  1. I find the confidence of everyone around me is the most stressful part about the wait. I know they mean well, but this is my second go-around, and I know how much the process is just chance (and a lot of preferential treatment towards the "top" schools, so a lot of classism). I have no confidence in my ability to get in, not because I think I'm a bad researcher, but because there is just no knowing. That eats me up. I didn't turn down a job tho, that it really rough. I'm hoping I get told my results early enough to plan for applying to jobs if need be.
  2. @surprise_quiche That is true. If you get any information on when their prospective/recruitment day is let me know! I may do the same with UIC, I was less intimidated at that campus. Plus, their quarter system at NU makes it much more difficult to get on their schedules.
  3. @surprise_quiche I can't send emails to the POIs now, cause I have a pathological fear of bothering people, but is your POI Janice Radway? I requested to work with Kate Baldwin and Dilip Goankar because I'm politics focused. I've applied to UIC and Wayne State now, at UIC I did get to speak ad attend a class with my POI, she's great. Not with the other two I mentioned in my SOP.
  4. Hello, I've applied to Northwestern University's rhetoric tracks PhD program and will be submitting my applications for Illinois-University at Chicago and Wayne State tomorrow, so the horrible wait begins soon. This is my second time around, I applied in 2015 as well but only got into a MA program. My research is on media representations and articulations of intersectionality in activist coalitions on issues of environmental racism, immigration and incarceration. Has anyone heard anything from Northwestern just yet? I know the wait for the other two will be quite a while.
  5. How was your time there? I REALLY want to go there for my PhD, but looking at the other candidates, 11/35 of them went to an Ivy League schools (Not counting the ones from a foreign and large research state schools) and they seem to prefer people with their MA from The New School. Is it really hard to enter without a pedigree? You can PM me if you'd prefer not to post something really long here.
  6. For the same sake I'll ramble about mine as well. The professor got back to me a week later, but he didn't know about my language request, so I'll probably email one of the professors that I hope to work under (but it seems far too early for that). I also am now aware that my program probably won't prepare me for the intense writing and theory that is essential for the programs I know I want to attend to (IDK if any of you have listened to the talks out of NYU Steinhardt, but they are definitely more rigorous than my current department), so I'm turning my focus to research publications and media production. I don't know how I'll function under the financial weight! It too me a month of nosing around my department to finally get to the professor that actually would let me take production courses (they've sectioned them off to the undergraduates despite using them to market towards graduate student! all the "production" grad courses are theatre!!!!!) and I've started to invest in my own equipment for field filming (im in documentary and edu media to its not too bad, I guess). But the worst is, I've been accepted to 3 conferences! The first two I couldn't attend, but the co-author went. The last one is in Reno, so I've been trying to get my department to help me finance going (the co-author is a prof from my undergrad school, but since im not a student or affiliate there, they won't help me). Despite telling me they help with funding during my application process, just getting them to answer emails is like pulling teeth! How am I suppose to drop $500-$1000 to every place I get accepted to! Its like one disappointment after another and I'll have at least 2 1/2 years left here.
  7. I'd like to read it. Also, from your experience so far (if you've had the classes), is their "communication and culture" from an anthropological definition of culture or an english/theatre definition of culture? With Kraidy there, I'm guessing more anthropology? And are they just focused on news and journalism for their "Media Institutions and Systems" or is it more the mechanics? It's on my list of places, but I've settled to take 3 years for masters, so two years for PhD program research. @ajayghale The director is a professor. So far I'm having a 50% email response rate. Lisa Gitelman and JoEllen Fisherkeller do email back.
  8. Has anyone applied, attended, done research with or visited NYU Steinhardt Media Studies program? Its my number one pick and I've talked to the Chair before (she answers emails really well) and another prof who also answered back really quickly (these are the two I'm personally interested in studying under) but the Graduate Director isn't answering my emails. I asked about foreign language requirements/suggestions if I'm going to focus on the historical perspectives in media studies, and no answer. Is this a shared experience? I'm not actually applying until at least 2017 Fall admissions, but Id like to get to the department early.
  9. I see I just missed the opportunity to participate in the survey, but how did the conference go? And congratz on Bloomington. An early welcome from the Hoosier State!
