Near Eastern Studies/NELC Fall 2018
Almaqah Thwn replied to felakuti's topic in Interdisciplinary Studies
I've found it to be a lot like dating. You can be handsome/gorgeous, talented, and be the perfect match on paper, but then you just get rejected for reasons that you could not anticipate. Then, you can screw everything up completely, but it somehow works out. There are just so many variables that you don't know about-- a professor of interest could be going on sabbatical, it could be another professors turn to take a grad student, there may be a student who the professor personally knows that they want to succeed, a professor may be lying to you about them being interested in you, a professor may be interested in you but the department may be emphasizing a certain subfield that year, etc. I've done this for three years and got straight rejected last year by every PhD program to which I applied. It's a crap shoot and the admissions councils have to go through many other similarly qualified candidates like ourselves. At some point, they just have to send out mass generic rejections and move on with their business. But all that to say, I emphasize with you completely. It sucks and it's miserable. But at least the good news is that we only need one place to say yes once. -
Is ND's preview weekend this weekend? I'm attending Baylor's this weekend, but I'll raise one for you halfway across the US, given the opportunity. Also, if ND's interviews are this weekend, for future applicants, it may be good to note that if you get interviewed at Baylor and ND that you may have to choose between the two...

Fun fact: Vanderbilt's acceptance letters are actually sent out early in the form of cryptic seemingly-blank posts on the grad cafe. The first applicant to break the code receives an additional stipend during their duration of study.

Near Eastern Studies/NELC Fall 2018

Chicago rejections have been posted on the website by the way. Go check the site! Maybe you've been waitlisted. As reputable as Chicago's program is, it's honestly a bit of a relief. I have not heard good things about crime around the area. -
I completely agree and I think few people recognize the seriousness of such in the application process.

Near Eastern Studies/NELC Fall 2018

Just FYI: Johns Hopkins' NES is sending out/has sent out short list notifications. They do this every year around this time and position on the short list does not guarantee admission. It also can take a month or two for them to hammer out funding. So if you're on the short list, don't be too anxious if it takes a while for them to follow up. Rejections from the short list usually come in pale yellow envelops with a hand-signed letter, while acceptances I believe come by email. -

Are you talking about Dieleman? I was actually interested in some of his work on Coptic scribal practice a few months before the application was due. Then, when I went to write the statement of purpose, he disappeared from the website. -
So, does that apply to Baylor's preview weekend as well? I'm a bit confused with your earlier statement that schools like Baylor will "use that visiting weekend as a final interview and make cuts after the visit." Or, would the cuts only be if students are just whack for some reason?

One thing I wish I had invested in early on for grad school was a nice $50-70 copy of the Hebrew Bible. Instead, I was poor in seminary and bought a cheap $30 one, in which pencil writing bleeds through like ten pages. While I do have Accordance (Which is a must if you're working with the languages. Moreso than the other Bible language programs such as Logos or Bibleworks, which are less user friendly and clunkier), sometimes it's just nice to have a hardback to work on in your bed or to take to a class so that the professor can know you're not secretly parsing the verbs when they're not looking.

It's quite a relief- it was the first news that I received (aside from a Baylor interview invite), so I know now at very least I'll end up in a program somewhere. What happens now, will happen. I'll be studying what I want to later this year and getting paid for it, so that's pretty sweet. I've heard there are less applicants this year, at least in religion, from other people. However, I'm not sure if that's the reason or not. There was a sharp drop in activity just a few years ago. I think a lot of the Bible people realized they can just camp out on the Religion PhD topic instead, which is much more active. Also, for those of you who still are waiting anxiously, take comfort! It's the weekend and professors are most likely not working on applications now. You can sit back for two days and not freak out over messages, emails, and missed phone calls from spammers with the same area code as the schools to which you applied. -
Can confirm. I am a Vandy application and I do not know you. I'm also waiting to see what Vanderbilt says. I met all the professors in my subfield at SBL (and spent extensive time with one), so I am curious if I would even get an interview invite if they were considering me.

