Anyone else in Ontario still waiting on the results in the mail?  I already received an email from my university stating that I got the doctoral fellowship, but I'm still twitchy until I have the actual results in hand.

I felt the same way. I received my letter three days ago. However, I was sitting outside waiting for the mail person and I watched him put a brown envelope in my neighbor's mailbox and then skip my house. I stopped him and asked about the mail but he said there was nothing for my house. I went and knocked on my neighbor's door and there was no answer. So I looked in their mailbox and that brown envelope was my letter from SSHRC. So mistakes do happen. I definitely felt horrible going through my neighbor's mailbox but I just knew it was my letter. I also saw my neighbor the next day and told him what I did. LOL.

Hi everyone, I received CGS-D with a score of 13.9 from UofT, first time applicant with CGS-M prior. Hope this helps people understand the process!

What committee? I think the scores for each award vary by committee, so I'm just curious! I got 13.8 and the regular sshrc. :)

Anyone heard from UWaterloo yet?  I just talked to the other person from our department who was sent out nationally and she hasn't heard anything either.  So either we're both out or nothing yet.  ?

I have not heard from Waterloo and I just found out a few minutes ago from the chair of my department that she hasn't heard anything as well.

  4. Interesting. I am not a current SSHRC holder and I got it. The email was from someone in the grad awards office to my grad coordinator and said to please forward the info to those who are eligible to apply. But honestly, I think the grad coordinator is lazy and probably emailed it to our entire department. LOL.

Hey - I received an email from my institution notifying me about eligibility to apply for the CGS-MSFSS (Micheal Smith Foreign Study Supplement). Did anyone else receive this today? Does this mean that some schools might already know some results? Am I reading too far into this? Probably.

Did they email you by name? My school sent an email a week ago to the grad students in my department. It was sent by the grad coordinator and included a pdf about how to apply but it wasn't an individualized email.

My department had even nominated me for a convocation award this graduation season. Oh well.. ?

Don't feel so bad. You honestly can't control how your external reader will react (I also read your post on reddit). I'm a second year PhD and my advisor said he did not recommend a specific prof I was interested in for my committee because he is really critical and difficult. He would not have known this if that professor didn't invite him to his home university to help review one of his upcoming books. So I feel like I am dodging a bullet. It's not always a lack of skill, but sometimes problematic people. Work super hard this month and I'm sure everything will work out. ❤️

  7. Anyone waiting for OGS? I thought I saw some posts that some students were awarded OGS already? Or maybe I am mixed up with old threads I read. I'm just worried whether cuts could be possible to OGS by the Ford government.

    University of Guelph:

*University of Guelph 2019-20 OGS allocations will be updated above when they are confirmed by the ministry.

    University of Waterloo:

APRIL 23, 2019 UPDATE: The University of Waterloo has not yet received official communication from the Ministry of Advanced Education and Skills Development (MAESD) regarding the number of OGS/QEII-GSST awards available for 2019-2020. As such, OGS and QEII-GSST award notification emails will be delayed and will not be sent to applicants on April 23, 2019 as originally anticipated. Please continue to check this page for updates.

    Western University:

*pending approval of allocations by the Ontario Ministry of Training, Colleges and Universities (MTCU)

  8. So any assumptions on whether SSHRC results have been mailed out? Easter long weekend has thrown off any predictions for me on where our applications might be in the process. Also, who from SSHRC is tweeting on a Saturday? LOL.

  9. OGS is due Feb. 1st at my school. I'm a second year phd, applying for OGS. My SSHRC application was forwarded to the national competition for this year. So hopefully my OGS app has a good result. Who knows though!

I did not apply for SSHRC or OGS during my masters degree. I applied for both last year which was my first year of doctoral studies. I was so rushed I literally spent like five days putting each application together and did not expect a good result... and my SSHRC app was not forwarded and I did not get OGS. I had two book reviews due the same week SSHRC apps were due... and I chose to focus on my assignments! I think a similar situation happened with OGS last year as well, I had a book review due and a conference presentation. So I pretty much wrote off both applications.

I have a large foldable pet pen that I have used to foster kittens and will probably buy a second one for the move. When my bf and I stop at a hotel midway through our move, I plan to keep each cat in their own pen with their own litter boxes and food because I don't want them to be super scared and hard to find/grab in a hotel room. These pens will also be useful when movers remove our stuff from our current apartment and load our stuff into our new apartment.

I have a big pet pen and actually use it when travelling by car. My cats freak out when they are in their individual carriers when driving so I let them into their big pen together and they can move around freely, see outside, and sleep by each other. I have learned that cats need to be able to see what is going on and where they are going while driving and they need a bit of room to move. Now I drive all the time with my cats. My cats also have free range in hotel rooms, it take them a couple hours to explore and smell around the room but then they settle in fine.

  11. Thanks piglet and shadowclaw. My friend actually told me about meetup.com the other day and although I was hesitant, I looked up groups in my area and there are lots that are of interest to me. Lots of hiking, kayaking, exploring the area, etc. I will definitely be looking into some of these group meet ups. I had no idea that website even existed but it is exactly what I need. I hope this doesn't sound like an advertisement for that website haha.

  12. My first vent:

I moved from the west coast to the east… and most of my cohort are from within an hour or two of my school. I really like everyone in my cohort but when the rare chance arises and we have free time, no one wants to explore the area like I do. I am close to Niagara Falls, Detroit, New York, Chicago… etc., all places I would love to see but am alone in this. My peers also have their own "hometown" friends close by and I have been feeling pretty isolated since moving out east.

I am doing well in my program and have no intentions to move back home. I am just lonely and wish there were a few more students in my cohort from further locations.

  13. I just moved cross country via plane. I had six bags of luggage and my cat. I moved into my apartment Sept. 1st and it was a complete disaster; absolutely nothing was cleaned before I showed up. So instead of exploring my new city this week before school officially starts, I have been cleaning 4-5 hours per day. I am also waiting for my funding so that I can buy a proper bed. I do really like my new city though, and my apartment is beginning to look good as it becomes more clean.

  14. I splurged quite a bit on a new bag for graduate school. I bought a large "softy saddle leather hobo" by Marc by Marc Jacobs. I love it so much and it is big enough for hauling books around. In my defence, I bought it for half price on the haute look website.
