  1. Not sure why such a substantial proportion of my schools have given decisions to other applicants and no news for me  (Duke, NYU, Notre Dame, UCLA).  Kind of odd.

I am in the same boat with Stony Brook. I am hoping it is a sort of unofficial waitlist of sorts. But then again, I have no idea.

  2. If you haven't gotten an acceptance from Stony Brook it may likely be a rejection. I emailed the DGS and he informed me I was rejected. I was very close to being admitted too. First official rejection.

Thank you so much for the info and I am sorry that you were rejected.

It kind of makes me angry that they have decisions, but they are not sending them out. Is it that hard to really send out an email?

Even though I got rejections from both I really appreciate schools like USC and USCD which send out all decisions simultaneously. It's classier and more self confident than having waves of acceptances and unofficial waitlists.

You know? I feel the same way with schools. It appears that WashU did the same thing, and even though I was rejected, it was much better. Some people heard from Stony Brook almost two weeks ago now, and I am still just waiting here. I would much rather have the decision and know so I do not have to keep on checking my email.

  4. Sorry to hear DubbyTee and Evgeny. Hoping you both get an acceptance soon - plenty of good wishes going your way.

Good day for me though - fficially got accepted to UNC. Big relief, that might be MY number one.

Thank you very much for that. And congrats on getting into UNC, and even more congrats considering it might be your number one.

I am waiting on Oklahoma, my number one, and I think there is a very good shot I can get in there, but decisions aren't expected till March 1. Just need to wait it out a little longer.

  5. are you trolling? Lol

mate, sorry if I was unclear, but the point of my post is that I have NOT heard anything, whereas people have been posting about acceptances from them for the past week. Virtually every junior faculty member, let alone their grad students, know about this website...so, they should know that once an acceptance is given out, everyone will know about it. Therefore, I dont think it is unreasonable of me to be a little annoyed that I still have no idea whether or not I am sitting on a wait-list, or will be rejected outright. But, I suppose that I will take the initiative if I've still not been contacted by them (or if my status in their system still hasn't changed) by week's end.

By "in limbo," I mean that I've heard nothing from them. If you are referring to my signature, yeah, I am just assuming a rejection, but would love confirmation.

I try not to troll, but was completely confused by the in limbo, and the signature lol. My bad!

And I agree with the point that you are making. I would much rather have a known status (even if it was a waitlist) than just sitting here waiting. It is a little ridiculous that some people know while others don't. We are just asking for a status update.

  6. I really wish that departments were better about sending out waitlist notifications, and rejections to align with admission notifications.

I am in limbo with regard to Colorado, Stony Brook and, now, Texas-Austin.

Yes, I could just email them myself, but, on the other hand, they could also utilize their online status portals and/or send a generic email.

My bitching here is in hope that future ad com members/DGS people might see this thread and see all of the frustration that lacking communication causes.

Have you officially heard anything from Stony Brook or just assuming?

  7. They emailed me. The status on the webpage hasn't changed though (still says application is under review). During my interview he alluded to a waitlist of people they had ready to go to if the admits declined so theres still hope :)

Thank you for that! I am terrified to email them to seem like I am bothering them! But thanks for the heads up!

First PhD acceptance! Email from Texas A&M Prof. to IR admits (11 admits).

Can say I honestly wouldn't have been accepted without the help of many people on this forum and the advice passed down over the years.

    Thanks GradCafe :)

    Congrats!!!!

  8. Feel ya. Didn't care about the results, or have opened gradcafe until a few days ago, when I realized that 2-3 schools I have applied to have already sent their acceptances. Oh, the pressure is real!!!!!

Now the anxiety has consumed me.

The anxiety killed me last week. It literally made my week awful. If there was anyway I could suggest avoiding letting the anxiety consume you, I would recommend it.

Also still haven't heard from any of my 4 schools that I applied to. But Oklahoma just closed their application yesterday, and LSU is still open till the 15th. But nothing from Stony Brook or WUSTL

  9. Hi BFB. I would first like to thank you for answering all of these questions, and really giving knowledgeable insight into the process. It really is nice to hear how the process works.

My question though, is more of a concern for me that you have covered before, but of course, I am still worried. My GRE Quant score is low (151), and my verbal is higher (159) with a decent analytical (4.5). I just really fear that my Quant is holding me back, even though I have other good qualifications (4.0 GPA, 2 publications, 3 conference papers, etc.). My concern is that my Quant score is dragging me down, and I was just curious to see how much weight that holds during the process.

Thank you so much again for doing this!
