  1. I'm in the honorable mentions/alternates list, too. Congrats to those who got the fellowship and to the NSF fellows!
  2. I got an honorable mention and am on the alternates list if people decline the award, so that's something!
  3. Hello! Yes, @Sasha Genius, angsting is a good word for it, haha. I'm a second year Education/Writing student, so this is my last chance. What programs are you considering? I hope we all hear good news too, @DCTXK!
  4. I was rejected for pre-doctoral, interdisciplinary. I'm not as bummed as I thought I would be, since I found out I'm receiving funding from my university. Congrats to all who got honorable mentions and the actual fellowship!
  5. I applied predoctoral in interdisciplinary studies, education and English. I haven't heard anything, either. Even if it's a no, I'd like to hear back soon.
  6. Mike45 - I'm in a similar position, but I'm not planning to ask my department/advisor until I hear back from Ford. No reason to let them think about taking money away, haha.
  7. My advisor told me I would be getting one, but she didn't know the amount. The Vice Chair of our department (Education) emailed me with the details.
  8. Has anyone heard back from the Ford Foundation yet? The ides of March are approaching...
  9. I just found out I got a Central Fellowship in Education and mine's for $24,000, which I felt was a lot until I saw these numbers... I've been told getting any funding in my department is rare, though, so I'm thrilled.
  10. The commute between UCSB and Ventura all depends on time of day, but on average is 30 mins. I'd have to ask around regarding schools, since there are so many. I know Buena High School is a decent school and the feeder areas are nice. What ages are your children?
  11. Regarding Santa Barbara - I grew up in SB county and now live in the neighboring Ventura county. A house down the street from me is selling at the very normal price of $480,000 and while we live in a very nice neighborhood, we are hardly in the prime realm of SB, where that would hardly buy you a shack... Buying on the income of a stipend just wouldn't happen, unless your spouse has a job that is very lucrative or you have deep pockets. If you have questions about the area from someone who has lived here a while, let me know.
  12. Hello everyone, I also applied for the pre-doctoral fellowship, but for an interdisciplinary combination of English and Education. I've gotten one fellowship offer from one of my schools and word of one with no amount details yet from the other (which I'd prefer to attend), so I'm less anxious than I thought I would be about this fellowship. It would still be a great opportunity and honor, though. Btw: Mid-march seems so far away...
  13. I took a practice test this Monday (the first one the GRE website lets you do for free) and got a 162 on the Verbal and a 154 on the Quant, with no explicit studying for the verbal. I know my area of weakness was the vocab (mostly just needing to refresh higher level words and the more finite definitions of some of them). According to the results page, I only missed two in the comp sections. With those sections, I found it helpful to skim longer passages for the main idea in each paragraph, and then try to answer the questions. If it referenced a specific section, I went back to it. I found this especially helpful when reading a passage outside of my wheelhouse (like a scientific article, when I'm an English geek). If it was a short passage, (like your 16 line example), I just read it all the way through, and re-read specific lines if needed. I hope that helps!
