  1. One of my advisers went to an unfunded practice-oriented school. But she was unusually successful in securing a position in research and academia. She was an exception, not the rule.
  2. Never. I majored in psychology because I want to be filthy rich. Now I'm just rolling in dollar bills (of debt).
  3. If Business Insider says it, it must be true. Just like Buzzfead and Cosmo.
  4. I'd be totally the same way. I took courses as an undergrad. I don't think it did me any favors trying to get into grad school. The one exception might be statistics? Anyway, I'm not sure I'd leap at the opportunity to take those grad courses either because I assume you'd have to pay for them yourself?
  5. I try to put as much identifying information about myself out there as possible, including using my actual picture.
  6. Me too! A long time ago. Just discovered it in my spam, today. at least I know.
  7. You mean at potlucks or social stuff? It can go either way (who approaches who), but my suggestion is not to talk about research or anything sociology, unless 1) it is the formal interview portion of the visit 2) it just comes up in the course of natural conversation. Don't hump their leg the whole time, but also don't be an ice queen. Talk about stuff you like to do for fun that is G -rated and professional. They want to see that you're a normal human they can relate to because you'd be spending a lot of time together for 4-5 years. Hope that helps.
  8. Maybe it is taking forever to get to you because you're in Nigeria?
  9. Usually a week, sometimes a few. The grad school rarely goes against the department's admission decision. In those cases, it is usually if the applicant's qualifications fall below the (general) graduate school's minimum requirements (e.g., 3.00; 50th percentile on both subsections of the GRE).
  10. You're a different field, but that word limit seems good. I would think about telling little stories in a way that conveys you have the qualities of a desirable candidate. And avoid telling things that are too personal (i.e., awkward self-disclosure).
  11. They absolutely do peruse the forums. Every hour. Every day. They're not busy, you know.
  12. My good friend, double IPA beer, is helpful. I just try not to think about because there's nothing I can do.
  13. Say you were interested in working with them, so you're dissappointed you were not admitted. But you appreciated the interview (if there was one). Then ask how you can improve as an applicant.
  14. Probably, 'She is awesome. How can we get into her pants?' jk I really don't make any assumptions about how my app is viewed at this point...
