  1. Overall, UMich appears to be a better choice as it a better place to study engineering. My concern is however about the MS Robotics program at UMich. They admitted their first batch of students to the MS Robotics program last year (F14) while UPenn has a seven year old program. How much of a difference does this make? Is this as big an issue as I feel it is?
  2. I recently got a rejection from CMU RI for the MS program. I have been accepted at another pretty good program already, so I am not too worried. However, I am planning on doing a PhD immediately after my MS, and CMU would of course be one of the choices for that. Therefore, given that, does it make sense to ask them for specific rejection reasons? If yes, should I mention the stuff I have mentioned in this post (like acceptance at another program + desire to do PhD within next 2-3 years)
  3. What are your preferences? What places have you applied to?
  4. Quick followup: does that apply for MS programs as well? I am in a similar situation as the OP.
  5. This is my (and my family's) first time going through the American/European application process, so I am not sure as to how the complete process works and what to do at this point. Firstly, I have received a decision letter from University Of Pennsylvania which is asking me to take a decision before date X, and to submit a deposit to reserve my seat in the program. The exact language is: Q: Is this the standard official letter language? Do I really lose my place if I don't accept before Y? Now, my indecision at this point is due to two of my applications having a decision timeline 1-1.5 months after X. I am hoping for significantly better offers from at least one of the remaining two, however I can't be too sure (obviously). I have submitted 4 applications total, and I wouldn't want to lose this chance. So, options that I see here are: -- Accept now, wait till March, if I get a better offer, accept that and inform UPenn at that point. Q: What repercussions may I expect in the future? I may end up applying for a PhD later on to UPenn, irrespective of current decision. -- Decline. Wait. I don't want to lose an offer in the hope of something that may not come. -- Accept now and stick with it. The program is pretty good. However. financially, I will be leaving the school with a big loan, which pretty much kills any chances of doing a PhD as I will have to most certainly take up a non-academia job to pay it back. The other schools (if I'm accepted) should offer better financial aid/support than UPenn. Are there other options? What should I do? ---- The programs are two MS, and remaining two MSE. I intend to a PhD immediately after.
  6. Is there any specific survey/ranking for universities, and particularly grad schools / research departments, that is considered better than others? Or used more?
  7. If I have received an official acceptance letter for a Master's program, is it alright/safe to ask (strongly) for financial aid even if the offer did not provide any?
  8. Thanks! Heard that, but I also read that international applicants tend to get interviewed more often than not. I was going to do that in couple of days once I hear back from one other program that I applied to. Been running into a lot of that :/ Thanks again!
  9. I received an acceptance from UPenn for Master's in Robotics. I was not interviewed or contacted since I submitted my application. Is this the normal process? My bachelors is from a relatively well known institute in my country. Also, does it make sense to ask for scholarships/work-study positions now, or after I decide? Has anybody gotten, or know of anybody who got, scholarships for this program?
  10. Never mind. Got an email. Got IN! I cant believe it.
  11. I applied to the Masters in Robotics program at UPenn in time for the Nov 15th deadline. The decisions were to come by last week December, then it was shifted to Jan 5th-11th week, and the last update says they'll be sending it over the "next several days" from 11th Jan. Has anyone got their letters so far? Gotten in?