  10. So my family is English (first gen US on mothers side), and while my primary aim for a PhD program is NYU steinhardt and UCLA, I'd like to aim for Oxfords Internet Institute and Cambridge's PhD in Education (my interests lie in the future of educatuonal and academic/scholarly media) but as a first generation college graduate, I've spent all my undergraduate time realizing how much I was unprepared for advancing in academia (hence my research interests). I've learned a lot about the American education system in the last two years, but I know nothing of the English system. I have a year to prepare before application season starts again (I expect to finish my MA in 2 years). I know a fee people from the 2015 application season got into Oxford and UCL, so I'd like help preparing. Anything is helpful. I'm going to run through all the application sites and try to talk to professors and coordinators in addition to my general research in the MA career, but I'd really like the imput of students. Especially recent students. Even reading lists are welcome! But how to navigate university websites and their terminology would be very useful. I only know much about UCL, but not much about how British academia differs from the US (such as what they expect from students).
  11. Does anyone know any collectives, listservs or associations that are welcoming to graduate students? Not just that they accept them, but are very welcoming to new, inexperienced members. I've run into a lot that give a very elitist vibe. I don't want to feel excluded, it wouldn't be worth the trouble.
  12. Did anyone apply and get into it interview for northwestern? I'm in the approval process for calumet, but I think northwestern will be one of my top for PhD apps in a year, I'd like some pointers. Congrats on everyone making their decisions!
  13. Wow, thats aweful. I have a friend there at their Sociology/Linguistics program and his twitter has been nothing but rants over the budgets cuts (most directed at the president) so you're next on the list? you didn't receive an offer?
  14. You're completely right. They also have the most funding opportunities, that are stable for graduate students Hard work or original ideas doesn't always equal success, because it's all about being seen and the perceived usefulness of youre research. My advisor, that had the same trouble as me getting into a program out of undergraduate (she got her masters from the same place she's sending me too before she got into University of Iowa for PhD) said that if you aren't sure you'll get into a top school or at least the second tier, make sure you orientate yourself to be a great asset to a teaching school. if you can secure a diverse teaching role, it's easier to push into a tenure track, even if at a satellite campus.
  15. Do you have prospects outside academia? Or maybe look for a museum/public edu to skirt around until next season?
  16. Its busy time for classes right now. Does anyone know anything about Iowa State University? I got contacted by a prof there Rey Junco, and looking online says he's looking for PhD students for youth and learning research. I'm guessing he's got funding, but he's also moved a lot in the last 2 years. If I can get into a financially secure PhD program I guess I shouldn't be too picky (even though this is my research area the degree would be in higher education, from a school if education, he's a psych background I'm an anthropology and media studies). I have a email or Skype meeting with him in about a week, but I'm really conflicted. I'm just about to apply to Purdue Cal comm MA, but funding is shaky, but in Chicago area. I'm so conflicted.
  17. For everyone who got into the Oxford Internet Institute or other English schools (I'm looking into UCL) what are some tips for making the transfer across the Atlantic? My family is English, so culturally I'm fine, but I don't know anything about the academic differences (I'm the first college graduate in the family).
  18. Here's the ranking system my professor in Media Studies advises us to use. In the greater communication field, before are a few of prestigious journals: Human Communication Research Journal of Communication Communication Theory But, just because the journal is currently highly ranked doesn't mean much if it's not in your interests. The best bet is to find a researcher you like, find their CV and see where they're publishing and who they are quoting are published in. Ranking is only in retrospect and is all based on who cited who and how often. Check out google scholar too. What's your interest? And where are you coming from? If you're from China or Taiwan, a lot of the research I look at comes from there and has just been republished in English in journals like Computers and Education, so there may not be as big of a difference as you think!
  19. I have a question. Does anyone know anything, or has transferred from one graduate program to another? I know it's not something people would normally advise (for one, a department is losing an investment!) but I'd like to look into it. I know people say getting a MA is important, doesn't matter what the name on the degree is, but I'm not one to believe that. Elitism is alive and kicking. If I could transfer from a local school to a research institution, I'd like to know how it works.
  20. I looked into this, but their application date for funding has already passed. ill keep and eye on the dept though thanx! Did anyone here get into NYU Steinhardt? Or UC Irving?
  21. They shouldn't be allowed to do that! I also had a POI tell me similar things! I was going to visit a third time as well if the weather hadn't gotten bad. I cut out Christmas and birthdays to apply for graduate school, now I'm scrambling to find one more place to apply before it's too late. IDK what I'll do. I don't have any job prospects with an anthropology degree and no internships. I completely focused on graduate school
