  1. Congrats to the recent acceptee! Anyone want to claim/share details?
  2. Thanks, byronlover! And again, congrats to you for all of your great acceptance karma!
  3. Just got waitlisted! Finally, some sort of notification.
  4. After all of this suspense, I'm going to be a little cheesed off if it turns out that I'm an "outlier" rejection whose ISIS status took longer to roll over to "not accepted."
  5. Thanks, wild_rose. Oh boy, my nerves are going crazy! EDIT: Also, did your ISIS status change?
  6. Yes, I spoke to Claire Fox--but I've never received an e-mail directly from her. When I sent her the message requesting a meeting, she forwarded it to the graduate admin, who keeps her calender. Maybe give e-mailing/calling the graduate admin a shot?
  7. Whoa. A waitlist just went up. Anyone care to claim and/or share details?
  8. Hmm. That's interesting. I had a meeting with the DGS to ask some questions about the program, and she said that all Ph.D. admits received some kind of funding. But I imagine your name's at the top of the list for money, byronlover, considering your fellowship nomination.
  9. Thanks! Same to you!
  10. Maybe this is what's going on in the admissions department. . .
  11. Anyone else still in Iowa limbo?
  12. I called again this morning to find out I'm on the waitlist! Woo! It seems 300 folks applied for 15 slots--same ol' story.
  13. Just called--no answer. Dangit.
  14. Hmm. I guess I'll just sit tight then.
  15. I still haven't heard anything either way. Did she say the department would notify the rest soon?
  16. Mine still reads "In Progress." Here's to hoping they tear the bandage off quickly.
  17. The cash comment made me laugh out loud. Thanks for the chuckle.
  18. If it does work, tell me your secret!
  19. Thanks, woolfie! Same to you!
  20. Anyone else surprised by the lack of news this week?
  21. I'm right there with you. I have a great offer already, so I truly have no reason to complain. But, like you, I'm of the school of thought that believes in waiting to accept/decline until all the results are in. I see a previous UConn wait-lister on the results board reports not receiving any sort of notification. Perhaps an e-mail is in order?
  22. Same here. Did they give a notification date approximation in any application confirmation e-mails?
  23. Amen, bigdgp! We're on the same page for sure.
  24. Well, I still think canonical literary figures, like Dickinson, hold a place (however small) in the minds of the masses. Even though many Ohioans (or Americans for that matter) haven't perused a volume of Dickinson's poetry, that doesn't mean her work's impact is negligible. How many folks have actually read Shakespeare, but still recognize his contributions as culturally significant? I don't mean to equate Dickinson's reputation with Shakespeare's, but I think it's easier to use a more well-known figure like Dickinson to show how research in the humanities can lead to important discoveries. EDIT: Yes, as an aspiring humanities scholar, I'm biased in asserting the significance of Emily Dickinson (who I'm using as a general example to illustrate ways in which literary scholarship proves dynamic)--but I don't think I need to argue for the importance of humanities research as a whole for the purposes of this discussion. Clearly, all of us in the literature forum find the humanities inherently valuable, or we wouldn't waste our time pursuing them at the graduate level.
  25. But Ohio DOES benefit from research papers that aren't "lost in drawers"--i.e. those us academic folks bust our butts to polish and perfect for conferences and other academic engagements. What's more, funding research enables the RECOVERY of misplaced scholarship, literature, etc. I'm thinking specifically of Emily Dickinson's poems, which someone actually found in a desk drawer years after her death. Take THAT, John Kasich!
