My top choice school has already assigned me an email address. I won't lie and say I haven't been tempted to actually use it and pretend I've been accepted.

LMAO!  I had a few schools assign me a student id, student email, and set up my passwords so I really can use those emails.  Just seems like they're making IT do extra work for no reason.

Does anyone else kick themselves for not applying to a program? I just found Arizona State's program and they have a faculty member who does exactly what I want and the offer funding. I didn't know about their program until now and their deadline was Dec 1st. Booo. Hopefully I won't need it and I'll get funded offers this round. If Not I guess there is always next year!

There are 3 programs that would have been good fits and in decent locations, but I didn't apply to them because in the past I had and was rejected.  I understand why I was rejected, but this time around I felt it better to start fresh so I didn't consider them.  If I don't get in this season and have to do a 4th application cycle I may reconsider my stance.

Yup, knowing that notifications have been sent out is the worst. If I were on the admissions committee, I would just send out everything at the same time. We can only wish...

I lost my mind earlier and decided to make a fake email account to email the admissions director. I feel like l'm the craziest one here.

Omg you didn't?!  What on earth did you say?!  I pondered emailing them, but decided not to bother.  Good news seems to arrive early and not so good news arrives eventually so rushing it doesn't seem to have any benefits.

  4. Lol you're not alone @flop because I was doing the same thing.  What I can't seem to make sense of is a few schools I've applied to have held interview weekends that I was not invited to (bummed, but life goes on) and some applicants have already received rejections, yet my status still says "under review."  If I wasn't chosen for an interview then it would seem I'm to be rejected, but then why not just send one?  The delay seems odd and it would also be odd if they were still reviewing my materials without an interview.  Just seems like unnecessarily dragging out the process.

Do these figures include pre-doctoral debt? For example, I know a lot of people do unfunded masters as a way of upping their chances for PhD programs, so that might be where some of the debt is coming from. I was the poster who previously mentioned that I would have been $140k in the hole if I had completed my unfunded masters. I actually quit the program and am only $60k in now, but still....

I was wondering this too.  Sure debt is still debt, but I would be interested in seeing how much of it is from unfunded or partially funded Master's degrees in comparison to just PhDs or PsyDs.

Posts like this terrify the crap out of me. I feel like I am so unprepared going into applications next cycle and I'm honestly panicking trying to figure out how to increase my chances.

I do have a semirelated question though. You mentioned that this was your third time applying - what kind of work were doing in the interim? I know a lot of people say to get a research position but depending on geography, research positions don't necessarily pay the bills (or alternatively, you might not have a good enough background to get a paid position so you have to take on volunteer positions, like I'm doing). What are people's thoughts about working an unrelated full time job and doing research on the side? Does this look shitty or should I really be looking for full-time research positions?!

I don't think its a bad thing to work full time and do research on the side.  I have been lucky enough to find a full time job in my field, but otherwise would not have felt "less than" working outside of my field to keep a roof over my head.  Any professor or department that doesn't get that isn't worth the next 5 years of my life.  I will say it has been harder to find research opportunities because I am limited to after work and weekend hours and I find many labs have standard weekday hours or they question your commitment if you already have a good paying job.

    Hi All,

I figure a lot of you are more well-traveled than me. I didn't get on my first plane til I was 21 (5 years ago). I've only been on two trips via airplane, total. My family never traveled much. I've lived in PA all my life, and the farthest west I've been is Nashville, farthest east New Jersey, farthest north was New York, farthest south was North Carolina.

Sooo ... the fact that I'm visiting six states over the span of just as many weeks is pretty amazing for me.

    It's also a bit daunting.

I was wondering: What sort of essential travel tips would you give to the unseasoned traveler?

I was over 21 the first time I took a plane anywhere and still haven't traveled much.  I would suggest getting a neck pillow.  Those seats are terrible and your muscles will thank you for the added support.  Mine was so comfy I was able to sleep quite comfortably with it.  Bring hand sanitizer, kleenex, a non perishable snack, and something to read on the plane.  On your layovers don't sit down the entire time.  It is very important that you walk around and stretch to keep your circulation going.

I read something before that the reason they weren't keeping female cast members was because Mindy Kaling didn't want non Mindy Kaling girls on the show so I think she just wrote them out or just made them disappear completely like her friends from season 1. lol!

What else do you watch? Baby Daddy? Black-ish? How to Get Away with Murder? Elementary? 2 Broke Girls? I feel like we have the same taste in shows. lol

Well from what I've gathered after reading her two books she doesn't have tons of female friends in real life.  I don't think that's a bad thing, just maybe its not easy to find women she jives with and that could spill over into work.  Also the entertainment world is pretty cutthroat and she worked hard to design and launch the show.  I kinda get why she may want the focus on her rather than doing that whole help a sister out thing.

