Sanssouci got a reaction from DCHopeful in Anyone ever confused by your profession?
I just came back from the cinema and noticed "civis" meant "people", so apparently they had some latin influence. I have a friend who does linguistics, he's made similar complaints to the ones listed, I just like winding him up now

Mine:
Almost invariable:
"What do you study?"
"Politics"
"What party do you support?/What's your position on..."
I want to talk about Hegel

Sanssouci got a reaction from Neaky22 in What you think the adcoms are saying about your application
Mine are looking at my SOP, LOR, and thinking "great", then my transcript and thinking "not bad", then my GRE and having a collective coronary.
Sadly not in that order.

Sanssouci got a reaction from gravityflyer in In Fall 2010, I'll be Attending...
Keeping the foreign contingent up, I'll, in all likelihood, be at Leiden University in the Netherlands in September.

I claim the UIUC rejection, so will definitely be staying here for a MA/MSc - see you guys next year for "Revenge of the Sanssouci" (And I'll definitely be sticking around here for a while, I love you guys )

Not that you're all on tenterhooks on this, but I'll claim the IR MA at Bristol University

This whole "I'll call X school to which I didn't apply if you call Y school to which you didn't apply" plan reminds me of Strangers on a Train. Minus the murders, of course.

Sanssouci reacted to Ferrero in Fall 2010 Admission Results
Historically, the last week of January has been a time when students get some action.

Always a chance they might notify early this year. One of those programs is finished.

Sanssouci reacted to polisciphd in Fall 2010 Admission Results
I echo cpaige ferrero, you can't be a grad student at all of these programs. And you have already made a statement about a grad program (UIUC) that you are incorrect about (i know, I'm a current student). Please provide your sources or stop posting what appear to be either guesses or false information.

I think I will be vindicated about UIUC.
Perhaps you are right about one thing, tidefan, i.e., that I should lie low. It's a stressful time.

Sanssouci reacted to polisciphd in Fall 2010 Admission Results
I understand that some things have been posted on other sites questioning what is going on with the budget situation. Having spoken with the DGS, I can tell you that, while we will have a smaller class than usual, we will indeed have a class, and that the financial aid packages will be similar to what has been given in the past

Sanssouci reacted to mudlark in Feeling very, very silly
Part of it might be that thread that you started about your reputation. It clearly gets under your skin, which might motivate people to keep it up.
You do not come across as open-minded to me. You have a tendency to hijack threads in order to expound your own theories about individuality and freedom, and then yell at anyone who disagrees and accuse them of being conformists. Not a very open-minded thing to do. Neither is comparing someone to Hitler with next to no provocation.
Even your more innocuous posts seem like they're just excuses for you to prove how radical and freethinking you are, and how boring and pedestrian everyone around you is. Frankly, it gets tiring to read. It doesn't seem like you're here to actually interact with people on the issues that they want to talk about... it seems like you're just here to posture and make yourself feel rebellious, which is better suited to a blog than a message board.

Sanssouci reacted to APGradApplicant in Fall 2010 Admission Results
I don't want this board to get nasty between people at any personal level. Obviously there are just differences of opinion. Thank God we live in a country where that is possible. So in all sincerity, Ferrero, best of luck to you in your grad school search and don't take my disagreement with you as a personal attack.

Nobody cares about your political views. The "persecuted conservative in academia" routine is just really boring and cliched.

Sanssouci got a reaction from tarski in Fall 2010 Admission Results
The Scott victory was more a commentary on the utter... nothingness of the Coakley campaign. The Dems tried to replace a real fighter and campaigner with a rather unpleasant drone, and they paid they price. MA already has a decent healthcare programme (signed by... Mitt Romney!), they could afford to sacrifice the rest of the country. One positive the Dems might get out of this, it's the kick up the arse they really needed before the midterms.

Further to the rumours going around about UIUC a couple of days ago, I've been talking to a couple of people there, apparently they're meeting to discuss the situation, and that may include not fully funding or not admitting anyone. BUT, it's much more likely they'll be fully funding, just a MUCH smaller cohort than previously.
