Looks like people got into Louisiana State and SUNY Buffalo, congratulations future historians!

I'm glad someone came up with a name for that, it's pretty infuriating when people use that as a defense. That said, the wide spread of slavery as a practice throughout history is important to note, as long as it's not used to excuse anyone's behavior. also- Arab Trader Argument => Arafat

rejection! (haha)

well, Harvard has a terminal MA as well. if a student lacks something, like sufficient language prep etc that Harvard wants in a PHD candidate, they can admit and even fund that student for an MA as a trial. Then, if they do well enough, they can become PHD students. Brandeis does that too, as does Yale. It's a good way for them not to gamble by promising 5 years of support to a student who isn't fully proven, but still to give a kid a chance who seems to have great potential.

It's ridiculously early for them... last year they didn't say anything to anyone until February 27th or 28th.

wonder if it's the same guy... the Russianist who posted on here earlier... Rockchalk?

I'll be 22 if all goes according to plan.

Doesn't seem too unusually early for Madison... last year, the first website notifications were February 3rd and the first phone notification was January 22nd. Anyway, congratulations to all admitted and basically-admitted future academics! Didn't apply to Wisconsin, but it's a really awesome program with good placement etc.

I'm going to agree with crossmyfingers. I had an informal meeting of the type mentioned with a professor of history at Yale a month or so ago, but it was clearly unrelated to admission and was mainly informational. The only reason he met with me is because one of my Professors used to know the Yale prof when my prof was a graduate student at Yale. While I learned valuable stuff, I think pretty much anyone could set up a similar meeting and i'm not fooling myself that it's going to get me in.

Greetings seahistory! I'm applying to ten programs (first time) in modern French history, especially the Vichy period and memory of the French political right. Good luck to all!
-
I'm interested in the political history of France, especially the right wing during and after the Vichy period, but pretty much anything in French history after 1870 is of interest to me. I might want to stick some colonial history in there- I'd love to write something about collaborators and resisters in the colonies, especially Syria, Lebanon, or North Africa. NYU is the only French studies program I applied to, then 9 regular history programs. I'm writing about Francois de la Rocque, the French "fascist" leader, and his role in the resistance for my senior thesis. How about you?
-
A good point, and one that I am trying to keep in mind. Thanks for reminding us!
-
Not exactly French Studies, but I'm applying to the NYU joint PHD in French Studies and history... more of a historian myself, though. Did you apply to NYU from French and French Studies?

I heard from the graduate history secretary at UNC Chapel Hill that they've already begun reviewing apps. sorry for spoilers!

I think we're choosing not to fall prey to that kind of pessimism. Besides, if we get into good programs with strong placement we'll be fine. Look at Yale's placements, for example. They all get jobs. So a lot of this is being determined as we speak, as admissions committees mull our applications.
