  1. Is participating in two different researches, with no connection between them - possible? Common? I have several interests in my field, and think that doing that might be helpful in deciding what to focus on in my future dissertation; and frankly, I generally see positive sides to focusing on more than one narrow research direction if there is such an option.
  2. I saw your acceptance in the results page - and it made me really happy, cause I know how depressing it can be not to be accepted anywhere, really cool!
  3. I'm in a worse situation. Waitlisted in Rutgers and will only have an answer around April21st, which is rather bizzare, since obviously if i have another offer (which I do) I must accept it by April 15th.
  4. Does anyone know what are the differences (if any) between the Lenovo Flex and the Lenovo Flex 2? I found a good deal on a Flex with really good specs, but i'm afraid I am missing something.
  5. I got a reply to my email from Rutgers. Apparently, I am on the waitlist and they'll only be able to update me around the 21st....... slightly problematic, but what can I do?
  6. Still no information from Rutgers, sent Prof. Grimshaw and email a couple of days ago and - nothing.
  7. Does anyone have any experience with these? http://www.dell.com/ca/p/inspiron-13-7347-laptop/pd?ref=PD_OC Their price (in Canada, where I am not located, but my uncle is) is pretty good. And the specs too, of course.
  8. - Working full time till June/July - making two chapters of my thesis into articles I will try to submit - trying to read Ulysses - reading other books for real - trying to sell as much of my things as possible before the move - lots of bureaucracy related with moving to the US - visas, flight tickets and other arrangements - celebrating my last birthday with all my friends (at least for the next few years... ) - Waiting to hear whether I will get an apartment in the university housing or (with much dread) have to look for an apartment in the summer. - finding out whether I will need to TA and refreshing my memory on whatever topic it is. - getting as much information as possible on all I need to know regarding the degree, what courses should I take and how do I even sign up for courses. - Making at least some initial steps towards my future research ideas. Reading material, brainstorming on questions that interest me.
  9. I have re-read the letter I got from them and it actually mentions that I will later get details on whether the stipend is a fellowship or assistantship and what will be required of me. I guess that I will get that information after accepting their offer.
  10. The funding offer I got from a university I was accepted to does not mention that I need to be a TA or RA to receive the funding as a paycheck. How should I go about becoming an RA? Do I just approach a professor in whose research I am interested and offer my services?
  11. I have made some further research on this, and unfortunately it seems that Lenovo and Dell laptops with similar spec both cost around 1000$, at least where I live.
  12. I have only seen them for 1000$ and more. victorydance - thanks, i've looked up Dell computers at your advice and they do seem to fit the same way the Yoga models do and cost less. I actually have no brand loyalty to lenovo, it was just the first example of the kind of computer I am looking forward to and the purpose of this thread was to get recommendation on similar (hopefully cheaper) stuff. So thanks.
  13. It is pricey, and that's exactly the reason why i'm asking this here... I imagined there was something similar for less money, I just brought the Yoga as an example for the kind of computer I am interested in.
  14. No gaming. Writing documents, browsing internets, streaming tv/movies and downloading torrents.
  15. I see the discussion about Surface 3 vs. iPad here, and surface does look very appealing. However, it is rather pricey. I would like to purchase a laptop to take with me to grad school, I was thinking something along the lines of Lenovo Yoga 3, which has Windows, an actual processor, but is also light, small and can function in a tablet-like mode. Does anyone have it or anything similar they recommend?
  16. I was contemplating that. I can't really explain the reasons against, maybe some naive belief that leaving the matter 'uninterrupted' will somehow yield rewarding results later
  17. Rutgers - I have not received a reply from them yet and the status of the application is - 'No Decision'. Is there anyone else who haven't received a reply from them? Or contacted them?
  18. That was, for lack of better expression - Chinese to me. However, I will take your advice if and when I need to make more posters. Currently it's just the one, and even that is not certain yet, since the abstract was not accepted (or sent!) yet. Thanks for the advice.
  19. Yeah, I don't have much experience with design related program either (unless you consider Paint ), so I think i'll stick to PowerPoint. Basically, I wasn't sure the poster abstract is the same as the regular kind, so thanks for clearing that up for me.
  20. Yeah, sorry, I did mean the abstract. What you send the organizers for them to decide whether you can present your poster. Thanks for the link. I started using PowerPoint like you mentioned, just wondering if that was the right way to do it and whether there is a better program to do this. Thanks. My questions have been answered.
  21. Hi, I have a couple of questions: 1. What should a proposal for a poster presentation contain? Does anyone have a link for an example? 2. What programs do you usually use to design the posters? Thanks in advance,
  22. I will, i'm still waiting for more answers before I start nagging with the million questions I have about the program. But once, when reading the description of the PhD program in Berkeley, it was something like that too. They describe it as getting an MA and then continuing on. Maybe that description changed.
  23. I, for example, got an email saying I was admitted to a program at an MA Level and to pass to the PhD level I need to complete the MA requirements and pass the qualifying exam. It does not say anything about re-applying. Isn't that just a different description of the regular PhD program? Or, maybe, a probation version of it?
  24. But isn't starting your PhD and officially calling it a PhD the same as starting as an MA and continuing to a PhD? Aren't both option 5 years?
  25. If anyone has any information regarding UBC, I would also love to know...
