Did anyone else get an invitation to this trip led by a prof at CUNY to Vietnam and Cambodia? Know anything about this program? My roommate (we're both soc. grad students) got invites today.... Was everyone in ASA invited?

I'm moving for MA in Sociology. I've never even been to Tampa!!!!

Anyone else headed to USF in the Fall?
-
hi Beth, congrats! This is Sky (remember making fun of those girls at the bar who didn't even want to e there). I'm so happy for you getting in. One of the profs told me the week after the visit that they'd only be able to accept 4 applicants so I (at their advisement) took another offer for the Masters at the University of South Florida. A sizeable fellowship offered by USF was contigent on making an early decision, and it was far too much to pass up. It'll be good though, the average high temp in January is 70 in Tampa! Email me if you want, i'd love to keep in touch!

well spoken, focused. I only took my menial corporate job because it's super close to home.

it's ok, I laughed a lot too! I'll never forget why I'm going to graduate school now!

I am right there with you two. My job SUCKS--not because it's hard or in the elements or cleaning horse stalls, but it feels so belittling. Yesterday the most important task I was given was to remove all of the colored push pins from the office bulletin board and put up only white ones. I couldn't decide if it was completely hillarious I got paid to ensure we were racist in our push pins, or just completely horrible that I have a bachelors degree and this is practicaly the only job I could get in my area (Alabama isn't a hotbed for social science work). At least I already have two acceptances......

I had trouble figuring out my NID too. Go back into the ASF and it's written somewhere. Your password for the testudo is your birthday formed like 031785 good luck!

You're right! It's Presidents Day Monday.

I was wondering the same thing... Maybe snowmageddon got the best of the adcomms?
-
I plan to carry a little something. Maybe my Southern roots are coming out of the woodwork?
-
I did play the queer card because it's directly related to my research interests and subfield. I'm not sure if it has made any discernable difference or not. I'm not sure how I'd feel about it being the deciding factor in admissions.

My major prof from undergrad sent me a copy of her letter. I just looked at it again, and she spelled my name wrong as well! I'm not too concerned, I've already gotten a couple acceptances and some other good buzz from my schools. Either they didn't notice (maybe doubtful), or recognize it doesn't matter in comparison to the vitae or the writing sample or the SOP. If an admission decision comes down to whether or not my name was misspelled once in a letter I had no part in writing, then maybe that should be a red flag to steer clear. Everyone's situation is different, but I'm thinking our rush to make everything perfect is just rearing its ugly head

wow, that is disconcerting

any idea how many applicants they had?
-
I am in the same boat! I got an invite (all expenses paid [cross country even]) to a department. I'm definitely going, but I'm not sure whether to be prepared for a good grilling before they admit me, or if it's more a chance for the school to more actively recruit me..... BLUH!

I'm not sure I'd be MUCH help, but I do live in Alabama and have visited T-town as it's called a few times. I didn't attend UA, but I've heard that most students have to walk long distances (but that might be subjective...maybe it isn't THAT far) to attend class. You'll DEFINITELY want a car if possible. T-town is like most other towns in Alabama. Hardly anything is truly within walking distance. It seems that a lot of the 'main drag' type stuff is on McFarlane Blvd, and the mall is on University (I think). Tuscaloosa isn't a particularly nice town overall. Of course I'm an Auburn fan, so I might be a bit biased there! Truthfully, there are some parts of Tuscaloosa I'd stay away from in terms of living, of course I don't know enough about the town to tell you where that would be. My friend that got her Masters there lived in Cottondale about 10 minutes up the interstate. I think most of the apartments around the university are infested with loud partying undergrads. hope this helps, and you guys can message me if you want to know anything else. Sorry I'm not a huge expert. Roll Tide WAR EAGLE! (You'll get used to that if you come) hehe

Personally, I haven't heard anything from them either. I'm excited about the prospects of working with a couple of their faculty (Dr. Pfohl and Dr. McGuffey), but I'm not so sure I would like living in Boston. I'm from small town Alabama!

Who's going? What are your research interests? My main interests include deviance, sexuality, gender, and social justice. I'm excited to meet the faculty and see Boulder!
