  1. All of my applications were reaches by design. The job market out there is so gnarly that almost all of my professors advocate the 'go big or go home' approach. That being said, a lot of the professors that I want to work with have degrees from programs outside the top 30 or even 50. If I don't get in anywhere I might apply again, but I'll definitely take a quick break from academia first.
  2. It seems as if Emory has a formal interview process by the number of interviews posted on the status board. Does anyone know if that is the case?
  3. My focus is 19th century US history, but it's fair to say that I'm danger close to coming across as a military historian. The professors I mentioned in my SOP were William Blair and Carol Reardon. As an Americanist who toes the line with military history, I'm just hoping I don't come off as another Civil War buff.
  4. When UVA didn't post anything by the 31st I just resigned myself to the fact that I won't hear from anyone until after the 14th at the earliest. Oddly enough it's lowered my level of nervousness, although I still can't stop checking the results compulsively. Good luck!
  5. I have a kid as well. My 1st try at college was a colossal failure, but then I went into the Army and after getting out have done particularly well. I'm currently in a War Studies programme, although I'm applying to U.S. History programs back in the states. Here's to hoping that doing an MLitt in a different field won't kill my chances of getting into a non-military history program.
  6. No interview at UPenn for me either.
  7. Mine says the same
  8. I can see that course of action being completely appropriate regardless of what news you receive. Good idea Heimat Historian's sister, I think that bottle of Dalwhinnie 15 is finally gonna make its way home!
  9. Sure is quiet out there... Too quiet...
  10. Congrats! All those positive vibes you've been putting out (and probably an insane amount of late nights and hard work) are paying off!
  11. Congrats!
  12. I agree Heimat Historian. I'm not sure if I'm expecting too much out of UVA'S dates last year and UNC (according to another prediction) or it's just strangely quiet out there so far today. Best of luck everyone!
  13. Looking back at the dates for UVA they seem to consistently admit (at least a first round) on 30/31 January.
  14. No interview from UPenn for me either. Fortunately my coursework has me so slammed that I can't just sit and stare at the results page all day long like I want to.
  15. I haven't heard anything from U Penn, and I haven't seen anything posted either. FYI the rolling admissions at the University of Glasgow's War Studies MLitt program (2014) got back to me in three weeks, and they said that was a longer wait than they would have liked. Completely spoiled me. Good luck everyone!
  16. Same boat man.
  17. It looks like UVA pretty consistently notifies people on 30/31 January over the past couple years... Why did I have to start obsessing over this site this week while I've got two presentations and two essays due?
  18. UNC Chapel Hill just posted its first acceptance. It was by email from a POI.
  19. I'm interested in 19th century U.S. Military history and counterinsurgency during the Civil War, but my MLitt dissertation will be on the formation of British Bomb Disposal in WWII.
  20. 2nd acceptance to Ohio State just posted. Congrats! It wasn't me. I believe they received an email. My status is still Pending
  21. http://www.uwgb.edu/careers/skills/interviewing-graduate-school.asp This is a pretty decent list of questions to expect during interviews. Be prepared for follow up questions to your answers particularly for the difficult questions like, what is your greatest weakness. Also, having questions about the program interviewing you shows that you have taken an active interest in their program.
  22. I'm interested in an answer to your question as well. I would start, however, by rereading your entire application and particularly your statement of purpose essay. Their knowledge of you is limited to that information, so be prepared to answer specific questions about your essay and further develop why your interests and experiences would work well with the professors you wish to work with. I've got to imagine that reading the most recent articles by those Professors would help as well unless the professor mentions a different focus in his or her online bio. Best of luck!
  23. 19th Century U.S. and Military History Applied to: UNC Chapel Hill, UVA, Penn, Penn State, Ohio State, Emory
