  1. One of my LOR writers told me that during her application season the quality of her materials improved as she submitted--and she ended up at Johns Hopkins. I hope your outcome is as good as hers!
  2. I don't think it would be obnoxious to call, fall-11. As long as you're diplomatic, I'm sure you'll receive a warm, if not helpful, response.
  3. Congrats to all Delaware acceptees! To any M.A. applicants out there who still haven't received some kind of notification: Ed Larkin (the DGS) just e-mailed to let me know I'm on the wait list. It seems there's still hope!
  4. I didn't apply to Brown, so I'm not familiar with the nuances of the program--but maybe that particular person meant M.A. en route to Ph.D.?
  5. Victorian Village??? Sign me up!!!
  6. Has any implicitly rejected M.A. applicant received official notification? I haven't heard a peep from Delaware, and am curious to know if I'm on some sort of unofficial waitlist or completely out of the running.
  7. I'm not sure that's the case anymore. I know fellowshipers receive around $18,500 (including summer funding), and those whose stipends come through T.A.ing, etc., receive a minimum of $14,000 (without summer funding). I wonder if you're allowed to work as a T.A. in the summer to stack up some more cash?
  8. Harpyemma, I haven't a clue what you've designated as your subfields/research interests, but if they intersect with women's studies at all, I'd take the arrival of your monthly visitor as a harbinger of good things to come!
  9. I was on the verge of making the exact same observation. *high fives sarandipidy* We think alike. I wouldn't take it to heart, cquin. If it's still troubling you later, perhaps there's a professor with whom you can discuss your concerns?
  10. Understandable. Maybe I'll see you in Ohio this fall!
  11. I just checked the English Department's graduate handbook, and it says that the program funds all M.A./Ph.D. students in some way, shape, or form. But it's dated for the 2009-2010 academic year, so I hope that policy still holds. I admire your gumption, TC3--I'm too nervous to call!
  12. Okay, crutch. Hopefully I'll receive something by tomorrow or Tuesday. Did your letter say anything about funding, or did it just confirm your acceptance?
  13. Have any other admitted folks received information via snail mail, e-mail, or phone? This is my first acceptance--EVER--and one of my top choices to boot, so the part of my brain that enjoys torturing me keeps thinking, "what if there's a glitch in the online system and you're actually rejected?" How ridiculous am I???
  14. You're very welcome--glad to hear you like it! That pool one=instant classic. One of my other favorites is the guy "selling" a Jurassic Park car: http://dontevenreply.com/view.php?post=32
  15. Sorry to awkwardly throw that link into the discussion--I didn't read the previous posts beforehand, and therefore didn't notice that the tone of the conversation had changed. My bad. *sends good vibes out to everyone*
  16. Hey, folks--try distracting yourselves with this website that archives joke Craigslist responses. Some reduced me to tears of utter hilarity. http://dontevenreply.com/view.php?post=32
  17. I focus on nineteenth-century transatlantic literature and women writers/gender studies.
  18. Glad to be of assistance. Trust me, I know how emotionally destructive Grad Applications Hell can be--especially since this is my second year to throw myself into the fray. My profile picture is Elizabeth Gaskell, my all-time FAVORITE Victorian writer. She had a prolific literary career; her most well-known works are Mary Barton (1848)--a social criticism novel that illuminates the squalid living conditions of the urban working poor of Manchester--and Cranford (1851)--a book that satirizes the provincial idiosyncrasies of the eponymous fictional rural community. Cranford first appeared in Household Words, a magazine edited by Charles Dickens. While Gaskell published a handful of her works in this periodical, she had regular bicker-fests with Dickens, who often tried to impose constraints on her contributions that would have detracted from their overall quality. I love reading her recaps of their banter because she decidedly refused to kowtow to the all-mighty "Prince of Prose." On more than one occasion, she more or less told him, "I don't give a hoot who you are or what you've published: Keep your word when we make publishing agreements and turn the narcissism down a notch, please." A sassy, intelligent, loveable historical figure, in my humble opinion. Sorry for the tangent--I'm a huge Gaskell freak, so I'm excited to have the opportunity to discuss her with an interested party.
  19. Hey now, how could USC possibly turn down someone whose profile picture is an adorable koala? That displays potential as a literary scholar if I ever saw any.
  20. Hmm. . . I feel a bit better knowing they probably take around 10-12 for English; that's the average number for many programs.
  21. Holy smokes! I wish I'd known those admission stats before I applied. Ah well. The Universe will point me (and the rest of us!) in the right direction, no matter the outcome.
  22. That's certainly possible. I was slightly confused though because USC has historically notified admits around the same time (at least according to the results feed). Ah well. We shall see.
  23. Congrats to the USC acceptee! Does anyone have more information? I feel like there might be more positive notifications on their way judging from old results.
  24. Congrat, byronlover! Iowa has a terrific, terrific program! Oddly enough, it seems we have scarily similar research interests, and mentioned some of the same professors in our SOPs. I guess this means I'm out since they probably don't want two people working on identical topics. . . ah well. Many congratulations to you again. This is a wonderful achievement!