Near Eastern Studies/NELC Fall 2018

I feel like the NES/NELC base on this website is growing more and more inactive every year, haha. Best of luck to everyone! After three years of applying to different schools, I was accepted to UT Austin's MELC in Hebrew Bible and the Ancient Near East last week. My financial aid package is still being processed, though. -
From the professor that I talked to there recently, I believe it's been reduced to 1 student, at least in OT. Albeit, there is always the Theology and Practice fellowship.

Something also worth considering is that if you're professors are boasting about your ability, then that probably reflects well in your letters of recommendation. Even if a professor isn't well known, a strong letter can go a long way.

Well after three years of applying to PhD programs, I got an email today telling me that I have been accepted into UT Austin's Hebrew Bible and the Ancient Near East program! I'm very excited and thankful that this entire process is finally going to be over. I've been anticipating doing PhD work in Bible for like 4-5 years now and actually knowing that I will be doing it later this year instead of serving coffee to pay student loans is such a relief. Also, I would have had to do the GRE again this year if I didn't get in somewhere. I'm so glad I never have to give ETS my time or money ever again. It's also worth mentioning that if you get shortlisted by a program, that doesn't necessitate that you'll be accepted or that the professors didn't like you. So be excited if it does happen to you, but don't start planning anything.

For those of you looking for any last minute MA programs, there was an advertisement in the Agade Listserv for a funded MA in Syriac Theology at the University of Salzburg in Austria. The coursework is done in English. There's no hard deadline for applications or to submit scholarship requests, albeit they encourage you to apply as soon as possible to make sure that you can get a visa before the time starts. So if any of you are still looking for programs to apply to, here's one worth looking at! Also, I have no affiliations for the program, so I can't tell you anything more beyond the site and what I've asked them personally. Here's the email below:

So, I saw someone got an interview for OT on January 5th at Baylor and expected to get rejected after that. But as it turns out, I just got an invite to interview weekend as well! And since there are two OT positions there, I can wish you the best of luck, MonkeyMagic, and sincerely mean it! Congrats, you guys!

Welp, not anymore. Duke's Religious Studies PhD program just extended their deadline to the 20th. I wonder if they weren't getting as many applications as expected?

Oh man, that sucks. I was a more moderate grad student in a fundamentalist school, so I can somewhat relate (although, I was on my way out and not in). Are you looking to continue your PhD studies elsewhere? Yeah, they seem to have good people. I've talked with a few schools on the same level as Emory and they seemed to be a bit higher, though. That being said, if I were to only get into Emory and no other school, I would run with it anyway. And yes! I am looking at Baylor, Chicago, Cornell, Duke, Johns Hopkins, UCLA, UT Austin, Vanderbilt, and possibly Brandeis, depending on how much time I have. What specific interests do you have in Hebrew Bible?

Welp, I remember three years ago when I thought I'd get into a PhD program and wouldn't have to go through this long process again. Now, it's the third round of PhD applications. For you newcomers, the moral of the story is: Be prepared to invest a few years, even though its possible you may get in the first. Also, apply to a lot of different schools if you have the time and resources. That being said, doing the applications this go around is not nearly as painstaking and I feel much more confident in my skills and will be in a much better position academically than if I had gotten accepted to my top choice two years ago (which almost happened). All that aside, I'm PhD applicant in Hebrew Bible, focusing on comparative ancient Near Eastern studies and gender and sexuality. I'll be seeing all of you frequently here within the next few months. But in the meantime, good luck on your applications and getting in touch with professors! Also, for those of you applying to Emory: How does placement look in your field? I was interested in the Hebrew Bible department, but their placement for that field did not seem to be too high (although, I could just be mistaken).

C'mon guys. There's not even half a page of anxious posting today. You're slacking. Also, congratulations, that's great news! You have a future, at very least!