Lets see other shows I'm digging right now, meaning go out of my way to watch on time, include....Quantico, Criminal Minds, How to Get Away with Murder, Grey's Anatomy, The Big Bang Theory, New Girl, Younger, The Mysteries of Laura, The Fosters, and Young & Hungry.  A couple of those may change because the plot lines have just gotten odd.  Like what's up with New Girl?  I get that Zooey had a baby, but the show is weird without her and I don't like Megan Fox at all.  I have this weird feeling The Big Bang Theory is winding down which is irritating because Shamy just got interesting.  And that whole brother switcheroo on Young & Hungry was icky.  Those tv execs need to quit messing with my crack!

Ohhh I watch Life in Pieces too. It's like Modern Family but not completely, and I also like Modern Family. Lol. Ah, yes, if it's not obvious yet, I am Raaawr and I am a couch potato. Lol!

I wish they didn't turn Jeremy into a kind of joke though. He was decent at the start then he just started turning into this mess. Whatever happened to the mindy project. Lol. Are you all caught up in season 4?

Yep I've seen every episode at least a dozen times lol.  I'm curious to see what is next for Jeremy's character.  Will he go back to being a ladies man?  Will we see his father around more?

I'm also wondering if they're going to keep Jody and Colette.  The show seems to have a habit of introducing new characters that seem like a great addition, not using them enough, and then getting rid of them because they don't fit.  All of Mindy's gal pals met that fate as did most of the female employees at Schulman and Associates.

Life in Pieces is also hilarious.  It's like Modern Family meets Parenthood.

I have to rewatch the first 3 seasons lol. I guess you're right that this season they let Danny be real Danny, like a Danny you'd meet in real life instead of tv Danny from the first 3 seasons that you might still kinda like. Lol. I also noticed that most of mindy's friends from the first season just disappeared out of the blue. Hahaha. And Jeremy's character really went a bad route. He became such a joke. I think it's because they need to make Danny look better than Jeremy so it would make sense for mindy to end up with him and not Jeremy. What do you think? Lol

You might be on to something there.  I also think they had to develop Jeremy more because the guy who played Peter (still not clear on why he left) is gone and the guy who played Adrian (probably expected to be the new Peter) left to star in Life in Pieces.  Morgan isn't going anywhere, but his character is pretty well developed and Mindy would never go for him.

Rejected from 12 schools for clinical psychology

4.0 GPA  (undergrad and grad), 155 Q, 161 V, 5 years of research experience, 3 pubs (2 first author), 12 posters, amazing letters of recommendation

I'm going to try again next year but I wish I knew what I did wrong or what they want. I feel like all I've been doing the last 5 years is taking every opportunity I have been given and I don't understand why it isn't paying off. This was my third time applying and I thought it would be my last.

Have you all received any input or advice from faculty other than just try again?

I'm sorry, I know how much that stings.  I do think its good you're motivated to apply again next year.  Based on the stats you've posted I'd say you look like a promising candidate on paper, but as a fellow applicant I'm certainly no expert on what adcoms want.  How was your AW score on the GRE?  Some programs may place a fair amount of importance on that.

Getting back to your original question..... in past application cycles when I needed feedback here are some of the suggestions I was given:

    1)  Diversify your experience.  Meaning challenge yourself to gain clinical experience in unfamiliar populations and perhaps even in groups that might make you uncomfortable initially.  Also in terms of research, work on projects outside your interests or even in a different department.  Sure your primary interest may be in widgets, but you can learn a lot from working on a project focusing on poppets.

    2)  Keep reworking your SOP because it likely won't be any good until the dozenth rewrite.  Have a lot of people review it, not your friends and family who will just blow smoke up your rear but people who will rip it to shreds.

    3)  If you had to do a PS then be careful of disclosing too much.  We've all had our struggles, but sometimes the crazy is best left in the box.

    4)  When choosing which schools to apply to be reasonable.  Yes look at research fit, but also consider how competitive the program is.  There's nothing wrong with throwing your hat in the ring at top tier programs, but more of your applications should be for mid tier programs to increase your odds.

    5)  In terms of research fit you want to have focused interests without being too narrow.  Too narrow can imply you aren't open to some of the broader projects a professor or department may have coming up or that you don't want to be challenged.

Sorry that line really bugged me. Some people don't want to get married but still have kids. I know it's a TV show we are talking about, but that seems a bit judgmental to me.

I'm not generalizing to the whole world nor am I judging real peoples choices.  Both characters in the show have routinely expressed a preference for being married and having a family in a more traditional sense throughout the show.  So them trying to step outside of that hasn't been working for them despite their best efforts, its like a square peg round hole kind of thing.  Is that a bad thing?  No, it just isn't who they are as tv characters.

I don't mind the Mindy & Danny thing. They're cute but for me it's because Danny understands Mindy for all her quirks and accepts her but this season Danny became too controlling of her. Like the whole time they built up the relationship and now it's unraveling. I stopped watching halfway through the season cause I couldn't handle seeing Danny become that person. lol. I'm talking like I'm emotionally invested. haha!

Nope nope nope!  Danny has never accepted Mindy as she was.  He's always been a grumpy old man who complained about everything about her.  I think the writers were hoping we'd forget this, but if you go back to the earlier seasons you see it all over again.  Then think about how he treats his mom and his ex wife, always controlling everything because according to him everyone else is stupid and he knows best.  That's why I was saying right from the beginning that their relationship wasn't believable.  In real life all the coworkers would have slapped Mindy and reminded her that Danny is a huge ass and she needs someone who gets her and thinks she's sexy.

