  1. i hope so. im gonna try to get into the Hammond Purdue campus, but I may have to just pay my way in, I think they're TAs are really underfunded. IDK. I can only hope. I'll check some other places. I'm really upset, I dropped about $400 in Bloomington between the visits and application, no more, because I also took off work. The director made it seem like there would be no problem with me getting in
  2. I just got the email rejection. It said it wasn't because I was a bad candidate but either I wasn't a good fit or too many applications. Either way, it looked like a generic. I'm really bummed out, Ill have to scramble for a community college masters. Maybe if I do enough research I can get in a good place in two years :'( edit: i just reread it, it was signed by the Director, and I've emailed him before so this was definitely a generic. he doesn't write like that :,(
  3. @jujubea if I get into Bloomington I may not have to worry, but if not I'll need to look at my options.
  4. Also, sorry about double post, but everyone applying to PhD and already have or are working in Masters, when did you start your PhD search? The second semester?
  5. I've got a meeting with Purdue Calumet next week. Its not a large school and it focuses on professionals, not researchers, but I need to boost my chances after the Purdue main campis rejection. I also emailed the directed at IU Bloomington, there's going to be a committee meeting this week, but there may not be any word for anyone until the week after next. Spring break starts Monday here.
  6. @CFBrown I think I have a good chance, but with all the budget cuts at the more popular schools and the fact I'm an anth not a comm undergrad, I think its likely I don't move off the wait list. The two programs I applied to blatantly told me they don't care for GRE scored for american students and my GPA is ok. I think americorp is a good chance, since funding is always my issue @grad_wannabe I haven't looked into that! There are prob opportunities in Chicago as well (I live very close) I know there aren't any in the closest schools, but there are tons in Chicago and think tanks!
  7. Due to the cost, I only applied to two programs for the Fall, which was probably not a good choice. Although I've been waitlisted for one, it's still a good chance I won't get in this Fall. I'd like some advice on what is a good strategy for a backup plan. If this is your second round, what did you do after your first round of rejections? Share your plans for a year out of school. Here are some ideas I have so far (no particular order): Americorp Peacecorp Teaching Assistant, Public or Charter Schools Museum/Park Public Education fields I didn't prepare for anything besides graduate school, so I feel stuck between a rock and a hard place. I have a BA in anthropology, and my minor was a focus in environmental public health. Some experience with children and tutoring.
  8. if i could, i would totally go, but they accept so few. only 70 something graduates since they opened the program! and last year the pool was higher. but they've had so many great people come out of that campus. there's a graduate of the HASTS program that works in the Comp Info department at Bloomington, and that's prob the closest I'll get to it. and, if your in any Media and STEM related research from the social science side, MIT is a research hot spot! but, it just wasn't realistic for me to aim for.
  9. It was last spring on their website, in one of the FAQ pages. It wasn't on the plan, it was over the average time spent by their graduates. I'd have to search for it. It struck me as so long, I stopped looking into the school, plus the fact that they don't offer a MA during your time there. I need that option, because I've had such funding issues through my undergraduate I need the opportunity to back out with something more than just debt. Im pretty sure it was on a page that warned about the job market, like the markets horrible blah blah blah average 8 years to complete blah blah no MA. It was enough to scare me from the site. It changed since I last looked. It had 2013's admittance numbers then, not 2014.
  10. I looked into MIT, but their HASTS program. Aren't their PhDs time there notoriously long? HASTS was 8 years! With no MA! Idk if I could risk that, even for MIT
  11. Sure thing! Its my second, I think I have a good chance. The director is so nice! And they have such a great campus!
  12. I'll be applying to education departments if I don't get in this season. They have swinging door admissions. Hopefully ones with a good comm dept near by (I'll try Purdue first). If not I'll be back next year. Still waiting from them though. @ghostkitten are you still waiting from Bloomington as well?
  13. I'm sorry everyone who's not got into uwmadison. They're having horrible funding problems though thanks to their governor.
  14. I just got the email. I have been wait listed. I'm still pissed though, I should never learn stuff like this thru twitter!
  15. Purdue's communication dept just posted on twitter that they're having a grad school welcome weekend with a photos and everything. I guess that means I didn't get in
  16. You're right about the interdisciplinary focus being less common in academia. i want to pursue interdisciplinary work, so I applied to two departments that developed their programs for it. Still though, on my visits, the grad students said even those sort of places, with being able to take many classes in other departments and there being low department requirements (course count wise) it's still hard to stick with interdisciplinary stuff just because professors get stuck in the literature of their field and have a hard time adapting. It kinda makes sense. I feel like its the ideal of academic, but hard to push through the jargon and habit boundaries in the fields.
  17. I'm still waiting from both of mine. I was sure Purdue would have sent out acceptance already (the coordinator said they would have urgh). I've already contacted them once so I'm scared to again.
  18. You all are probably right. I contacted my advisor in my panic and she said the same. Either someone is fighting for me orvtheyre looking for a fellowship/funding. I really hope all is well. The Dept's were recently cut up and put in a new school, so maybe they're searching for funding. I'm from the cultural perspective and that was the dept that got the most hacking.
  19. Is it? Idk, I'm afraid the director (that really liked me) may just be trying to see if all my writing is shit. Like grasping for straws. I have an exam today, its not a good day to stress
  20. Bloomington just requested another writing sample and I just sent it. Is that a good sign? Or really bad. Was my sample awful? I'm super worried now. Is that a normal thing?
