  1. how do i capture an animation on a website? i will cite the source of course. help me. post an answer on my page. thanks.

  2. is anyone going to Virginia tech,Cornell or Purdue for phd or master's in structures? i'm seriously considering them. i don't like the location for each but i like the programs.
  3. based on my own experience email the grad studies chair(for the dept. ) is the best way since his job is to talk to admits like u. i emailed the dept chair for one school and he never got back(even though i was told to email prof. about funding). the secretary is the worst person to talk to about anything related to funding. in my experience.
  4. wow, i hope u get into stanford, berkeley. the west coast is best for earthquake engineering since the north east doesn't really teach earthquake design in a serious way 'cos earthquakes are rare.
  5. on the other hand, i know at least for a fact that 2 schools i applied to have sent admissions to early applicants. but i haven't seen any for the 2 schools on the results page. so this place is not representative of the applicant pool. i've posted earlier comments about this.
  6. i had this problem and blogged about it here: anyway, email the professor in charge of graduate admissions and pour out your technical heart: talk about why you're applying to grad school and give technical reasons. pretty much update them on your professional life. u should do this because it is likely they'll take a second look at ur file since it was not complete. if they had rejected u already this email will only help give u a second chance. as i said, i had a very similar experience. good luck.
  7. lol. the opposite is what i experienced. my top choice has sent out admits already for people who applied early(i did). so anyway, i actually called them to ask about the deadline for a fellowship, and was informed that in fact the department had sent out admits since last week. it turns out that they didn't get one of my LORs. weird!! i fixed it immediately and life is good. well, still wondering what my opposite experience was? well, nobody has posted an admit in the results page for my this school. so i had an epiphany: gradcafe is not representative of the general grad school applicant pool.
  8. hmm, i will update this post next week when they send me the decision. i was told that they'll make a decision within a week. in fact they've already sent decisions for people who applied early(like moi). it sounded to me that they've already decided based on my 2 LOR even though the lady didn't cleary state it.
  9. Guys, this is just public service. i called one of the departments and realized that there's a mistake. an important deadline for funding was coming up so i called just to clear my head and lo and behold one of my documents(u guessed right LOR) was missing. Yup. just like that. they emailed me to send it. i sent it and it got lost again. so they just didn't contact me. so its mid-february, a lot of adcoms are coming to peak decision time. it doesn't hurt to call and make sure they have all ur stuff. i took a cold shower after the scare.
  10. ha ha well said buddy!! but I am really dying for that day...

  11. the GRE verbal is not fair to foreigners. i don't blame u. someday the india(and all developing countries) will build their own MITs and Stanfords and won't have to send their kids to foreign land. take heart and good luck.

  12. lol i have the same problem. my former boss was my worst referee. he sent the letter 6weeks after i submitted my application and 24hrs before it was due and was given a waiver to email it from his official email instead of hard copy. and he got my name wrong. and worst of all he wrote the most generic LOR i was expecting. i regret asking him for it. he's my friend but i was surprised and disappointed and i don't intend to ask him for references anymore. i'll ask my supervisor at that job. h
  13. hmm, i'm applying to grad school myself so i wouldn't handicap ur chances. i really don't know why some get in and others don't. i know that a 390 verbal might not help 'cos they might worry about ur English skills, but i really don't know. i think what might hurt u is that they have quotas for international students and a lot of Indian students might out-compete you. i would worry about that more than anything else. so call them and ask specifically about ur low GRE scores. email professors at each of the schools. just create a generic email(bcc) and send it to many professors inquiring about ur 390 verbal score. u have strengths though: work experience with turbines will definitely help u, good GPA too. highlight ur experience with turbines. it'll help. good luck.
  14. The solar energy pioneer SunPower was started by a Electrical engineer PhD from Stanford. Go to the electrical engineering pages of major research universities and find out what the faculty research interests are.
  15. not all phd wannabes have research experience. lots of liberal arts colleges don't have research professors, implies that most of their smart students don't get access to research facilities.
