How did you choose where to apply?
anxiousapplicant replied to Scalia's topic in Political Science Forum
I'm geographically limited for a variety of reasons, so I just chose a radius for the greater metropolitan area I live in, found all the schools within it, and then applied only to those that offered what I wanted. -
The Poor Thinking of the Duke Graduate School

Wow that sucks. I can only imagine how your heart must have been racing first with your hopes and excitement and then with your disappointment. That was incredibly shitty of them to do. I didn't even notice the little link at all. Plus the way it's written about accepting the decision was misleading as well. Who wants to work with poos like that anyway? -

No offense, Oxon, but people who have no acceptances don't really appreciate someone complaining about being bored when they've already been accepted to Stanford. I'm not trying to rain on your parade and I understand that you want some options. But some of us are hurting from rejections and are anxiously worrying about the prospect of receiving an acceptance to anywhere. This process is anything but boring when you fear you won't be going to grad school at all in the fall. -

Do you like pesto? Growing basil is worth it and cost effective if you do! -
Major Fields and Sub Fields

Completely off-topic and random, but have you seen the Soviet version of War & Peace (1968)? I don't understand a word of Russian, so I use subtitles, obviously, but it's my favorite movie of all time. It really brings the book to life. I'd be interested in your opinion of it as a budding scholar of Russia. -

Oh yes, number two is much snazzier. Number one looks all faded and 1970s-ish.

(I'm in political science.) I'm really crossing my fingers for WUSTL. I will be pretty devastated if I get rejected. I'd be happy with Brown, too. But WUSTL is my top choice.

Fall 2010 Admission Results
anxiousapplicant replied to APGradApplicant's topic in Political Science Forum
I have today joined the ranks of the rejected, thanks to Yale. I'm not terribly sorry. Here's a little story that might help cheer anyone disappointed, in a pessimistic sort of way. This isn't sour grapes because I wasn't accepted, but I didn't even like the place much when I visited a seminar with my professor. Their professor came up to us at the reception and asked who we were. When he introduced himself and said what university we were from (a hideously low ranked one), she just turned around and walked away without a word. She never even introduced herself. I never reflected on how rude that was until today when I got rejected. -
Ugh, I wish my transcripts never arrived. Because my school doesn't allow students to see the official ones, I never got to see one until I saw it scanned into one of my submitted applications. It looked so shitty--instead of listing my second major, they put "undecided" which looks pretty moronic on my part and no professors listed. I don't know what the conventions are at other schools though.

A little exercise and a lot of video games. Probably more Fallout 3 than is healthy for the stressed psyche. Too much Oblivion too. -

Ok thanks, that makes sense. Phew. I may have escaped my first rejection... for now. Although at this point I would be glad to hear any response from a school. -

Does that apply to master's applicants too, do you think? -
For everyone worried they won't get in...
anxiousapplicant replied to LadyL's topic in Waiting it Out
I'm glad you posted your inspiring story, LadyL. I'm probably going to get a -1 for this, because I get a -1 every time I post, but the negativity on this board is really staggering. So it is good to see someone saying try, try again and that it isn't the end of the world if you don't make it the first time. I admit I have been negative here at times. But now that rejections are pouring in and people are getting really upset if nothing good is happening to them, I just can't say anything negative to others. Maybe about my own situation, to poke fun at myself, but not about others. I'm really glad you're showing people that even through rejection, you can make yourself an even stronger candidate than if you had been accepted in the first round. We all need to remember that our worth as individuals is not dependent upon what some faceless admission committee decides. Let's not all focus on being rejected and try to remember why we're doing this in the first place. (So go ahead, hit the -1 please, I'm waiting.) -

I'm so worried about NYU. Congrats to those admitted to the Ph.D--quite a feat. I myself applied for the MA only, and seeing the acceptances go out makes me worried a bit... Oh well, I guess it's finally my turn for my first rejection! -

Sorry I didn't see your edit when I went to post. I didn't find the name either. I kind of wish the Yale ones were real just so we could get the waiting done with. -
I might be laughed at for this, but I use a rebounder trampoline to jog. I can't do normal running because it kills my knees, but I can run hard for an hour on the rebounder. It is quite effective as I lost a pant size in about three weeks after starting. You might find it a fun way to break up your routine. Plus, it really kills the stress from waiting!
-
that's hilarious. But I'm glad things worked out for you!
-
Yup, go ahead, you can give me -1 for an innocuous post. God forbid I insult those men belonging to the Olympian race known as professors. Let's face it, although we might love some of them and admire them, they aren't infallible. And when they tell me to write the completely wrong things in my SOP and then tell me I'm going to get into Yale when no one from our school has ever attended any grad school even remotely near "top ranked," I tend to get a little annoyed. Pardon me for offending all of your sensibilities.
-
Well, if it makes you feel any better, one of my profs told Yale he regretted that I chose to apply for their MA in poli sci instead of their Ph.D. ..... They don't offer MA only. Just goes to show how well he knows what I'm up to!
-
Ugh, I hate that. The worst is when my profs do it! Those old dinosaurs haven't left their offices in our tiny crappy university and have no clue what grad school admission is like in the 21st century. They still think it's the seventies.

Well, congrats to everyone who earned acceptances! It must feel great to see an acceptance in print and know that everything paid off. I haven't heard a peep from anywhere myself, so I am not too hopeful at this point, but at least other people are doing well. -
No, in fact I have no acceptances right now. The problem is that I have noticed a disturbing pattern with this poster who, incidentally, once said everyone on this board should be killed. So I get a little nervous when i see posts like that from him.
-
Why do you have to be so depressive and negative all the time? it's not going to win you friends nor acceptances to schools.

How are you handling your last semester? Are you excited or sad to leave? Any senioritis (I doubt it with grad school applicants)? Anything you're really going to miss or loose ends you need to tie up? I myself am taking the usual difficult courses; I didn't want to cop out, especially not with the grad school thing looming in the background. I keep forgetting I won't be there in the fall (I hope! *gulp*). I am going to miss my professors. A downer is that I used to be the sole work-study/research assistant to a professor who recently hired a new work-study student, so it's like I'm replaced before I even left, so that's put a real damper on my last semester. I guess I'm just trying to work hard and finish strong. For those of you not in school any more, how are you handling the last months before you go off to grad school?
