  1. I'm in computer science. And female. So the number one thing I get for some weird reason is "wow, you must be so smart!" Maybe I should tell them that anyone can apply
  2. So I have a chat Saturday, but I called it an "other" and not an "interview," because really it's a professor who has a few specific questions for me. I think many people are classifying those sorts of chats as interviews, which I guess is technically still correct, but it's not a formal, university-driven interview like other programs, so there's really not much you can infer from getting or not getting one.
  3. I finally heard from a school! And it was the one school I thought would totally just throw out my application and laugh at me: MIT. I'm supposed to talk to a really cool professor this weekend. By "cool professor" I mean he does awesome research. I don't know anything about him IRL. I'm simultaneously excited and terrified and have had just about every thought mentioned in this thread over the past seven hours. Good luck, all!
  4. I had a dream last night that I got my decision from UW on a piece of paper in that weird material schools print transcripts on. There were three bubbles on it, one for accepted, one for rejected, and one for this weird word I'd never heard of before. The word I'd never heard of before was checked and I was really confused.
  5. Probably not totally related as it's not as stigmatized, but I'm a sub-elite runner, and I have a very public internet persona around running, which is linked to my real name. I left all that up, and I mention my elite development club on my CV (at the bottom). It has nothing to do with my research interests. But I know a lot of professors who have also been sub-elite runners at one point or another (including my undergrad advisor, who was actually probably more along the lines of elite), and I figure what will probably happen is the professors who know what I'm talking about will think it's cool or a connection point, while the professors who don't care about running will just ignore it. My undergrad advisor had all of his running accomplishments on his CV, and that's one reason we clicked so well
  6. Note to self: Don't conceive babies between May 1st and July 15th.
  7. Do law shows include The Good Wife? I always felt like that show targeted middle-aged women, so I feel a little weird being obsessed with it. My guiltiest pleasure is probably Pokemon. It's 7:00 AM and I'm about to play it for an hour while I ride the stationary bike. At least the stationary bike part is productive, I guess.
  8. Definitely. I had a 4.0 undergrad with 132 first-author publications an a 169 quant and got rejected from every school I applied to. Really, though, that's what it feels like everyone else is saying to me. No wonder academics get hit so hard with imposter syndrome.
  9. A few people have been accepted to insert school here, therefore we have all been rejected by all schools we've applied for
  10. I applied in PL and haven't heard yet. But I think these sorts of posts just provoke unnecessary anxiety: http://www.cs.washington.edu/prospective_students/grad/application/faq#app_status UW does not interview. My guess is that people are calling other interactions with POIs "interviews."
