condolences Chiqui. How'd you find out?

telkanuru: I agree with the top 30 approach in that it seems to combine prestige (for future employment) with potential for admission. In ufact, that was the model I used this cycle. Sometimes it just doesn't work out, and you have to reassess your own effort (as I'm having to do now).

My undergrad thesis advisor was working on a search for new faculty as I was deciding on which programs I wanted to apply to. When we talked about the importance of working with a big name, he said that – in terms of making hiring decisions in smaller departments – there is a decent chance that a search committee will not have heard of the big name in a given specialty, and that the prestige of the program made a greater impression prior to the start of actual interviews.

Any bets on who lowers the boom next? My money is on either Penn or Ohio State, but maybe that's just wishful thinking.

I wonder how much of a role the weather plays each year. It seemed as if snow days made for a few delays.

For folks wondering about UNC Chapel Hill: Adverse Weather Alert - UNC will extend closure until 1 p.m., then reopen on regular schedule

I don't know why this week is pulling all of the cheesy 80s-ness out of me, but it really is. Also really appreciate all of the support. It's something that I definitely want to take into the next cycle.

Having pretty much written off or been rejected by everyone but Ohio State, this is how I'm feeling at the moment: https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=HGhP3p6lI3U

Rejection notifications are up for Virginia.

While I know that I shouldn't write off a programme until I get official word, it's hard not to look at the results board and realize that I'm just waiting for bad news at this point. The Emory rejection was a bummer but also a relief to finally hear something. I think that this has forced me to reevaluate the type of historian I would like to become. Military history may not be marketable at the moment, but it's finally clear to me (I'm sure it's completely apparent to committees) that, that is what I am. Time to rewrite the ol SOP and find the right POIs

Does anyone have any info or guesses on whether Ohio State will send out any more offers of admission?
-
Congrats! I have a friend who absolutely loves it there.

So, it looks like UPenn has sent out its acceptances. According to previous years, the waitlist should go out tomorrow, and rejections will have to wait until March. Congrats to the folks who got in!
-
UPenn acceptance is on the board. via email from POI.

Completely unrelated post: Walked into my advisor's office to talk about the tactical risks and benefits of using explosives in insurgency since 1890... Walked out talking about relative understandings of time in relation to physical and political proximity to conflict... this requires beer. I hope that I am able some day to warp the mind of a young postgraduate just like what just happened to me.

Just felt like this week needs it's own soundtrack... and amazing hair. https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=9jK-NcRmVcw

Helluva way to start the week.

That's awesome! Except for the stress part. But that puts you in the running.

Have all of the Emory applicants out there heard back yet? I see acceptances and rejections on the board, but I've heard nothing, and I'm trying to resist the urge to contact the department.
-
That escalated quickly...

For the person looking for info about UNC on the results board, it looks like 5 admits went out already. UNC doesn't necessarily have the best funding packages, so there's a chance to get off of a waitlist, but I've basically written that application off. UNC is also fairly slow to send out rejections.

For what it's worth I do find that ignoring the nature of one of the most powerful forces of change in history to be more than a little silly.

Considering that I could be fairly pegged as a military historian, I do find it frustrating that military history is not only out of fashion but actively discouraged, particularly because we have been at war for over a decade. That being said, I think that the smaller niches and sub-fields have been neglected to the detriment of more traditional fields. For example, I would find a history of WWII deficient that did not include the effects it had on gender roles or include the contributions of half of the population. I tend to consider conflict as a remarkable primary source generator, and an opportunity to see how different segments of society mobilize or resist warfare. Essentially war forces people to put their money where their mouth is (while frequently putting pen to paper) and shows how different societies respond to a variety of stressors. The more facets of a society that have been intensively studied that I can draw upon in my study of war the better. I just wish admissions committees saw military history that way.

If I keep telling myself that I will hear something, anything at all really, back from a school "next week," I've gotta be right at least once between now and May.

I know right? I was at least hoping to have a rejection From Emory by now. Congratulations on the job news Ellebe!
