Well I'm going to continue the cheeky derailing of this thread Well, it seems like they're quite flexible -and there's a great overlap in the faculty anyway, so branching into Comp Lit if your interests lead you there should be an option. And I have heard many people say that you tend to stand stronger if you start in a national lit department because it generally reflects some more concrete skills. The new person they're getting is Sarah Wells, whose work I am not familiar with, but it looks interesting. Not sure which department she is joining. Regardless, I'm sure you'll have a wonderful time there! Yeah, I am a bit worried about the funding, especially the three year part, though they said people are usually able to extend it, but it's always nice to have something more concrete when you're planning on moving across the world You're probably right about the actual amounts, they were just a little more cryptic in my funding letter, but it's definitely a relief that it can be done. Re the off topic Hahaha, I'm still not very good at articulating my field of proposed research but I'm interested in foundational fiction and texts from the border regions and how they shape/have shaped our socio-cultural identity specifcally questions of gender, normatiity and nationality, regionally I'm interested in Latin America (specifically Mexico and the Southern Cone) and South Asia. What's your area of interest? Also, I'm from Denmark ,) -

Yep, the Comp Lit department, partially working on Lat Am lit Are you working on Lat Am or peninsular? (I was told they're getting a new Lat Am scholar this year, so if that's your thing then that's something to look forward to). I got a three year funding package with a good fellowship for the first year but then two years of TA where they cannot guarantee more than 38%, which would cover tuition, health benefits and then I think $5500 or something which doesn't sound like a lot. Like you I'm an international student and as I know there'll be restrictions on where we work I'm not sure that this is feasible for me... Thanks for the info about housing etc I hope it all works out for you financially, Madison seems like a fantastic place (despite the political situation) and you're right, you probably can get by on a relatively small stipend -
I have no particular place to post this but I had to share somehow.... I went to a "Queer and Now" late night and the V&A, I totally hadn't checked what events were on so imagine my excitement when it turned out there was a talk with Jack Halberstam. Why did I not apply to USC? Only an hour and my head was buzzing!

If you don't mind me asking what kind of stipend are you getting? I got in with finding for three years but after the first year I'll be on TAships that can apparently be as low as 5000-6000 dollars if I understand it correctly which strikes me as extremely low. That said I've not researched what the living costs are yet so maybe it is actually possible. -
Personally I think my implied rejections have felt more like a bullet through the chest when they've been converted to the real kind but I still agree with you. It's quick and the pain subsides relatively quickly. (that being said I'm still going to use today's rejection from Cornell as an excuse to eat ice cream and watch Yeh Jawaani Hai Deewani)

I just emailed Cornell and got a lightning-fast response: rejection But I still think I'm better off knowing. -

Thanks for the info! I guess I should try and email them then, I think at this point it will be better for my mental state if I can just let go of that dream once and for all. ManyYearsLater I'm in exactly the same boat as you. I've been trying to not read anything into their silence but argh, I think when I get the rejection I'll realise that I have been building castles in the sky this whole time. -

Huge congratulations iwontbelyeveit!!! What wonderful news!!! HelloThisIsDog I'm sorry about the bad news, but you never know about that waitlisting, which is very impressive anyway. Also, sorry to pry even further but did you email Cornell or did they email you? -
Keeping fingers corssed for you! And sending positive vibes! You're probably less rusty than you think (and it's reading abilities that matter anyway). Just get in front of that webcam and knock their socks off!

What happened to Cornell? Did you eventually heart back from them? Iwontbelyeveit I'll keep my fingers crossed for you. I haven't heard from my interview place either, they said late Feb, so hopefully I'll know by Saturday at least, even if I right now think it's a rejection -

Tell me about it. Considering that rejections tend to be completely generic and that they no doubt know who they're going to reject almost as soon as they know who they'll accept I really don't get why they're leaving us hanging for so long... -

Did anyone else apply to UCLA? And if you did, have you heard anything? I think if I haven't heard anything by the end of this week I'll email them, it'll have been a full three month since their deadline and nothing on the gc results board indicates that they've made their offers already. SubmarineReflection, I haven't heard anything but as someone posted about bench in the shortlist a while ago my impression is that people still in the running well here have heard by now. -

You rock mollifiedmolloy!!! Congratulations! And yes, also congrats to anonymous UPenn admit! -
Best of luck with your interview! I've only had one interview and it was with the DGS of the programme, so I don't know what the norm is, i guess it varies from institution to institution. I don't think you're expected to name drop or flash your language skills overly (but other people with more experience might be able to tell you more), so long as you seem confident and know your stuff you should be fine.

Someone posted an acceptance a couple of weeks ago, so personally I'm considering it an implied rejection. (I've applied to them once before and they're beyond tardy with their rejection emails). Someone posted a thread about having been shortlisted for Stanford, and an old comment on the results board refers to an email where it says that only shortlisted candidates are considered for an offer. Of course we have no visible evidence of an admission on the results board yet, but I think this is another implied rejection And yes, congrats to whoever got accepted to Princeton! And good luck to you U Chicago people -
