  2. Thanks guys! All of the above seem like things I should do.
  3. Ok, what does 'applying for summer money' look like? Just approaching people? Or looking for positions advertised somewhere?
  4. I am starting a PhD program soon, and I am getting a stipend for both semesters, during which I am supposed to either TA or RA (in my case - it will be RA for the first year). But in the summers, I am supposed to somehow find something else to do (within the university, since I will be on a J1 visa) and I am not promised that such a position will be provided for me. Were you in similar situations? What do you do? Just approach researchers who might have funding for you? Look for something unrelated to your studies to do at the university for money as a temporary job?
  5. Thanks, that's a useful outline for how I will approach this - quick summary of the whole thing, a more elaborate version and answers to questions likely to appear.
  6. I will have their information, but I have a feeling that it would be better if they had mine.
  7. Another question - my poster is ready, now I need to work on my presentation of. How different should it sound/be phrased than what appears in the poster?
  8. I rewatched the entire Frasier a few months ago, still great.
  9. Cut my own hair, do my own nails, eyebrows etc. Don't eat out a lot (only if a friend wants to meet somewhere etc.) My work pays for lunches. Cook on the weekends/weeknights. Watch all my tv/movies online for free, don't own a tv, don't pay for cable Get all my music online Don't go to movies/theatre. I mainly go to cheap local concerts (approx. 3$ entrance) and I have a friend who works at the theatre, so I can sometimes go for free with her. Don't own a car, pay for a month's bus pass which costs approx. 15% of car costs. Have a magazine subscription, but I got it as a birthday gift so it's free for me. Selling a bunch of books I have read and not planning to read again, cutting low on purchasing new books. Stopped smoking My expenses are: rent, bills, food, yoga subscription (I don't feel confident enough to train on my own and lack motivation), alcohol and concerts.
  10. Swans - To be Kind Have a Nice Life - The Unnatural World Steve Gunn - Way Out Weather Author & Punisher - Drone Machines Sleaford Mods - Divide and Exit Today is The Day - Animal Mother
  11. I think the amount of TV shows I regularly watch calls for a reconsideration of my time management. But, luckily, I manage to watch most of them while at work. A few that I find especially good: Broad City, Rectify, Better Call Saul, Veep, Please Like Me.
  12. It's ok. But i'm gonna put my email address which is not university related on the handouts, so I think that should be OK.
  13. I was convinced the first time you mentioned putting the 'point' on the top left part, but couldn't imagine the way I would structure the poster exactly, examples are usually useful to get this planning process started. *staying tuned*
  14. I think that for now i'll just do the handouts, and of course include my email address in them. Since some of my information is gonna change soon. fuzzylogician - regarding the take home message you recommended on putting at the top left part, do you have an example with this practice implemented (I mean a poster somewhere online)? I was thinking of putting an introduction of some sort in that area, is that not a good idea?
  15. Just searching the internets, I stumbled upon this video on yotube it is rather funny and rather amateurishly made, in a sweet way, but the tips seem solid.
  16. Thanks! Also, the poster is based on my MA thesis, I should write the name of the university where I submitted this thesis, right? I am now going to start a PhD at a different university.
  17. I am going to present my first poster presentation at a conference (also, my first presentation of anything at a conference), it's gonna be a poster based on parts of my MA thesis. I read a bunch of stuff here in the forums and generally online, on how to prepare and what a poster should look like. Main points I got - not too much text, visual aids (graphs, charts etc.), prepare a 2-3 minute explanation about what's presented in the poster, maybe print handouts people can take with them, some design tips etc. Do you have any tips or something you didn't think of while preparing for presenting a poster and later realized? Also, what would you say (it's hard for me to imagine, since i've never printed a poster) is the minimal size of font one can use in a text box in a poster? Any feedback will be appreciated.
  18. You have class notes from some Linguistics courses here: http://ocw.mit.edu/courses/#linguistics-and-philosophy That may be of some assistance in getting a general (or more than general...) clue about at least some of the topics you'll be studying.
  19. Also going to UIUC, from overseas.
  20. Thank you. I definitely will not decide on the topic of my dissertation prior to starting a program. I currently just have several things that interest me and I will try to figure out how they can fit the program I will soon start. Since it's gonna be a new university with a different research direction than my previous university, there is also the chance I will get into something new I haven't previously thought of.
  21. I'll elaborate on my intention. I didn't mean my own projects/papers, I meant participation in someone else's research, your adviser, or a lab in the department. Though, I am not sure whether the two things (my own projects vs. someone else's) are actually separate in all cases. Say, I am going to a university where a professor has shown interest in me assisting them with their ongoing research, since my previous experience and knowledge are relevant to said research. However, their research interest is (close to but) not exactly what I would like to write my dissertation on. Am I 'stuck' only doing RA work for that professor, or is it acceptable for me to ask to participate in someone else's research (which is a bit closer to my personal interests) at the same time? I hope this is coherent....
