wondering about all this stuff as well. My status checker still says "academic review". Curses.