For me Danny being even worse this season was the writers finally letting him be himself instead of trying to force him into being a person he isn't.  This was painfully obvious when he kept stalling on the whole marriage thing.  If Mindy were truly his type and the love of his life they'd have been married ages ago and not playing house with a kid out of wedlock.  Then all of a sudden he thinks maybe he doesn't need to get married?  Yeah right.  Then he's like sure we'll get married, but we can wait until Mindy comes to her senses and changes to be someone he knows she can't be?  Yeah right.  So even though he's awful and I hate him this season I like that he's doing his thing.  Good grief...I am so emotionally invested lmao!

  14. So funny you say that because I have been angry since they put Mindy & Danny together.  It just isn't believable and single Mindy constantly dating weirdos was way more entertaining.  I'm struggling to stick with the show now that there's a baby, but ehhhh who knows.

  15. This thread has gotten so entertaining :)  I don't remember waiting being so frustrating when I applied before so I'm not exactly sure what is different this time around.  As of right now I'm assuming a handful of rejections will arrive in the next week or so since I know interview invites have gone out.  Sure that's sad, but at the same time I just can't be bothered to get bent out of shape either.  I'll end up going where I'm supposed to go.  Otherwise I'm waiting without wine because I'm on painkillers and mixing the two is a no no.  I'm passing the hours with movies, naps, reading, short walks, and web surfing until I can return to work.

    1) This is a US program (I've updated this in the post). There doesn't seem to be a break in his academic position, but I don't know and don't know how to ask about paternity leave, illness and sabbaticals. I am definitely considering asking him where he is headed in terms of career pursuit.

Maybe you could ask generally about the length of time it takes to gain full professorship.  As in say from your observation it seems like most faculty reaches full professorship in 7-8 years and you're wondering if this program is different or if other personal choices might change that timeframe and you wonder what the advantages might be.  This could be part of your own research regarding your possible career path rather than you simply being nosy if phrased right.

  17. My responses are from the perspective of an applicant researching POIs to apply to.....

    1)  Is this a Canadian or a US program?  I ask only because there may be a difference in the "usual" time to gain full professorship.  Also did this professor take some time off.....maternity/paternity leave, illness, sabbatical to work on a project outside of academia, caring for child/parent/spouse, etc?  Does this professor also run a private practice?  If so maybe they don't want full professorship and like the balance they currently have.  It is very appropriate for you to ask a POI where they see their career going in the next 5-10 years.

    2)  This would be a huge negative for me, probably bigger than the other concerns you've expressed.  If you won't be going on internship until your 7th or 8th year that's a lot of years you're not out establishing your career, paying into retirement, etc.  If clinical hours are being sited as a reason for the lengthy stay then what is the program doing to remedy this?  Are they working to create additional opportunities for students to earn hours?  Are they modifying the existing curriculum so that students can start their hours in their 1st year rather than waiting until a later year?

Regarding the funding, I'd also want to know what's being done to remedy this.  Are the professors not applying to enough grants or just not earning enough grants?  Are students expected to apply for some grants on their own and might be struggling with this process?  Are there outside fellowships or externships that aren't being taken advantage of?  Is the department open to establishing externships in the community since those could provide both hours and funding?

    3)  If the POI has no current grants, doesn't appear to have done much publishing recently, and their most recent students haven't published much then what exactly have they been doing?  Were they funded to write a book?  Did they take on a heavier courseload?  Were they consulting in the community?  Your primary question here should be how will this POI fund you?

That is the same way I feel. Just because a temporary company is supportive, it does not mean you need to give them more than two weeks notice. I read a few articles that those who give the company more than 2 weeks notice, the company will retaliate and find a reason to fire a person or even make the individual miserable. I rather not take any chances and leave on a good and professional note without involving my outside work life with a company.

Now there may be some states or employment contracts that require a person to give more notice, but that doesn't apply to my situation.  For me 2 weeks is a professional courtesy and I wouldn't feel right with anything less since I'm not being treated horribly.  I also took into consideration that if things were different and management were to do layoffs its likely I wouldn't be given any notice let alone 2 whole weeks.  Leaving on my terms means not only that I control when my last paycheck comes, but also how long I have access to my benefits.

  19. My employer doesn't know that I've applied for graduate school and I won't be saying anything until its time to put in notice that I'm leaving.  The job I'm in is a dead end and management knows this, yet they don't want to hire people that don't plan to stay forever.  I get that it costs money to hire and train, but if there's no incentive for people to stick around for more than 1-2 years then either accept that this is a stepping stone job or create incentives.

So here's how I've handled the time off.  I didn't take a single vacation day that way I'd have plenty of time for interviews and to deal with relocation stuff.  I did not explain why I wanted to take time off, just put in the request in advance and did my job otherwise.  Should I get an offer this season then I'll give my employer 2 weeks notice and nothing more.  My job will be wrapped up properly so that anyone needing to cover for me until someone is hired won't be overwhelmed.
