  1. I can't wait for GASP days. The coordinators have been remarkably organized and that seems to bode well. Anyone else think we should have some kind of code, so we know when we are among gradcafe friends? Pink carnations, tootsie roll pops, copies of Emma. . . the possibilities are endless.
  2. I'm in the same boat. This program looks fantastic, but I will be declining my spot on the waitlist as soon as I am more clear on funding at another (also awesome) school. I hope that means someone here can take my place!
  3. I noticed that there was a grand total of one English PhD acceptance to The University of Iowa among the results and that struck me as a little strange. Do you think the other acceptances have been sent out individually (perhaps via carrier pigeon) or that only one Iowa acceptee is a regular lurker at the grad cafe? I suppose it is possible that the others have found other, less obsessive, hobbies. Thoughts?
  4. Has anyone who was notified via email heard about funding? I called to ask and they didn't seem comfortable discussing things over the phone before I had received my official letter. Of course, I have no idea when said letter may arrive. OSU, on the other hand, was happy to talk. Tis a shame that I like Madison so much more.
  5. I just got the acceptance email for the MA/PhD candidates. It didn't have any funding info, but I'm feeling hopeful. Congrats to the phone call recipients and good luck to everyone who hasn't heard yet! The spot on the website where you can check your status still says "pending" for me, so that doesn't mean much of anything. Oh, and I'm focusing on 19th century Brit lit with an emphasis on narrative theory. Any other Victorians out there?
  6. A couple of my undergrad profs suggested that I take a serious look at Hopkins because they have such a strong placement rate. In this ridiculous field, that really is an overwhelming reason, especially when it happens to be an excellent school. I would like to have a job after all this.
  7. I'm really into those fat Victorian novels (Bleak House, Middlemarch, etc. . ). Throw in some Austen and I'm a happy camper. At OSU, I'm most excited to work with James Phelan. I'm interested in the intersection between formalist theory and cultural studies and he has done some fascinating research in that general area. How about you? Oh, and since this is radically off topic, please let me know if there is a better place to respond. In other news, I love the idea of having a virtual housewarming party. Can there be cupcakes?
  8. One more Victorian! I'm specifically into 19th century novels and narrative theory and that website did seem really friendly. It definitely didn't seem like a place where Victorians would need to fight for support. There's just so much love available.
  9. My unrealistic dream-world first choice is Stanford, for the herd of amazing professors in my subject area. Plus, I have family in Northern California. My slightly more realistic first choice is UW-Madison for one awesome professor. Her work singlehandedly inspired me to apply to grad school, and it would be incredibly sweet to get a personal phone call saying that I made the cut. Until I hear otherwise, that is going to be my professional fantasy.
  10. I just found out that I got in when I saw an earlier post in the results and checked out my status! I am officially into the MA program en route to the PhD. I am new to the forums, so I'm not sure which info to post, but I'll throw up everything that I have. GPA Cumulative: 3.75 GPA Major: 3.8ish GRE: 740/ 690 5.5 (My physics major friend got a 6, and I just about shot him.) Subject GRE: 670 I went to one of those small liberal arts colleges in the midwest, and I could tell you how my statement of purpose, writing sample, and recommendations stack up against other applicants. I'm focused on 19th century Brit. Lit. with an emphasis on Victorian novels and formalist theory. Anything else I should include?
