I think you can get excited about the courses, etc. etc. but what I believe to be true of getting accepted into a PhD program is to meet as many professors as you can; especially the ones you want to work with for your PhD, well before you apply for your PhD. If I had to prioritize it would be attend the talks/workshops/seminars where the profs you're interested in will be at, or simply just go to their office (yes, even if that means flying down there on your own dime). Personally, I think much of everything else is a bit of waste of time, meeting them, impressing them is what's going to get them in. Your CV, GREs, writing samples are too abstract - people decide within a few minutes of meeting someone whether they want to work with them for several years. That's my two cents. You can of course take it or leave it, but if I can give any piece of advice, do well in your course, of well, but focus most on writing the best dissertation, and meet as many professors as you can that you want to work with, especially if you feel like you may not be as competitive as others.

SSHRC Doctoral Fellowship/CGS Doctoral Scholarship 2017/2018
CrunchCrunch replied to SadieLou's topic in The Bank
You are my hero. I just logged in through the doctoral portal and I can see the form there, while I cannot see the form when I login through the general portal. What a stupid system. As yes, you have reassured me that there is absolutely no correlation. -

I don't know, maybe there's something to this. I'm applying for the 2-year grant and I don't see see the Michael Smith Foreign Supplement form when I log in...So perhaps if it's showing up it means you're at least in the system for any of their awards? Just speculating here, obviously will be able to confirm in a few weeks. As a side note, what a shitty way to find out! -
SSHRC Doctoral Fellowship/CGS Doctoral Scholarship 2017/2018

I think Michael Smith is only for those eligible for CGS; not for those who are only eligible for the regular SSHRC scholarship. So, if you don't qualify anyway for CGS then you wouldn't quality for Michael Smith. That's my understanding at least, I could be wrong. Or, maybe if you don't have it then you may still be qualified for SSHRC but not CGS? Best not to read too much into it. -
This is my 3rd time applying, so keep at it for those who are going to resubmit.

email just came in. 12:22pm. Beautiful words "There is no need for you to reapply for the upcoming May 1st deadline at this time." Good luck to everyone.

I know, I just feel somehow it's being a bit insensitive, knowing all these people are obsessively checking. Don't worry, I am there, but I don't want chuckles. I want results.

It's a holiday in Canada tomorrow.
-
Canada. Well, yes, I just mean, don't tweet unless it's something important, like emails have been sent out.
-
Also, is anyone else annoyed by the tweets from Wenner Gren? Just saying, if you have time to tweet, you have time to send out the results...

Is Friday not a holiday in America?

SSHRC Doctoral Fellowship/CGS Doctoral Scholarship 2016-2017
CrunchCrunch replied to rugox's topic in The Bank
Called SGS and they weren't willing to give up the information...curious that people are getting different information -
At least we have this forum for support...Good luck.
-
rejected as well. score was 2.7 as well. I think you need pretty close to 1 to get funded. Who's reapplying for Nov 1?
-
Maybe you're right. Looking at past responses, people seem to hear on the same day, at least for second round. I'm not going on much here. I heard pretty late too actually, but I wasn't really paying attention at that point. My email came on Aug 5. It's my first time applying so I'm interested in what the reviewers have to say. I feel like a bit of a sadist, as I kind of want to hear extremely harsh criticism.
-
I've heard that as well. My colleague had two reviewers who were totally on board, and one reviewer who ripped it apart.
-
Congrats! It looks like we'll all be hearing back sometime today. Yikes!
-
Thank you! that's super helpful. This is going to be a fun two weeks of waiting. I hear you on the theoretical contribution, that's probably where most people (probably me) will get points docked. It's nice that you got comments back from one reviewer even at the first stage. I like WG's process, mostly because it's independent of reference letters. I don't need that stress and hassle when working away at getting the application done. Thanks for the heads up on the comments, I expect nothing less than some devastating comments regarding the merits of research/theory/everything under the sun. Good luck to you!
-
Only one reviewer provided comments? Did you get a total score or an individual score from each reviewer? I'm curious as this was my first submission, but totally anticipating a resubmit so trying to prepare. How long did you feel like you needed to make the changes, i.e. is two weeks enough to resubmit or did you wait for the next round? Lots of questions, sorry and thanks.

Applying to PhD in Anthropology w/o Anthro Degree
CrunchCrunch replied to ladyoflight17's topic in Anthropology Forum
I applied to an anthro phd program with a masters in health and development, but I have an undergraduate degree in anthropology. What's more important is the topic you want to do research on; if it's a topical fit for the professor, and they're interested in your initial findings from your masters, I don't think it really matters that your masters isn't in anthro. -
Maybe you are not an impressive candidate. Maybe this is not the field for you. A degree doesn't guarantee you a job, especially from a mediocre university (and by that I mean not ivy league). Life is tough, not sure what complaining accomplishes. You do what you can with what you have. Sure, there are institutional problems, like why are so many universities offering and encouraging young people to go to school when they should actually pursue entry level jobs and work their way up, or trade school, or anything else. Yes, it's unfortunate that so many people drink the koolaid and get sucked in. But to say that you deserve a job because you have a Masters, or have a 4.0GPA or a bunch of internships is indicative of a delusional mindset. No one owes you anything. And when did people become too good for retail jobs? Lots of people do a lot of different jobs to get by. Thinking you're above something is probably the reason why you're an off-putting candidate.
-
A government job isn't really hard, as you've pointed out. Why would a professor tell you that and why do you care? Just do what works for you.
-
That's not too bad! It's all about getting to the comments stage right? How did you know you had a good application? I'm just wondering if you were able to identify what you were doing right.

SSHRC Doctoral Fellowship/CGS Doctoral Scholarship 2015-2016
CrunchCrunch replied to crimsoc's topic in The Bank
Not necessarily. I was forwarded but then waitlisted in April (and then nothing came of it).
