Waiting on Harvard, Chicago, Cornell, Brown, NYU and UNC-CH. Most of those are huge long shots.

Why's Brown taking so few? I applied there for modern Euro, so I might still be in the running but that doesn't sound promising. Princeton shook me off today, but I expected that. Still got seven out there, although without an invitation to prospie weekend at NYU that's looking much less likely. Oh well, I just need one acceptance. Fingers crossed?

Oh I understand that! I was in an irritable mood, for my part. You're right to suggest that we shouldn't be so intense, and that we shouldn't beat ourselves up if we're rejected.

They just put that number there to impress us. That's the number of applications for the entire Yale graduate school this year! and my first rejection. But that's ok, it was a long shot all along!

I must say, while I agree with the substance of what you say, I don't like your attitude. Maybe because you're "already attending" you feel that you have wisdom to impart, but I believe that we are all aware of how competitive the academic world is. The constant refrain of dubious statistics warning us all of our impending failure is not really constructive, and it's not original either. That said, I think most of us realize that we are not guaranteed any kind of success. It's difficult enough to put yourself out there, put your best foot forward etc. without having to contend with the condescension of others.

Yep, France in the 20th century esp. Vichy and the far right in the 1930's... and Yale's a long shot, especially seeing as I'm waitlisted at Emory... about Emory, the grad director says they got their funding packages cut by the graduate school, and that the list this year is "short, so there's some real chance" that they'll get in touch. Who knows what that means, but it's much better than a reject I figure.

I'm still waiting... no responses at all yet, and I'm not feeling good about it. Then again, of my ten schools only Emory and UNC have sent anything out yet.

hmm that's a good point. I mean those stats were good, certainly qualified, but what about fit? Who were his potential advisors? Not that I'm such a great fit at Harvard... nor did I attend Princeton undergrad...

also, a rejection from Harvard was posted... how did they check the website? I can only log into my submitted application... and it just says it was submitted.
