This makes me cry a little bit inside

Hey, Just to let you guys know, I got into Pitt with a fellowship, but I have another offer I'm really considering, so mine might open up, but I don't know what I'm doing and won't for like two weeks. But it is really good to know that the people at Pitt (who have been incredibly nice by the way) worked hard to secure the funds, makes it even harder to make a decision.

I haven't gotten anything, which doesn't bode well, but my probable advisor there seems to think that the lack of funding is really only a first year thing, and really only a first semester, first year thing at that, although that could have been just for her advisees.

This is seriously what I used to do professionally (and encapsulates a good deal of my historical research), so I the guy to talk/type to. I'm just going to go off of region and a average price of under 15 a bottle. France: Alsace or white Rhones. Alsatian wines will be sweeter and more floral while those from the Rhone will be dryer. Italy: Soave or Falanghina Spain: Any white is good, but particularly those from Rueda. United States: New York and Washington Reislings, Non-Chardonnays from California, like Viogeniers. South Africa: I have to give love to Chenin Blancs from Mulderbush. Argentina: Torrentes is a great varietal that goes underappriciated and is really exciting, especially with the occisional banana and rose aromas. Desert wines: A great option is a muscat from northern Italy, which is often under 15 dollars US, but sometimes more (I recently got a bottle for $18 here in New York).

I have to admit, I learned winemaking in Spain (also where I learned Spanish), so I have to pimp all those lovely Spanish wines

Haha, If I was there, I think the ability to construct cogent sentence structures would be lost to me by now
  7. I'm coming out of a small, but good LAC. That same pressure is everywhere. In my cohort of history majors, three of us, including myself, are looking for history PhD's and the posturing is immense.

In another life I was a winemaker/ sommelier, and if either one of you were here (or I was there) right now, the mocking would be really severe . Like, those poor grapes get abused and thrown around like sacks of onions. Try some rose cava from Spain, a lot more love goes in that bottle for basically the same price.

I don't have any info (but I do have an application in at Georgetown and its the last school I'm waiting on), but it is possible no one who uses this site was accepted and everyone on here who did apply there wasn't accepted. However, this isn't probable, so yeah, it seems weird. Like you, I'm hoping it was just someone being dismissive, but thanks for the information.
  10. I know that, its why I can't really make a decision until I visit all three next week, but the woman thinks outside of rational appraisals. Believe me, if I didn't think any were not absolutely first-rate, I would at least be a step closer to making a decision.
  11. Oh this is so familiar. My mother refuses to believe that Wisconsin,Virginia, and Pitt (the schools I am deliberating between right now) are not only perfectly good schools, but excellent programs. I'm just getting recriminations because Princeton and (I'm assuming) Harvard turned me down.
  12. I'm all for that. Interestingly, I'm doing capitalism and American culture (centered around the major depressions/ stock market crashes between say 1872 and the 1930s- feelings of anti-banking, things like that), so you're more or less my doppelganger to a certain extent. I have to say that I'm from the Northeast and everyone around me would much prefer if I stayed in the east, as oppossed to the other school I'm vacillating on, Wisconsin. I really like my advisor at UVA too, especially after we have had some very constructive conversations. I've already found everyone at UVA very friendly and easy to communicate with, so they haven't had to do much to win me over.
  13. I sure hope so, right now, the only thing has kept me from signing on to UVA is the funding question
  14. Odd, I didn't get anything, hope this isn't a bad sign. Are you guys Americanists?
  15. I second this, we live about two hours north of New York (although in NY, not CT, but the distance between where we are to the city and between New Haven and the city is negligible) and my girlfriend commutes to NYU for a one year masters at Steinhart and work while I finish up undergrad. The commuting gets to her, but if you keep a good home situation and realize that your significant other will be in a bad mood every day but the weekend, its not too bad, especially when you know its temporary.

I'm in upstate New York all of four hours from Boston and I haven't heard a peep since I submitted to BC. Maybe they are doing it by rounds or something?

I haven't heard a peep, but I should very, very soon. Who else is going to recruitment weekend?
  18. I think I can chime in here to help you. Although I am in the middle of my application cycle, I work in a off-field of economic history, as I mostly study cultural and social movements emanating out of stock market crashes and other economic events, and particularly in the US and Britain (I know, its very timely!). Because of this, I billed myself as an Americanist, but essentially I can see myself going in a real transnational direction. I'm currently admitted at three programs, Wisconsin, UVA, and Pittsburgh, and I'm waiting for a few more, particularly Michigan, Harvard, and WashU. I can say that this is an amazing time time to be interested in these kinds of topics, not only because global economic history has been left slightly neglected by historians, such that much of the work has been done by economists and laywers. It also means that there is alot of work to be done here. On your list, I can recommend, based on my personal ongoing admissions epic, that BC, Vandy, Pitt, and Rochester (full disclosure- I applied to Vandy BU, and BC as well) are good options for you. GW not so much, although perhaps you have a better idea of someone than I did. Given that so few people state they work with these things, but many are beginning to because of current events, you are going to have to do some digging around. I really suggest emailing any person you think would be a potential match for you and outline your interests and see if they think you could that work there. The answers might suprise you, as many of the people who I found to be good matches would not have initially seemed so. For me, it brought the list of schools I could have applied to from about 20 to a nice 11, with a mix of ivies and top publics as well as a few other schools which I dropped here. feel free to PM me if you have any quesitons, since we are playing in the same field.

I really curious now. I was told my multiple people, including a POI that first years have trouble getting full funding, especially first semester, but everyone gets something. I've even have had my professors here (two of whom are somewhat familiar with UVA) that Virginia is good about funding, especially compared with Wisconsin my other admit (and alot of other people's on here)

    History 2010

Hey, What gives you this idea? I'm under the impression that UVA is good (but not great) with funding?

    History 2010

I couldn't agree more. I happen to be fortunate enough to be able to afford to pay for the whole experience if I went unfunded, but I realize the danger of that. Not only do you lose on valuable teaching experience you also make it so you are never really integrated into the department and seen as something of an outsider. Plus, remember that a year of tuition is only slightly less than what one would make as a junior professor. Only go a year unfunded if you know that you are in the best possible place for you and they visibly went to all possible means to get you funding from the university coffers.
  22. There should be a link on the bottom of the application page to see your decision. I also just got an email (sent at 3:55 Am, but I don't get up THAT early) to check my application page to see a decision.

    History 2010

Hey, I'm one of them. 19th and 20th century American cultural, economic, and political, with a dash of transnational. It was on site without any prior warning, so if anyone is curious, check your application (although I am sure you already have checked something like a million times)
  24. I happen to be a college debater and I was curious if any other debaters (CEDA or LD) are lurking around here. Its odd because both my partner and myself are applying to do history PhD's and I can't think of anyone else that I know who is both a debater and potential future historian.

Thanks for that information, that actually makes me feel alot better as I've been fairly nervous about Michigan. I knew that they were about a week away and its nice to be able to place a potential date.
