  1. Thank you for the answers! I decided to go with the Saskatchewan offer.
  2. Hello, First of all, I apologize for any mistakes. English is not my mother tongue. I graduated two years ago from a Canadian University, and gained some work experience in the meantime (research and paralegal). I tried applying last year to different masters in my field, but did not get accepted anywhere. I persevered, and this year I actually got accepted to every school where I applied. However, I really have no idea of which school I should attend. I also made somewhat of a stupid move: I did not wait to have all my offers in hand to accept an offer. USask offered me 48 000$ in scholarships over the course of two years for an MA in History. I never thought I would get so much funding, and I had to accept within a tight deadline, so I jumped on the occasion and accepted this amazing funding. There is a fieldwork course I could do in BC, in addition to my research, which will most likely be taking place in BC as well. However, three weeks after, I got accepted at UVic (no funding), and UBC Vancouver, with a 5000 dollars scholarship for an MA in Anthropology. Both supervisors from USask and UBC are well-known experts in my field, and offered me to work on projects that fit perfectly with my research interests. I feel extremely happy to have been accepted everywhere; yet at this point, I have no idea what to do and I feel very conflicted. I made pros and cons for both UBC and USask and both choices are equal in my mind (in terms of interest, research projects etc). I know UBC is more prestigious overall, but Vancouver is also a really expensive city to live in and coming from a poor background, I don't want to make any financially unwise decision. Should I defer my admission at UBC for one year and try to do my MA at USask in one year? I should note that I got permission from my current employer to keep working from a long distance during my studies and return to her firm once I graduate. I only have until March 10 to decide. Thank you everyone for your insight
  3. I really, really hope it is not true. I applied to a program in September with a deadline on January fifteenth. People I spoke with said it is really competitive (they only take 12-15 students a year), but I am still hoping I have a tiny chance. I also heard the opposite, that some schools send rejections first. Maybe it is just a thing for certain programs?
  4. 1. Check e-mail. 2. Check application status. 3. Refresh email. 4. Refresh application status. 5. Check the GradCafe page with admission results. 6. Panic. 7. Try breathing exercises/yoga/actually doing something productive. 8. Panic. Repeat multiple times. More seriously, I am trying to think about something else by reading, watching TV, going on walks. talking with my friends or working on projects. Good luck to you all fellow applicants
  5. Maybe an option would be to do a semester on exchange during your PhD in the states, or write part of your thesis in the States? If you are concerned about making connections in the states, you could try to take part in presentations and conferences there. And maybe you can still immigrate to the States after your PhD, for example for a post-doc.

I will be 21 when I start my program
  7. Thank you! What I would love to do in terms of research would be to look at how pipelines impact Indigenous communities (on a cultural, social level), and what are the Indigenous reactions and alternatives in terms of protection of the environment and economic development in British Columbia. What about you?
  8. Not Canadian here, but applying to graduate schools in Canada after doing my undergrad at UOttawa. I applied to UVic, UBC Okanagan, UNBC and UOttawa in Indigenous Governance/Indigenous Studies/First Nations Studies/Anthropology.
  9. Sorry! I didn't mean to worry you. It might just be because I applied on September first. They probably just review applications by order of arrival. I checked the admissions page of UVic for my program, it says they will make admissions decisions on the last week of February, so maybe the History department will make decisions around the same time
  10. In my case it started with forwarded for review, and then forwarded to the department. Thank you for the link Kleio! According to my supervisor at the research center I work for, several canadian universities are late this year because of the budget cuts, so it would be normal if we haven't received any answer so far.
  11. Congratulations on being almost accepted at Guelph Kleio! Best of luck to you I have another question for you guys . My file has been accepted by the office of the director of graduate studies in one school, and my application now says my file was forwarded to the department. Does that mean I have good chances of getting in, or would it just mean I passed the minimum requirements but it does not necessarily mean I am in quite yet? I think I might start over thinking everything.
  12. Thank you all for the answers! Henry: I considered applying at Trent for a while too, but the tuition indeed seems to be very expensive there for international students. I might apply there for my PhD one day if I become permanent resident though. How did you like Trent University? Do you have any tips on how to patiently wait for answers from schools?
  13. "Oh you are applying to Indigenous Studies? That's... nice. And er, what can you do with it after?" "Can you get a job with your degree?" "What if you don't find a job with it?" "Is your degree recognized?" "You will get in somewhere!" or "You will be accepted everywhere, there is no need to worry" "Research? But... what can you research?" And the worst (coming from a dentist from my home country. not completely related to grad school in particular): "OH so you're studying in Canada??? Is it true they have lots of beavers and lumberjacks? And... Indians?" Before proceeding to spending the entire session listing all the stereotypes about Canada while I was hopelessly lying unable to speak while he was checking my teeth.
  14. I hope I get to see it one day Congratulations for your admission at UBC! Do you know if UBC Vancouver and Okanagan start giving admissions offers at the same time? I haven`t heard anything yet so I am a bit nervous... Not sure if good sign or bad sign.
  15. I did my undergrad at OttawaU (Aboriginal Studies and Canadian Studies). How is Kelowna by the way? I haven`t been to British Columbia yet, so I am not sure which city would be best to live in between Prince Georges, Victoria or Kelowna.
  16. Nice to meet you! I had not met anyone yet who applied to similar degrees so it`s great. I applied to UVic (it is my first choice), UBC Okanagan and the University of Northern British Columbia. I can`t wait to hear from the schools. I think you passed the admission deadline for UVic, but I think they also accept late applications sometimes. Where did you do your undergrad?
  17. So far I have been applying to three universities in Canada for the fall term 2015, and am anxiously waiting for an answer. Has anyone else applied to similar programs (aboriginal studies, first nation studies, ...)? Have you heard from any of the schools yet?
